I need your advice old timers....I'm a bronze age collector and have now much limited space...so I have built up a shelf of cinder blocks and boards to host my comic boxes....my worry is that the heater vent in my room blows on some of the lower boxes so i'm worried that will degrade my comics even though they are boxed, boarded and bagged....I feel and know i'm doing the wrong thing but ran out of space....any advice for the hoarder comic collector who still can manage? Also, anyone know about comic book insurance? I have no clue...please help on the full Monte or in part...will double check all feedback but thanks!

There are companies out there who do offer collectors insurance (google can help). I have mine through my auto/home insurance company. They just did it as an add on to my policy.

thx...looking for someone who can stand behind an actual insurance company...they should be jumping at the bit.....or if not its all a scam. What would really make an impact is if this website would actually endorse an insurance company....???

Changing boards out in the comic bags will help. Desiccant is a cheap solution - this will help some too.

Put plenty of desiccant in the sides of the boxes (between the comics and the box) and replace very often (or as needed) absorbs that pesky humidity.

Put lower value books closer to the vent - I realize you have have to re-box, get books out of order - but if you label your boxes and use the CPG box function - this will keep straight what is where.

Not a cure all but a few suggestions.

I've been collecting for over 40 years and have picked up a few helpful tips. I have my books in a bedroom with the windows covered and the heater vents blocked, UV light is a very dangerous enemy and the more you can keep your books from heat, the better. All my best books are bagged and boarded in Mylar, its worth the extra cost, you'll never have to change them again. Wiggle (Hope this helps.)

I worked in an archive collection at a library growing up and decided when I got more valuable comics to use Archival envelopes. They are not sold at comic stores as they are not a "hobby" bag. You can't see through them (but so what as they are stored in a box right?) but it is special pH paper designed to counter acidity, a problem with older comics, and are stiff enough I don't use boards. They are also designed for long-term storage. Acid free boards can be found, but are expensive. Regular boards in mylar bags defeat the hole point of the mylar. I also keep the more special books in my collection lying flat, not upright like everyone advertises. It helps keep the air and moisture out as the weight presses them and they are less likely to bend being flat. Harder to view, but I don't take them out often.
As for your heater, if you can direct or block it's direct venting onto your boxes it would go a long way to their preservation. Just put something between them and the air will help, like thick plywood.
