Headlok finds the Griffin roaming in the Adirondack Mountains and uses his mental powers to enslave the him. Headlok then cleverly turns his scheme to the West Coast Avengers by claiming to have spotted Ben Grimm, a.k.a. the Thing whom the team was looking for after he had gone missing on the eve of being offered official membership of their team. Headlok ambushes them with the enslaved Griffin, and attempts to take over their minds one by one. He succeeds in taking over the mind of Wonder Man and pitts him against his teammate Iron Man. The Avenger Tigra is able to calm the Griffin's rage, however, using her empathic ability. It turns out that the Thing is indeed nearby and he joins the battle. Headlok, not knowing this, has not been using his powers to hide himself from sight or to mentally influence the Thing, and thus is taken by surprise by him and swiftly defeated
