Why is this civil war variant priced so high?

It is likely just a formula based on the ratio. If you look at sold (realized) copies on eBay it is nowhere near $250 |

Thus is the fate of most books published. In case you have never noticed the majority of books that have been and will be released, especially outside of the big two hero books, appreciate in value slowly. |

The character has been around for 12 years. Prices of her first appearance started going up a long time ago. They got up to around the $300 range last year they started taking off when it was revealed she would assume the Wolverine mantle. Anyone coming to the game now is way late. |

New CGC Case

It is bad. There is no doubt about it. The Newton rings are just minor compared to the waves on some books and color transfer. Then there is also shifting in the slab. Steve Borock said in his discount post that the way CGC is slabbing now was considered when they were starting up but it proved to be a bad option so they went with the now previous method. I completely agree that is is a really bad idea to have the book stay in place by sustained pressure on the perimeter of the book. I don't know what they were thinking but I think theyh were not thinking about the books at all.
CGC tried to downplay that the problems were "minor" and rare but that is not how it sounds going by reports all over the web. They also claim all is fixed without explain how it was fixed or that there was any "real" problem in the first place.
In other words CGC dropped the ball again on a problem. edited by oxbladder on 6/5/2016 |

I have limited interest DC so Rebirth has limited interest for me. I will pick up WW when it comes and try out a few thing like Supergirl, Batgril/BOP, and hmm that's it with the addition of Clean Room. DC is circling bowl. Gonna try just the Civil War main series. I read all the Spider-women titles anyway so Spider-Women was a no brainer. Subscription-wise it was a light week for me. I added a bunch of stuff, three or four trades and a few floppies. |

Story Arcs

No there isn't a way to get a reading order. Unless they actually list part numbers for cross-over series in the previews. Sometime you can look up cross-over stories on the interwebs and one of the pedia services will list parts but not often, if at all, in advance.
Previews are also vague because they want you to be just curious enough to pick up a book and not know the endgame of that issue. That way they can either hook you on the next issue or into buying tons of unnecessary extra issues, such as event cross-overs. edited by Oxbladder on 6/5/2016 |

Story Arcs

What I would try is, if you know the name of the story arc, type it into a web search and see if anything comes up. I have often found what I need info-wise that way (usually from Wikipedia or some other wiki). That may not help you until the story has started but you may get lucky. You could also email your online source to see if they can help you out in some way. They may even be able to reorder or set up a special pull system for when you are collecting a event series. |

Signing: value or destruction?
Oxbladder

Some will not consider a signature as damage, others will. Personally I think a grading system is pretty screwed up if you say that a signature/writing is and isn't damage. Why people cannot be happy with a signature/writing always being damage but still valuing creator signatures I just don't get. I do not have a problem a signed book to be a lower grade BUT valuing more than a book in that lower grade would normally go for.
Comic collectors are a weird and stupid lot. |

How to tell if it's a first print comic

Most will say in the publisher info inside the front or back page. However, without even opening the book you just look at the UPC code if it ends in a 1 it is a first print. |

9.6 with slight spine roll?
Oxbladder

That's not spine roll. That is the result of the book being misaligned during storage and the pressure has flattened all but the spine. It would not get above a 9.4 with that. Getting the book pressed should fix that and maybe the non-colour breaking creases. |

I assume you mean the first issue of the second series in 1987 not 1977?
Anyway, not sure what the blank price box indicates but it could be that back in the day this was one of the books redistributed in pack at grocery stores. Though I could find no indications that they did this with this particular issue. |

So on your copy the price/number box in the upper right has nothing at all in it? Not even an issue number?
I have a few dealers here that i could ask if they have seen that and what it could mean or if it was, in fact, a printing error. Hopefully I will remember to ask them this weekend and get back to this thread when I find out. |

Once in awhile I found a good deal but that was years ago and never a lot. I rarely bought lots. I rarely buy anything on eBay now as shipping is way too much. Often more than the book. |
