Had a mystery to solve before I could get to these... was driving me crazy. Couldn't find the records for the purchase some of these Kulls. It finally dawned on me that they were part of 20 comic lot that I won for $16.50, but had misplaced 5 of the issues somewhere at the store. I never transferred the data from my laptop, because I hadn't located the missing issues. I never really did a thorough search for them, but I think I know where they might be, which is where I was also thinking some other Kulls from another auction might be hiding, but enough about that.

So Kull 7,19,20 I won from the previous seller along with a couple of others that were dupes for $1.39 each. The Tomb of Dracula 27 was also $1.39 from that same seller, and the Thor 195, also from that same seller was $2.74.

KULL #4 VG+ | #12 GD | #15 GD

KULL #9 GD+ | #12 VG+ | #15 VG/F

KULL #16 VG+ | #17 VG/F | #19 VG+

KULL #20 F/VF | TOMB OF DRACULA #27 VG+ | THIOR #195 VG

That's all for now. I'll be taking pics again pretty soon, but it'll probably be a week or so before get a chance to edit and post them. Until then, see ya 'round the boards. =(O.O)=

pricing and grading comics

You might find someone at a local comic shop willing to do it for a price or you can learn to grade yourself.

Here are two web pages on grading:
http://comicspriceguide.com/comic-book-grading
http://www.mycomicshop.com/help/grading

Keep in mind that comics may only have 1 of the flaws listed for the highest grade section not 1 of each.
Then maybe 2 or 3 for the next highest, then a few more for the next, and so on.
With the lower grades having a larger allotment and increased variety of types of damage.

Don't expect to grasp everything about grading overnight.
It may take years depending on how often you grade and how many comics you grade.

Nice Man-wolf (i have a few of those but not the full run, Need a couple more) & they are good reading too, Lots of fun!
Don't know much about Ghost seen a few here & there.
Oh! you have that Aliens VS Predator cover, It is a sweet book to have. Highly under appreciated.
I had a heap of Turok & Magnus books but they are all long gone now (gave them away in the late 90's Lol).

I'm still missing #30 & 33 from the CotL run. (Just added those to a new list of books to actively seek. They were on a general list, but then so are thousands of other books.)

I've been slowly working on Ghost for several years along with the other Dark Horse "Comics Greatest World" books. Not a real active search more like if I come across them in lots or dollar bins, I'll buy them. I don't remember if I've read many(eventually I will), but it's the quality of the artwork drives me to collect them.

Here's what I have:
CGW: Arcadia - 1,3-4
CGW: Golden City - 3-4
CGW: Steel Harbor - 2-4
CGW: Cinnabar Flats - 1
Ghost
Special 1
Vol.1 1-11,13-19,26-36
Vol.2 3
Ghost & the Shadow 1
Ghost/Hellboy Special 2
X - 7-9,11-13,18
X(Vol.2) - 13

I'd love to get all the Dark Horse Alien books. I've never really sought them out, now maybe I will. (Just started another list.smile)

I have been buying Valiant lots on occasion. My set total is 395. The total cost to get this collection is $163.86 for what's in there plus $26.00 for the extras I have for sale minus $20.01 for what I've sold, $169.85. Still missing most of the higher priced books, though, so I'm sure that number will jump if I ever truly attempt to complete it. Looks like Harbinger will be the toughest, as its prices are jumping.

MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. 7 VG+ | MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. 8 FN | MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. 10 VG+

"Man from Uncle" comics for about $5 each - I'd hit that. Very cool.
Also like you Amazing Spider-Man comic.
On the minus side - I have a number of Atlas -Seaboard comic myself - including Iron Jaw.
Just does not seem to be much value in these.

P. S. Check out my forum thread for my comic pics...shameless plug...

Always nice finding any silver Gold Key's for that price, but extra nice for the Uncles as I liked the TV series.(have the briefcase DVD set)

I scored an even better deal recently: #10,14,18, & 22 for $6.99

I'm up to 7 Atlas books now. I'm glad they're low value, though. That way I can easily afford them. wink

I'll be sure to check your thread.

Lots of cool books. What I don't have, I want.

What is the deal with the pic sizes? I can see the full size of TDC in the reply box, and below in the previous messages the pics are also larger. Is just with photobucket? Has anyone tried using flickr?

I believe there should be a consensus within the comic book collecting community of what the money book should be regarding 1st appearances and cameos.

Money book?

Your statement is flawed. With your examples below, I take that you mean 1st appearance cameos and 1st full appearances.

genuine_article_comics wrote:

I know this is very difficult to do but the discrepancies are huge in what books command big(ger) money.

Hulk 180 vs. Hulk 181
X-men 266 vs. x-men annual 14
Jimmy Olsen 134 vs Forever People 1

First off, demand is always the key determinant in price.

In Hulk 180 Wolverine is only on 1 panel of the last page, so that's definitely a cameo.

There's a bigger difference with Gambit's 1st appearance cameo. He's not introduced, and he doesn't even have a line(pretty sure). He's just standing there. I think in only the one panel.(It doesn't even seem like it should qualify as a cameo). His 1AC has more to do with a quirk of the publication dates. The story #266 was obviously written and drawn before the annual, but it was published after. Because of this, there has been no great demand for the annual.

Darkseid is just a talking head on a TV screen in SPJO #134, so you'd think the values would be similar(in ratio) to that of Wolverine. (My copy of the latter is in much better condition than my copy of the former. So I'd be fine with that. #humblebrag) Supply could be the main factor. Forever People #1 probably had a much bigger print run than SPJO. Also, he's only on 4 pages of FP#1, so he's not the crux of the story, but I guess it's long enough to qualify for more than a cameo.

Also, Darkseid's 2nd appearance was in SPJO #135, which is a larger cameo than his first. I'm surprised its NM value is only $55. Must be lack of knowledge of this, that has kept the price where it is.

How and why do some books seem to get it right in terms of correct value placement and others seemingly get it totally wrong?

Of which books do you speak? And how do you mean 'get it wrong'?

The Poly Bag

robotcat
On the Superman 75 guide page it says: "Black Bag Edition. Gravestone Cover inside. Valued full grade lower without bag."

Notice that is says 'without bag' and not 'outside of bag', so I'm guessing that it doesn't affect the value.

I have heard from many folks over the years, that the polybags used are deleterious towards the comic and should be removed. So in recent years, whenever I came across one that was bagged in such a manner, I would remove it from the bag, and if the bag had some sort of marking on it(like X-Force #17), after having cut the bag's top off neatly, I would fold the bag and put it on the other side of the backing board.

Now, granted, this is a $2 book, so probably not the greatest example, but then other than Superman #75, that have book values of any significance? (I'm unfamiliar with the FF death of Torch issue number and value)

Separately, I think the most common bagged comics that I repeatedly come across are ASM #365 and its 3 other 30th anniversary counterparts. Those came out 24 years ago, and having opened one up as recently as sometime earlier this year, I have never noticed any kind of ill affects from the bag, but then I wouldn't know exactly what kind I would be trying to find.

Except that is not true in every case. See X-23 #1 Dell'Otto Variant, SPJO #134, etc.

And that's the crux of this thread. I've posted this topic before the crash and thought I'd put it back up. The logic seems to apply to some books but not all and I don't understand why. Case in point the books Oxbladder mentioned...and there are more examples.

I'm not familiar NYX #3. Does X-23 only make a cameo in that? What about her appearance in NYX #4?
[current values: NYX #3 - $430 | #4 - $34 | X-23 #1B(1:25) - $250]

That being said, I would still assume both of those examples just go back to supply and demand.

RE: SPJO #134 - In case you've forgotten(and shame on you if you have), Kirby was quite popular, and in the 1970s his new books were heavily Printed, Promoted, and Preserved(This is the PPP not to be confused with the PPR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf7eKXKmi24). SPJO was written and drawn by Kirby, but was really very popular at the time? Probably not. It was a secondary Superman title, that had most likely seen its heyday 10 years prior.

[I still think SPJO #135 is undervalued. If you can find a copy on the cheap, you may want to snag one. It has the first real look at Darkseid plus Kirby story/art and a cover by Neal Adams.]

The title you seek is X-Man Annual #1996: http://comicspriceguide.com/collection/marvel/x-man/1996/piyqls

'Sins of the Father' is the name of the main story, and it's connected to the Age of Apocalypse story arcs.

You can the supplies on amazon if you don't live near a craft store.

now for some pics...

Picked these Doctor Strange books in a lot for about $.63 a piece.

The Doctor Strange came with the above lot, the rest below came in 2 different lots.
All the comics in this post came from the same seller: hypnotronic
They, also, came with other comics that I already had, so there ones
(Purchase prices are based on price guide values. They're pretty much 1/2 guide.)

Iron Jaw 1 FN ($1.08) | Conan the Barbarian 49 F/VF ($1.95)

MTIO 9 FN+ ($1.30) | GS Chillers 1 VG- ($.91) | GS MoKF 3 VG+ (

Action Comics 445 F/VF ($1.81) | Our Fighting Forces 154 VG/F ($1.57) | Warlord 6 VG+ ($.40)

First up, an Alien Worlds lot that I won for $11.99.
(There was also a #1, but I already had a copy, so no pic.)

The Inhumans, I got as part of a mixed lot for which I paid about 30% over guide( the others were nice issues, they were just all low grade books, that I already had). The Defenders were part of an all Defenders lot that I got for less than 1/2 guide. I already have a full run, but these two were upgrades. The extras included #27, the 1st Starhawk.

Inhumans 4 FN ($3.73) | Defenders 29 FN+ ($1.34) | Defenders 44 FN+ ($.67)

I'll have more pics tomorrow night.

Here's 8 of 9 books, I picked up for $10.32. (Ninth was Chips and Vanilla #1 - already had a copy).

They're mostly in the FN range with the exception of Xenozoic Tales (VF) and Blue Loco (NM-), but I mostly just got them for reading, so condition wasn't much of concern when I bid, especially with the purchase price being just $1.15 each.
