We're definitely in the process of restructuring these forums but hope you stick around and help us grow them once more!

Have you applied to be an admin or moderator yet? smile

So your question confused me a bit, so let me clarify.

Your CPG messages are currently less useful than you want, and you want it so when a member messages you, it automatically tells you which book they are inquiring about?

We have begun the process to purge old listings from members who have not been active on the site, so hopefully you'll see less of those. We also recommend you reach out to users with higher ranks, as they are the most active users on our site. The higher the rank, the longer they've been around and more active they have been within our community.

As you all know, the comics industry is in a bit of a boom right now and with all the new content, we find ourselves struggling to keep up. Many of the best databases in the world have countered this influx of new data by converting to a "wiki" system allowing users to contribute to the site, and now is the time for CPG to step into this realm as well.

Introducing the Super Computer Verification Page

For some time, we've had tools for our members to submit missing data into our system and up until now, each and every piece of data submitted was reviewed by an administrator or staffer at CPG prior to publishing the change live. We did this for a very simple reason: We want our published information to be correct.

But as the industry has exploded with more variants and new series than you can shake a stick at, this has caused an extreme backlog. Time that should be spent coding and improving the site had instead been spent approving comic covers and variants, and that's not an efficient way for us to grow. So we decided that if our members are trustworthy enough to provide us the data, they should be trustworthy enough to also approve it. And thus we are moving our site towards a wiki model where our members have a much greater say and control over the facts we publish onto our site.

The more you assist us with entering and verifying data, the more your Member Rank increases. As your Member Rank increases, your "trustworthy-ness" also increases, and you can verify data on your own without crowd-sourced assistance. Your sales listings will appear higher, your want lists will appear higher, and your overall experience with the site will be improved. As they say, the cream will rise to the top, and it is our hope that this system helps identify the most active and most interested members of our community so that when a new member joins and is looking for someone to trade comics with - they find a great candidate right away.

For new members, establishing and growing your member rank is quick and easy for the first few levels so don't worry - you won't be left behind. It's easy to establish yourself quickly as a trusted site member.

Please give our new verification page a try today and provide us with some feedback. We currently only have cover scans, issue dates, and creators available for verification, but we'll introduce more features soon. We'll also allow for you to submit pricing data to us when you see books that you believe may not be properly represented.

Feel free to leave feedback here or email us directly using this form.

Hi Pro,

As with any sales situation, it's all a negotiation. Our guide here is just that - a guide. Because we say a book is worth $5 doesn't mean you can't find it on ebay for $3, it doesn't mean you SHOULDN'T spend $7 on it if you want to.... it is just a representation of general trends with the book so you have a starting point for negotiating.

We do see most people doing package deals for large lots of low books, but there is something to be said for listing them individually for sale as well. If someone is missing that book to complete their set, or it's a book they specifically are looking for, that adds more value to the sale.

With regards to grading, our general rule of thumb is that if you think you have a 7.0, you should probably deduct a point or two just to be on the safe side. Grading is a very skilled art and you'd be surprised how easy it is to overlook minor details that really downgrade a book. Sometimes they aren't even your fault - could be manufacturing defects.

Sadly, there's not at this time. It's an extremely problematic process due to the way comics are named, but we have some ideas on how to tackle that in the future.

I mean on this site and on EBAY. I haven't decided which platform (or both) I'm going to use. I got comics to sell and I need any advice I can get. Will anybody buy the blemished one's if I carefully price them accordingly cheap. I was hoping I could throw in a real mixed bag, mixed dates, titles, conditions. Will anybody go for it? Do I need to pair up like-with-like mostly?

Generally speaking, if it's individual books, the buyer should always pay shipping. Especially for low cost books. But for lots? High price books? Work shipping into the price.

Water is among the worst things that can happen to good books upset

Without actually seeing and touching the book, we can never know exactly what the grade may be, but know that a 10.0 grade is EXTREMELY rare. A 10.0 is literally taken straight off the press and immediately preserved. I've seen brand new, off-the-rack comics graded at 9.2 and lower, so the short answer is that you're very unlikely to have a 10.0 on your hands.

Hi Phil,

You are correct! Any single piece of data takes 10 points to officially "lock in". An administrator is worth 10 points so when we verify data, it automatically passes. For our members, if you have been a long time member and get to an 8 or 9, then we know you're highly likely to be correct, so we only need one or two other sets of eyes on it.

For new members (i.e. new accounts), we have no idea their experience or expertise. They could be false accounts. So we feel if 10 new members all say something is correct, it has to be.

And then in the middle is everyone else with varying levels of "trust" smile

Import list?

Wish it were that simple.

There's a REALLY big problem and a reason why mass import programs are very rare in comics, and that's that the industry as a whole never really settled on a unique identification system for books.

For example, in the spreadsheet posted above, they listed the books "Amazing Spider-man". Well, is that volume 1, 2, or 3? Or is it Volume 1 of the Pocket Books reprint? Because all of those volumes have the exact same title.

So, what about the official book title as listed in the indicia? Those ARE the official titles.... they don't print the official titles based on uniqueness.

How about UPC code? Well, there are a ton of books that don't have UPC codes, or the codes differ depending on where you got them. How can we import variants without UPCs? What about foreign books with different codes? There's no giant database for us to download every UPC and even if there was, we would have trouble knowing where to put the UPCs based on the title problem above.

So we would need an excel sheet to contain the exact name, volume, issue number, UPC, and probably some other data to match EXACTLY what we have in the system, and even then, we'd probably need to display for you what we *think* is the match, and have you verify every single book just to be safe.

It's a toughie.
