There is a good grading guide with pictures here. http://artfulinvestments.com/comic-book-grading/ there is also one a Heritage Auctions and other sites - several around. I like this one as it has pictures.

That's a really nice page on grading. It seems that a llot of sites will have grading criteria but inly in text form. Comics are a visual medium so any grading resource should include pictures to show examples of what is and is not acceptable for a given grade. Thanks for the link KDS.

I am new to the comic world. I have a small collection about 400 marvel comics all star wars. My question is how do I get my comics graded? Once graded do I go off the graded post and price accordingly? I am trying to ask a fair market value! Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Grading is done by a third party service that obviously charges for their service. CGC and CBCS are the two primary services. Look them up online for a cost for each.

Before you send anything away to be graded there are some things you should do.
1. Examine your comics for any damage, folds, spine creases, color loss, tears, blunt corners. Try to determine the condition. Every single flaw or imperfection affects the grade.
2. After you've determined the grade look at the guide and see what the raw value is. Typically if the raw is $100 or more, grading will be worth the time and expense.

I hope that helps,
R

I am new to trying to sell my comics. I was wondering if and when you sell your comics on ebay, are you going to pay government tax? What about to ebay itself?

why not look that up on ebay? they have all the convoluted info, start here: https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/taxes-import-charges?id=4121
you don't pay taxes TO ebay, you just pay listing and commission fees which they deduct from the selling prices, INCLUDING on shipping charges. after that it depends on how much you sell ($ amount and number of sales) before they send a 1099 or whatever form to the guvment for INCOME taxes, and SALES taxes are another matter depending on which state you're in. they cover all that stuff, have fun.

I have found that the Spot-on Grading System App is very helpful for the non-professional grader. For me, it consistently provides accurate grading to within 1 to 2 points (.1) of the 10 point grading system. I recommend the app, especially for those without significant experience grading comics.

I am a long time collector but a raw newbie to trying to cull down some of my comics. I started just posting randomly some I had piling up in my office, sold a few, but my question is I cannot see if anyone is 'viewing any of the posted comics? Am I missing something? Or just making some mistakes in the listings?

Good Morning all.

Just joined, so thanks for the acceptance, because I too have comics I'm also trying to sell because I'm not a collector.

I have run through some of the questions and answers here, which has given me some insight into what I need to do but I have some other questions too.

I have noticed some sellers list their comics with a grading determination in the listing yet the comic is not encapsulated in plastic with a grading companies name or number. how do they grade their comics?

Is it more enticing to a potential buyer when a listing says "ungraded", so a bulk buy would be cheaper or even negotiable, rather then a bunch of graded comics which would obviously be higher in price? In this scenario, the buyer might hit the jackpot or maybe make nothing above the sale price?

To sell on Comics Price Guide you do need to grade the books yourself. Here is a grading guide
https://comicspriceguide.com/comic-book-grading

We don't really offer a bulk option unless you count the classified ads.

Welcome to the site and the forums!

"Grading" does not just mean sent to a 3rd party and encapsulated. All comics have some sort of grade. Un-encapsulated comics are called "raw". So, when you go to list your comics for sale, your best bet is to take some of the advice from earlier in this thread and learn, at the very least, the rudiments of grading. That way you can give an approximate grade for each of your comics. You'll find most people, if you list a comic at 8.0 and it's actually a 7.0->7.5 won't care too much. The exception to that rule is very high value comics. But for regular issues, just learn how to grade and do your best.

THANKS GUYS!!!

I am taking notes for sure.

So whilst going through this site, I saw I could add my comics to my collection piggy backing on someone else's listing which was so cool to do however I think there were listing errors for example direct edition and newsstand editions. Looking at my comics, the DIRECT EDITION has a bar code on the cover whilst the others do not and some listings have DIRECT EDITION written on their listing but their cover picture does not and the other way round. I also found 5 of my comics not listed on the site and I could not load my pictures but damn besides that, this site has everything comic book people need.

There are direct editions and newstand editions listed here on the site. Depending on the year of the books some direct editions still have barcodes but will say direct edition with the barcode some direct editions will have pictures in the area that a barcode would normally be. As for the 5 comics you can't find on here, let us know what they are and we can help you locate them as well or the admins can get it added if it's truly not already on the site.

NOTE that direct editions with barcodes have a 5 digit check digit number were newsstand editions have a 2 digit check digit number

This morning I watched the tutorial on the app regarding the 28 steps of grading and I took a comic and graded it myself according to the steps I was shown. Now I might have made a mistake or two but my grading of the comic was a 7.0 and that one had 3 small tears on the inner pages now I am wondering how the one comic I have will grade because it looks mint from the cover and I'm too afraid to take it out of the plastic cover.

I am new to this. Just pulled out 3 boxes of comics that were put away in the in 91. all new and not circulated. I think I have finished entering into my collection on here. I have several that increase in value by quite a bit by having them graded. Is it worth it on some of these. Is there a market for them.

If they are in-demand key comics and the values seem to be a lot higher if they are slabbed then yes, it's worth it if all you want to do is sell them. If it's for you to keep, it's entirely up to you if you want them slabbed or just put them in something safe for display/storage.

Other ways to get an idea of value could be:
1) Got to Mycomicshop (https://www.mycomicshop.com/) and search for the issue, see what they are selling it for.
2) You can go to eBay, search for those issues, and then check the "Sold Items" box near the bottom left column to see what they are selling for on eBay as well.

I agree with Xvipah73 posted here. Do you homework and check more than one source for the price of a graded comic. CPG does and awesome job on raw comics but is sometime wonky on the prices of graded comics. Yes, some could be worth grading. You will have to do the accounting on the cost to get graded to see if it is worthwhile.
