What happened to the old forums?

The server crash that you are no doubt aware of by now was a worst case scenario. A massive hard drive failure, a critical troubleshooting misstep, and a discovery of a failed backup mechanism.... all rolled into one. Needless to say, it has been a tough few weeks at the CPG offices.

We're finally getting back to normal, and our new systems are safer, more secure, more reliable, and faster. While our CPG main data was recovered easily, it was the forums and the old blogging system that were hit the hardest.

Unfortunately, after investing in several methods to recover the forum data, we are extremely upset to report that the data is irrecoverable. The backup process in place for both blogs and forums failed and the data we could recover was corrupt, so there's nothing more we can do.

Within the darkness, however, there shines a light. A major headache with the forums, blogs, and main site is that they were separate platforms with separate logins and separate data. This tragedy has allowed us to begin researching alternative solutions which allow for full integration of the CPG login with the forums and the blogging.... and we've found a new software for forums which we really like so far. You're staring at it right now!

So we encourage you to please help us rebuild what was once a bustling forum community. Post your questions, comments, and concerns. Share your latest finds and your comic convention triumphs. Discuss your favorite hobby. Discuss our favorite hobby.

Welcome to the new forums. We hope you enjoy them.

Yes. When logged in, click "My Comic Collection" and on that page you'll see a list of your publishers. Click the download link next to the publisher to download all of your collection within that publisher.

We do not have a full collection download yet, so you would need to do this for each publisher.

Are story synopses being entered?

I have entered the story synopsis on several issues, several weeks ago, but they are still "pending approval." I'm reluctant to spend a lot of time adding more, if my efforts are for naught.

Also, I sent an e-mail reporting a problem, where I entered the synopsis for 3 stories for an issue (Action 254), but the page shows 1 story listed 3 times. I have not heard back on this problem, nor seen it corrected.

Tedski

Hi Tedski! They are still in our system but the server outage got us a bit behind on getting those approved. Now that the forums are back, we can refocus on the approval system so please stay tuned.

Wow, forum reboot! Glad to see the forum back. Anyway, I recently made a nice purchase of Excalibur issue 1 - 50 (paid about $26.00 with shipping). Loving it so far! I think that Excalibur is one of those overlooked series' that was/is actually a great series well worth the reading. Personally, I think Disney/Marvel could easily do an Excalibur movie. There are already two
X-Men characters, Nightcrawler and Shadowcat, which would help the X-Fans relate. And come on, I mean, if they can make an Ant-Man movie, then certainly Excalibur would be worth it.
Alrighty then, let's get to posting and make this forum active again!

Welcome back! We'll start advertising the forums next week after we work out a couple more kinks, so I expect a lot of new members to start wandering by soon wink

Centerfold detached -- how high can it grade?

The subject says it ... how high can a book grade with a detached centerfold (PRESENT, but detached)? Any thoughts?

It's really hard to say without knowing the condition of the rest of the book. I mean, even if the rest of the book was an immaculate 10.0, I'd think a centerfold detachment would definitely be a decent ding.

But of course, at the end of the day, it all comes down to the potential buyer.

"Event" books

I think it'll be interesting to see how the universe reboots ultimately affect the perceived value of these old events. If the Universe reboots and they recycle a lot of these, I can see the importance of them being somewhat diminished. But if the events never repeat themselves, they could be looked at as lost classics of a foregone timeline.

This guide is pretty good at giving you rough ideas of grades.

You can get away with a little bit of wear and still get a 9+, just so long as you don't have several little things adding up. Even a cover bend/crease can still get a 9 so long as the interior is pristine.

Unfortunately, that's not available at this time. It's a very tricky problem but we do have a plan that we hope to try out this year.

The old forums were a bit quirky. Always having to choose subject line characters carefully so as not to confuse the software, and searching the forums for a specific thread was an exercise in futility at times. As a result a lot of topics would be doubled up in two or three threads with different names but the discussions would run practically parallel. I love our comic community, but it was a bit of a turn off to try and find a discussion that you participated in but you couldn't remember what it was called. Still, I'm looking forward to being a part of these new boards as they grow.

yeah, that software was...... lacking.

This new software is a little more raw, but we have all the guts and know how they operate, so we can improve it over the time. We didn't even know where to start in the tangled mess that was the last forum code smile

Where do you see the discrepancy? Looks like our pricing is listed within a few dollars of the highest auctions, and there's even a lot where you can get the first 5 in a series for just $20 in decent condition.

Keep in mind eBay auctions are highly variable and subject to market timing. You could get a steal of a deal if the auction ends when most sellers aren't active, but you could get raked over the coals if someone targeting the book happens to lock in on your auction.

Hey Goonie,

We definitely got behind with the server crash and the holidays, but we're back at it and working on clearing out the queue over the next couple weeks.

A bit problem we had is that the server wipe got rid of all the covers people submitted to us, so we have to re-find them. It's a grind, to say the least upset

That cover tear on the #2 is brutal, but the #1 isn't too shabby. Probably not worth slabbing, but would make a great reader copy for fans.

You should have received an email when it was added, or a rejection note if we had the issues already. Send me an email to shawn@comicspriceguide.com with the issues you submitted and I'll look into it.
