The story begins with Peter arguing with his ship's computer, Lydia, about his relationship with Kitty Pryde. Peter reveals that his is going to the vicinity of Earth to find Thanos, but doesn't intend to see Kitty. Kitty is upset by this. Peter intends to use the Mandalay Gem, which he stole, in order to destroy Thanos. Peter locates Thanos on Earth's moon and attacks him as he is building a monument to Mistress Death. As they fight, they discuss the truce they agreed to as they sought to escape the Cancerverse.
Thanos is surprised that his cosmic energy isn't destroying Peter until he notices that Peter possesses the Mandalay Gem. Thanos criticizes Peter being driven by guilt and reveals that the gem is Celestial technology, which Peter may not even fully understand how to use. Peter defeats Thanos, but Thanos notes that killing him on the Moon would cause the Moon and Earth's destruction by the release of his cosmic energy.
Peter says he will contact the Avengers to incarcerate Thanos. Thanos makes good his escape and advises Peter to take up something more befitting "a bleeding heart" besides vengeance. Peter is picked up by his ship and decides there's something he needs to do. It appears that he leaves the Mandalay Gem on the surface of the Moon. The scene changes to the New Xavier School, where Kitty and Illyana are talking about Kitty's "boyfriend", Peter.
Iceman interrupts their conversation to call them outside to look at a message left for Kitty in a hillside, which turns out to be an apology from Peter made out of flowers. Iceman shows Kitty video of Peter laying out the flowers and Kitty is touched by Peter's apology.
The final scene is of Mister Knife, County Bligh, and the great beast from Bligh's fortress arriving at the Graveyard of the Celestials. Mister Knife reveals that the Mandalay Gem will open the way to obtaining the Black Vortex, one of the most powerful artifacts in the universe.
