Synopsis for "War-Torn: Chapter 1"

Hippolyta (Dies)

The Amazons of Themyscira are divided on the decision that Wonder Woman made to allow the sons of Themyscira to reside with them, when they have spent centuries untainted by the presence of men. Dessa tries to be the voice of reason against the adamant Clyemne, but Hippolyta's own sister Derinoe speaks up, reminding that the blood of the Amazons still runs in the veins of these men - and their resentment will one day turn to the rage of an Amazon warrior. She herself has always resented Hippolyta for allowing Zeus into her bed, and now she condemns Hippolyta's daughter for letting the result of their failings come to roost. Diana's actions will strip the Amazons of what they are, and make them human.

Diana, meanwhile, has been called to meet with the Justice League to discuss strange environmental events that have rendered small thriving villages around the world destroyed. All human life in the villages appears to be gone - only vegetation remains.

In Thailand, Swamp Thing investigates the same event, wondering what could affected so many lives at once. He is attacked without warning by Wonder Woman, who blames him for what happened. Annoyed, he wraps her in vines and explains that he is not responsible. Aquaman intervenes, and defuses the situation. As he and Diana leave Swamp Thing to his investigations, Arthur chastises her for failing to know who her enemy is, and senses her irrational anger.

After some prodding, Diana admits that she now feels like she has more responsibilities than she bargained for. She has become Queen of the Amazons, and as such has to keep her sisters from killing their brothers. Not to mention her boyfriend Superman's recent problems, and the fact that she is now part of the pantheon of Olympians. Her time and attentions are divided in more ways than she can control. She isn't giving her best to every place that needs it. Arthur reminds that if she must let someone down, she should make sure that that someone isn't herself.

Returning to Themyscira, Diana meets with Dessa to ensure that things are going smoothly with the transition to having men on Paradise Island. She believes that the Amazons need their brothers' fresh perspectives. Dessa interrupts to explain that she's got bad news. The rains on Themyscira have seen to it that the clay statue that was Diana's mother has crumbled. Hippolyta is dead.
