Mylar Bags

Right so, I've on and off casually collected comics for a number of years, but have seriously gotten into collecting this year and have accumulated quite a collection, mostly Golden and Silver Age. I got mylar bags for my comics as I want to protect them from ageing and store them well, my golden ages are in regular poly bags as I like to keep those in toploaders, and to begin with i didn't anticipate on getting very many raw golden ages at all, but later on I received some silver books in what i assume must be golden age size mylars which don't fit in toploaders, so I have just left my golden ages in poly bags (eventually i want to get these graded, but I live in the UK so it's even more hassle than it would be in America). The next size up in toploaders would be magazine size, which i got a few from a seller that delivered their comics in them, and they don't fit in my storage box so they're out of the question.
Now here's the main area of bother, my silver age and few bronze ages I have, I bought silver age size mylars, and also some mylite2 standard size, which are exactly the same as the other silver age mylars i got, but I've since heard that most collectors like to keep their comics in larger bag sizes, such as mylite's golden/silver or just golden age bags in general. I've already got around 100 or so books in mylar, so it would be fairly bothersome to replace all the bags and boards, my main question is does keeping silver age books in standard size/silver age size mylar bags, which can be minorly tight but fit in fine, damage books, or is it more just some collectors personal preference to give books a little more breathing room?
Thanks in advance for your response
It all depends on the "fit" of the comic in the bag. I have stored modern comics in Poly-bags and over time - they contracted and damaged the comics. This is one reason to put a comic in a slightly larger bag. This should not be a problem with Mylar bags.
Some Bronze/Silver/Golden Age comics are Giant Size or Annuals that are thicker than the regular comic. Many Golden Age comics are 52 to 64 pages. Mylar comic bags come in only one thickness! So the solution - if the fit is tight - is to go a wider bag. Really this is just a judgement call as to what you think will work and not damage the comic.
Just my opinion

Hi there folks, I have a rather large collection I am looking to sell. Would like to sell all at once, maybe in an auction. A few thousand issues. Are these Golden Age Comics worth restoring?

Hi guys, I have some extremely low grade golden age comics and I'm wondering whether they're worth paying out to restore or whether the cost of doing so would outweigh the value of it completed. I only took an image each of these as they're very fiddly to get in and out of bags due to there being so many tears that if i'm not careful i could end up doing a lot more damage to them. Because a lot of the pages are scuffed and out of place I have left them on poly bags as opposed to trying to squeeze them into golden age comic bags as again, I did not want to damage them, but I put some golden age backing boards in the bag to try and steady them a bit. Superman #47
 Batman #44

Sadly it's the Batman that's in quite worse condition which is a shame as it's a particularly nice and desirable cover. I've not braved looking through the entire inside to check its completeness but I'm guessing nonetheless these are both 0.5's overall, I did brave checking the pages briefly though and again it's the Batman that's in considerably worse condition, the Superman surprised me with better pages than i was expecting but the Batman has dark stains over some parts of pages, maybe fungus or staple rust. There's also tape on the sides, I think the backs are pretty torn up as well. I can take these out the bags and give more thorough photos if you like but if it's a forgone conclusion just looking at these pictures I'd sooner not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, whether it would be worthwhile getting these restored or if not whether there's any special slips etc I should put these in to help preserve them better. Thanks in advance!
You just have to contact a restoration house, estimate resorted grade, and do the math.
It is an emotional issues - but the math is just not that difficult.
As the restoration folks what they believe it could be restored to. (As more than one). |

We set prices based on the market. Overstreet is outdated by the time it's published so we certainly don't use that! The market changes quickly based on speculation. This is definitely the way the market operates now.
The offer page encourages the true value of a book, which is what we like to see. I've seen you get some great deals here on the site, don't let one or two that got away get you down. Ron
I get it but books that are $3 are now $40-50 on E-Bay? Nothing jumps that fast....
I agree with admin post - comics do jump quickly based on movie announcements or some other event.
On Monday Sep 30 Spider-Girl #59 was a $3 comics. Tuesday I sold on CPG for $7 - and this was a good sales price on eBay on Monday. Sep 30th. On Wednesday this comic was $49. REASON - Benjy Parker was joining the Spider-Verse.
Welcome to the crazy! Enjoy!

Yes - suggest you check the publication year. DC has been doing collectors no favors with continued renumbering of annuals. They do it in other titles too - makes for massive confusion. edited by kds_comics on 10/9/2019 |

I'm going to guess it's this one? https://comicspriceguide.com/titles/sabrina-the-teen-age-witch/1/postcr if not, just search for Sabrina and you'll get more of the series that have been done than if you use Teenage Witch. And hello CPG admins, this issue and most others have it spelled 'Teenage', but CPG has it with the hyphen. Only one I see with the actual hyphened title on the cover is the 1971 series. Perhaps they should all be cross-indexed both ways so they all come up on 1 search?
Link above is a one shot. Bronze Age is this one:

The TV tie in series is this one

Try searching just "Sabrina" - you will get better results.

I think this is the request brought up a few times in the forum to download collection (or by box) in a spreadsheet format.
By Publisher is nice, but requires a lot of manipulation to get in the same data list as the Boxes are (or ones for complement collection.)
The complete collection is much mire handy for insurance inventory list or just to find everything alphabetically.
Is this what was asked? |

Trimmed Comics - I Got Stuck - How Do I Grade ???

I recently got some trimmed comics in a collection I purchased. Not obvious until you look closely. I see elsewhere on the web where --- if otherwise in top condition, a trimmed comic can get a grade of 7.5 https://forum.cbcscomics.com/topic/1044/i-finally-got-burnt---asm-17-trimrestore/ Other places I see 4.5 to 5.5 range. https://www.comicpriceguide.co.uk/features.php?id=14 Does anyone have a guide/tips/tricks as to how to grade? Amateur trim of about 1/16 of an inch one or two edges - hard to see unless you compare to a good copy. I do NOT need... How did I not see it, blah. blah, blah. ??? As a reminder - comics from the 1960s and 70s occasionally had printing offsets that are not trims or defects - just that the graphics are not center n the paper - this does not necessarily indicate a trim. At this point - it is what it is. Thanks KDS Comncs edited by kds_comics on 1/10/2020 edited by kds_comics on 1/10/2020 |

I imagine that nobody cares if Fantastic Four #307 is trimmed. It's the expensive key books that we're talking about here. Honestly take all the time you need to examine the book. I'm probably not even going to care about a Spawn #1, but you can be damn sure I'm going over Hulk #181 with a fine tooth comb. But then there are some books that get to the point that they're so valuable it doesn't matter, like Action Comics #1. Oh you trimmed it and it's a 2.0 now? I'll take my tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars and be happy.
I do not care to list specific comics - but they are Silver/Bronze age comics with and untrimmed value of $30 to $80 each.Enough of a value to 1) cheat someone by selling as untrimmed and 2) value correctly as trimmed for resale. Thanks. If this was FF#307 or common modern comics I would not have bothered to post. And no one would have bothered to trim. LET"S THINK THIS THROUGH PEOPLE!!!! Thanks. |

Hey. I agree with drewzer15 and I add that as soon as you get your 'Silver's and/or 'Golden's-Match them with others that you have to compare what you have as 'Trimmed or No'. This is a quick way of figuring some things out when you get books. Carry an inexpensive Gold or Silver book with you, if need be before you buy. I hope this may help you.
There were advertised as correct - not trimmed - so as you say - not immediately obvious if you are assuming they are good. Plus Marvel comics at that time often had covers that were off-center in late 1960s into 1970s - this make it even harder to spot. Had to compare to correct online cover scan, then measure against known good comic (or a tape measure) to check. |

I need your advice old timers....I'm a bronze age collector and have now much limited space...so I have built up a shelf of cinder blocks and boards to host my comic boxes....my worry is that the heater vent in my room blows on some of the lower boxes so i'm worried that will degrade my comics even though they are boxed, boarded and bagged....I feel and know i'm doing the wrong thing but ran out of space....any advice for the hoarder comic collector who still can manage? Also, anyone know about comic book insurance? I have no clue...please help on the full Monte or in part...will double check all feedback but thanks!
Changing boards out in the comic bags will help. Desiccant is a cheap solution - this will help some too.
Put plenty of desiccant in the sides of the boxes (between the comics and the box) and replace very often (or as needed) absorbs that pesky humidity.
Put lower value books closer to the vent - I realize you have have to re-box, get books out of order - but if you label your boxes and use the CPG box function - this will keep straight what is where.
Not a cure all but a few suggestions.

Good Evening All, (new member and first post) What is better for price appreciation when buying an already graded/slabbed comic: 1 - Lower grade BUT white pages (IE: 5.0 whitepages) 2 - Higher grade off-white/cream pages (IE: 8.0 off-white/cream pages) I'm thinking white pages are more important but... since its pertaining to ONLY graded copies and the cover is only seen and hence more like a piece of art, a higher grade would be better for price appreciation in the future. No time line for value to go up (maybe like 20-30 years from now, this is just for me to pass down) For more details, i'm looking at getting some silver and bronze age comics (first appearances and #1 issues). Obviously higher grade and white pages is the grail Thanks All and look forward to your answers
Grading comics is a "look at the whole thing" thing - you need to look at all factors as a whole. The bottom line - ask yourself- if I went to a retailer and they had this comics - what grade would it have for me to be happy to purchase it. |
