Contains Two Stories: A Firm Offer! & The Obligation!
Synopsis of Story 1: "A Firm Offer!"
The former Defenders, Cage and Daimon Hellstrom, meet in an alleyway over a man who is near death. They fight momentarily before realizing that they know each other and that they didn't kill him. Cage moans that they will never get to the hospital in time to save the man, his buddy Tyrone (a street informant of some sort). Hellstrom tries to heal Tyrone, but the old man burns into ash before their eyes. Confused, they head back to the Heroes for Hire offices, where Cage says that he won't stop until he finds the killer. They search the streets, beating on thugs and pushing for information, finding little other than that Tyrone had become involved with the occult. Hellstrom opens a portal to the "unseen world," finding Satannish and his minions ready for an assault, and the two heroes are quickly subdued. Tyrone, still alive in Hell, reveals that he had forsaken life on Earth as Satannish had offered him an eternal place in Hell in exchange for his service. Cage and Hellstrom break free as Satannish whisks his minions away, but Cage feels that Tyrone was confused and acted like anyone else at the end of his rope would by joining up with evil, and attacks Satannish to give his old friend back. Satannish smacks Cage away, but gives Tyrone back in return for a good struggle. However, Tyrone had already sold his life away, and dies in Cage's arms, thanking him for showing what a true friend can be.
Synopsis of Story 2: "The Obligation!"
This story is a reprint of the story "...What Price a Life?" in Spider-Man and The Hulk (Chicago Tribune Giveaway) Supplemental June 1980.
Hulk is on a rampage in Manhattan and the Police Swat Team is there to stop him. In a crowd of bystanders is Peter Parker, who changes into his Spider-Man costume, hoping to stop the destruction and also snap a few pictures for the Daily Bugle. Spidey engages Hulk in battle and lures him away to a deserted warehouse district. Spidey then hides until Hulk calms down and changes back to Bruce. Spidey takes the opportunity to don his civvies and, as Peter Parker, offers to help Bruce escape from the police. Peter gives Bruce his last five dollars, explaining that a total stranger gave him the money when he was in need, obligating him to use that money to help out another in need. As Bruce heads out of town, he encounters an old man who was the victim of muggers; calling for help he runs into the muggers who start to beat him up. Turning into the Hulk he scares off the punks then turns to the old man. The old man's despair strikes a chord of compassion deep within the Hulk, so the Green Giant hands the old man Peter's five dollars and walks off.
