I think I'd love to have just about any of those issues in my collection. Particularly that Avengers #1 to round out my collection.

I'm so glad the forums are back. I always enjoyed seeing everyone's collections and showing off some of my finds. But since the site went down, I've kind of gone a bit nuts in terms of buying. I've been buying a bunch of collections lately. Taking what I want, selling my duplicates and just generally enjoying the thrill of the hunt. I actually spent $1900 on a collection recently, loaded with Avengers and Uncanny X-Men that I needed. But I think I'm getting ahead of myself.

For those that don't remember or just never saw, my name is Doug, I'm 32 and live in Vancouver, Canada. I started collecting in about 1991 with the Ninja Turtles, then moved on to Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers (one of my long time favourites), and some nice Sci-Fi titles like Killraven. I have a pretty eclectic collection thanks to going to my local store pretty much every week for over a decade. I only recently got back into collecting, and over the summer, I discovered the value that comes from buying collections. As a result, my collection has almost doubled in size this year and I've gotten some pretty odd stuff. It helps that I've gotten my girlfriend into collecting, too.

Right now, I have almost 11,000 comics in my collection, some 3000 of which came since the site went down. I've beefed up my runs of Avengers, Batman, Uncanny X-Men and even have an almost complete collection of New Teen Titans now.Seriously, I'm only missing one issue of the first series and not an expensive one. It's actually to the point that I had so much stuff to show off from recent acquisitions, that it would have almost have been easier to start my thread over. At this point, I'm going to need to get the new stuff in new bags and boards so it can get properly sorted into my collection, so getting some more scans together would be pretty easy.

But until that happens, here are some of the things I already have scanned:

This was a gift. It's not in great condition, but still... I thin I have it graded at 3.5, but it might grade a bit higher.

This was a collection purchase where I actually felt like I ripped the guy off. I bought a long box with a bunch of Daredevil in it along with a box of random stuff. Total cost was $55. But the box had a virtually complete run from Daredevil #168-#330. I have this one in about 9.0.

This was part of my brother's collection. Not sure where he got it, really.

I bought this off eBay, years ago. Paid $26 according to my database.

And let's close with some Batman...

That cost me cover price.

More will be coming soon. Like... when I get a handle on my collection again. I've started selling my duplicates at conventions, which frees up a little space.

Sounds like up north there are still good stuff to be had. Here in Texas things are drying up or getting crazy expensive.

It has to do with the housing market. Because people are moving around a lot, or downsizing to smaller places to save money (or make money), the comic book collection that's been sitting for a while is usually expendable. And lots of people just want their old collection to go to a good home, so they sell it cheap to a fellow collector. That's how I get a bunch of collections, by being a collector who will properly care for the comics that they used to treasure. If they have something old and valuable, they usually know it, but I still managed to get the first Apocalypse for 87 cents buy buying in bulk. Pretty good condition, too.

I'm glad you got into it, too. Now, when I find some interesting issues that I think you might like, I can just slip them in your box. There are some good things that I've put in there. You'll enjoy them.

Autographs/Signatures on Comics!

I've found myself deep in this conundrum lately, too. One collection I bought had a ton of signed books. All raw, and a few I'm not even sure who the signature is. I've figured out most of them, like the entire "Crisis on Infinite Earths" series signed by Marv Wolfman, some Spider-Man by Frank Cho, Uncanny X-Men by Marc Silvestri, that sort of thing. I honestly have no clue what to do with these. I don't see the need to have multiple copies of the same book, but most of these would just go right in my dollar bin at the con table. Seems kind of a waste to me. I have a few comics that I got signed personally, and those have some meaning, but when it's someone else getting the book signed, I honestly have no idea what to do about it. If it's in better condition or even the same condition, I keep the signed copy, but what about the 7.0 Crisis that's signed when I have it at 9.2? If anyone has any advice, I'd welcome it.

I have a #134 for sale, shoot me a message if interested.

Moon Knight #1 (80's) seems be have increased recently. NM copies were going for around $10 and are now up to $20.

I have seen increases of MOON KNIGHT for sure and #1 has long been in the $1 for what seems like forever. I am at a loss on the increase however, since I have heard nothing significant with the character as a whole. He can't seem to hold a series and is a character that seems to be in search of an identity. His appearances in MARVEL SPOTLIGHT also seem on the rise. I also know he had a solo run in the Marvel magazine sized MARVEL PREVIEW. I, for one, think his first appearance is WAY overpriced BUT people seem to be paying it. Even low grade copies are going for crazy money.

I just bought a collection with a nice run of Moon Knight in it (including the #1 issue you are talking about). I mentioned it down at my LCS and they told me to hold onto it since there is a rumour that Moon Knight will be appearing in one of the Netflix series. That alone would be enough to take them out of the dollar bins for a bunch of speculators. Heck, didn't Runaways #1 go up in value some 2000% or something because they announced that they were looking for actors for a possible movie?

Dark Horse Comics...Star Wars series

Umm... I'm going to have to go ahead and ask someone to cite this source. The whole "what is and isn't canon" thing has been going on for years. When Lucas owned it, Soulcaliber IV was canon because they had to feature the Star Wars logo to use Yoda. Anything that featured the Star Wars logo was canon as a way to get fans to read the books and then the comics. Now, only the movies are canon, which makes the screenwriters' jobs way easier. Unless that changed again. I have about a one year hole in my pop culture knowledge.

But I did a quick search and didn't find any source corroborating that Disney wants to destroy the Dark Horse comics. It in no way benefits Disney. Really, it doesn't benefit anyone. They aren't canon. The movies might contradict them (no spoilers, but basically every Star Wars book I read were undone by Force Awakens), but the stories still exist. Anyway, I'll admit I'm wrong if there's a reputable source on this, but to me, it just doesn't make sense.

So, just before the forums went down, I implored Canadians to vote and also hinted that I had set a new record for the most money I had ever paid for a comic. It's one of the comics that I had scanned before it became apparent that the forums were going to be gone for a while. Anyway, here it is:

I've been finding a lot of Dick Dillin comics in my recent collection buys, and have started to really appreciate how dynamic his style is. I have a few of his Hawkman comics, but I've also been slowly cobbling together a nice run of his Justice League. I actually bought this at a garage sale. The guy had a bunch of comics that he had framed, this was one of them. Anyway, I bought this and a few others for about $85, so when all is said and done, I paid $61 for this comic (yes, that is a record for me. I don't often pay a lot for the comics I buy). A bit more than it's worth, but I'm ok with that. I didn't massively over pay, and it's the first Red Tornado (well, Silver Age, anyway) and the start of the 120 issue or so run that Dillin had on JLA. And given how often I get stuff well below guide (you better believe that I'll be scanning in the Sandman #1 that I got for 54 cents), I'm fine overpaying a bit for something I want from time to time.

Besides, that one only ran me 38 cents. I just had to buy a full long box for $100 to get it

I'll post more as I find them and scan them, though my LCS might take a bit to get me the number of bags and boards I need so that I can get everything sorted.

If you have photobucket or a similar online photo sharing site, upload your image there.
Then click on the image button (dead centre of the toolbar at the top of the reply box) and a new window will come up.
Put the image url (no additional code) in the window and hit "ok."
That's all you need to do. The old way of doing photos doesn't seem to work anymore.

So, around Christmas, I bought a collection off of eBay. I haven't been really disappointed with the eBay stuff, I just keep thinking that I can get better deals by buying local. Anyway, I paid just under $400 Canadian, including shipping for this. I just got it, so I don't exactly know if there's some hidden gem that I don't know about yet, but here are some highlights:

Yeah, I didn't even take them out of the bags yet. Not in great condition, but then, most of these issues are not in high grade. Not a huge issue for me. I got a little closer to a full run of Amazing Adventures. It started as me wanting a full run of Killraven, but it's quickly expanded once I discovered that there are some great stories and art in the earlier issues. Like the Inhumans and Black Widow double feature. Speaking of....

I got a few Amazing Spider-Man issues that I didn't have for the run I'm building. This is by far the best of the bunch. I even got a few Spectacular Spider-Man issues that I am missing.

All the Avengers in the collection? I have them all. On the plus side, I might be able to upgrade the condition of an issue or two.

I think this is a multi-poster...

So... people like Batman? Well, so do I. And there were a bunch in the collection Like this:

Clearly a reader copy. But Even the more modern ones in the collection are mostly ones I don't have.

There were actually a number of Brave and the Bold in there. I have a slightly cooler one to show off in the recent pick ups, but that will happen once I get it in the new bag and board. #85...

It's a good collection for Batman....

Also the Flash.... lot of the Flash in there....

Let's do one more post for the stuff I have scanned so far....

So, the big difficulty of buying a collection like this is trying to figure out what I paid for everything. I could always just say "I paid $6 for each issue," but that doesn't really seem right. Especially when that means that I'll be putting a few duplicates that I bought for $6 into my dollar bin at the con. Issues like Defenders #129... yeah.... So, what I have to do next is get everything graded (because there's no way that I'm getting a 10 cent Lois Lane for $6 in 9.4), figure out the total graded value of everything that I bought, divide the total price paid (including shipping) by that figure and start applying that percentage to every issue. It's a lot of work, but the figures must be accurate! Only time I don't bother is when I get things for under a buck an issue. Then, it really doesn't matter. Anyway, back to what was in there:

I have a pretty good collection of Daredevil now, and this collection just helped shore that up. Even got a reader copy of #10. It's pretty rough, though. Like, someone tried to trace Daredevil since there are all these weird impressions all over the outline of Daredevil. Moving on....

There are about half a dozen JLA issues in there. A bunch of which will help me with the Dick Dillin run. This one? Not so much, but it's cool, at least.

So, these were the reason that I bought the collection. A bunch of X-Men that I didn't have. Sadly, both have serious flaws that I either didn't see or were well hidden in the photos. I've been pretty good at spotting the "too good to be true" flaws that eBayers try to hide, but with this, if nothing else, it was a large set that I was buying.

Just kind of cool. Getting so many Teen Titans stuff lately. And so many duplicates. Not of this one, though.

That's all for now. As I go through the issues, I'll probably post one or two more if they end up being cool.

I saw a copy of that Supernatural Thrillers #1 at a con a few months back from a great seller. Ended up buying some of the Sterenko X-Men instead. I keep wondering if I should have tried to cut a better deal and add one more comic to the bundle. Didn't realize that it was a hard issue to find. You have a whole whack of cool issues there, Gil.

Yeah, the rip on #2 is bad, I have had this issue for a long time, and believe me, it has taken ALOT of restraint for me to not try to tape, or glue the rip...

But since both of these fall between the proverbial cracks as far as conventional grading goes, based on the information provided would anyone please care to venture a guess as to where these might be graded?

I just realized this morning that some of my other comics (were they in high grade) have some serious value to them, so I really need to get on to grading my collection.

I also have Incredible Hulk #180 that has a very 'bleached' front cover - again, I haven't a clue how to grade this...
edited by soundjunky on 1/13/2016

Well, assuming there isn't some sort of flaw on the inside like a missing page or a coupon that was cut out, I'd have #1 at VG or so (3.5 or 4.0) because of the creasing on the corner and spine.

As for #2.... A rip of that size would usually have it at Good at best. 2.0, 1.8... that sort of thing.

As mentioned, they are good reader copies or run fillers.

If you want to get a good idea of grading, there are tutorials on YouTube, but I find that this is a handy tool:
http://www.e-bigs.net/freetool.php
You just enter the flaws and it will give you a grade. Might not be the most accurate, but it will be close. I occasionally have to disagree with the rating, but it's usually changing a 3.0 to a 2.0, sort of thing.

So, I finally got a hold of the bags and boards I needed (well, a portion of, anyway...). That means I'm currently going through the more recent pick ups and getting them sorted into the new collection. I keep new pick ups separate until after they have new bags and boards. I'm weird that way, I guess. Anyway, I've already shown off a bunch of the ones I got, so check them out in the posts I put up last year for... oh yeah...

I collected every Superman title there was for a few years there. I can't claim that all of them were good, but there were classic stories like this one. Bought it new, so I paid cover price. Well, a bit less, since it was $5 after the store discount was factored in. I've been getting a few decent Silver and Bronze Age Action Comics in the recent collection buys, but let's face it, those are often more notable for the ridiculous covers.

This one's a bit worse for wear, but I keep finding Adventure Comics in my bulk buys. And when you are getting stuff like this for $0.86, you can't really complain.

I recall saying that I bought a collection for $1900. If not, I bought a collection for $1900. This was in the box of "stuff I'll throw in just to get rid of." The guy was all about Marvel (seriously, he collected a bunch of Marvel titles starting at the end of 1978 or so, ending in about 1984. Good stuff, too. X-Men, Daredevil, Iron Man, ROM... I'll be showing a bunch of those off when I get to them). After all was said and done and I had everything cataloged, I had paid about 45 cents on the dollar for everything. This issue was about $16.

So, before I bought that $1900 collection, I realized I needed to start getting serious about selling my duplicates. And if I was going to pay 45% of their graded value, I couldn't just bring them down to my LCS. As such, I started getting a table at the local cons. Which is a tad awkward since the dealer who runs the major local con was supposed to have the ability to price match on that collection. He didn't get it. Anyway, that dealer ended up buying some of my duplicates (a bunch of which were in the aforementioned collection) and gave me a nice deal on the whole set of Batman Year One original issues. All four for $40 in 9.2-9.6.

And from recent bulk buys I've been cobbling together a pretty solid collection of post-Crisis Batman. I've had a pretty solid collection for a while, but now the #400-500 range is almost complete. There's a guy I've bought a few bulk boxes off. He does bulk buys, too, but he'll do it to get a few issues and then sell the rest. The whole death of Jason Todd story (along with some other good Batman issues) were in the collection. The collection that I got for $0.36 an issue. Not too bad.

Anyway, at this point, I'm starting with my boxes of DC. I'm part way through Batman. I'll be showing off the best finds as I go. There are some good ones.

Hey I remember that Adventures Comics #364 from the old forum. It features the most fearsome beast in all comicdom...A cat with super powers. Even Darkseid would think twice before going their Angry Mob

I know, right? Given the number of cat scratches I get on an everyday basis just because they can, a super powered cat would be something to be feared.

I only finished the run because I'm not quite as fussy on grade as yourself. Still tried to go for solid copies though, otherwise there wouldn't have been as much fun or challenge trying to get the run together. You have a lot of really nice books in your collection that I would love to have.

I'm with you on the grading issue. I'm not fussy about the grades on most of my books so long as I can read them with out fearing that they will fall apart in my hand. A complete run is still a complete run, after all. And you have a nice run. You can always upgrade later if you feel the need.
