Buy comic book press or use service

If the goal is pure profit then you have to do some serious number crunching/weighing of the benefits of a press/clean. Sometimes it's just not worth it.

But, I have had quite a few books pressed just because I wanted them to look better in my PC or in one of my displays.

Books I plan to actually send in for grading I send in with a press screen and let the professionals decide if a press would help at all.

New variant additions

Hi,

I've noticed there's been a massive lag in adding/approving new variants for various titles. Is there something more we could be doing to help that process go faster?

I have a few variants in for SiKtC from Feb that still haven't been approved, which is why I'm asking.

Along those same lines, it would be awesome to have an easier way of tracking variant submissions than having to remember every one we've put in and then going to look them up separately (I'm mostly bringing this up for collection purposes. If you approve my variant submissions and I don't even know it, I may never even add it). smile

I've got stuff in from Boom (Grim & SiKtC), DC (Harley Quinn), and Dynamite (Various Vampirella and at least 1 Red Sonja) that I can think of off the top of my head. I think there may be others (I prolly should have done what glarimer was saying and bookmarked them all) but I've forgotten. There are so many modern variants that come around it's super hard to keep track, I just put them in when I see them and move on smile.

I don't think you're wrong to be angry, TMNT #1 itself goes for multitudes of thousands. Where did you "send it in" that you only got $2700?

That's an awesome collection!

I've been doing something similar with Ace Comics. I decided to try to get from 50-100. Those are hard enough to find, trying to get 1-100 or 1-50 seemed a bit out of reach for now.

I still have quite a ways to go as I just started a year or so ago. I have 18 of them for now, but, like you, I look for ones with good cover appeal. I try to avoid a lot of detached covers/pages and any sort of staple rust, etc... I expected it to be difficult, but it's been pretty crazy trying to find them. Still, it's fun at least.

So did someone just go in and delete all of the variant submissions? Because now all the ones I listed above that I had variant submission in for are gone. But they have not been approved (or at least they aren't listed with the various titles). I know all these variants exist, I own them.

Do I really have to go in and resubmit?

Yea, same here, I didn't have 54 mind you.

Maybe we're just not seeing them anymore for some reason (Since Ron just listed a few of mine that I know I have out there). But none of my variant submissions are showing in the variant screen as awaiting approval anymore either.

Looks like they're back now. That was weird.

Thanks for sorting it out!

I still think some sort of "Your variant submissions" page we could use to track them in 1 place would be pretty epic smile

Polybag Issues

Yea. I learned that lesson a few years ago when I found my Ultimate Fallout #4 in the box and it was still in its polybag. Because of that polybag it's never graded above a 9.4 (and I've tried pressing, etc.. multiple times)

So now all books come out of polybags as soon as I get them so they don't get any of those lines, etc...

Worth Getting Graded? Golden Era Barn Finds

Not all GA are worth getting graded. But, if some of them are in really good condition (GA is relative when we say really good) they might be.

Any GA DC comics are definitely worth looking in to, the older "funny" comics are probably less so unless they feature something cool like the first appearance of Blondie or Popeye or something like that (in comic books).

I agree with CPG as a great pressing service.

Also, if you want pressing and grading, CBCS is a far better service as far as pressing goes. The prices might be a little lower in general for sale (but that has been evening out recently) than CGC though. But when we say a little lower, we're talking, as of recently, 1-2% at absolute most.

Forums here are a good bet. Also both the CGC and CBCS forums would be a good place to look and talk to people.

Look in to mylar/mylites and full/half backs from egerber. It's just as safe from a "protecting the comic from aging" point of view as even slabbing, perhaps moreso. Obviously there's the hard case to consider, but it's also very much cheaper. Besides if your comics are in a situation where you need the hard case to protect them from damage, something very bad is happening anyway smile

As an aside, I don't follow eBay prices, cause I don't sell slabbed comics on eBay. On MCS (mycomicshop.com) the differences between CBCS and CGC are fairly negligible. On top of that CBCS, while still a long wait, is quicker than CGC at the lower tiers and comparable (for cheaper) at the higher tiers. So you get the slabs back quicker, or in a similar timeframe, for cheaper. Which should make up for any sales differences you might see, at least on MCS. I can't speak for comicconect or eBay (or other venues like Mercari) because, again, I don't sell slabs at any of those places.

I'm not going to follow up on any arguments about Poly v Mylar. I have my choice, you'd do well to do some research and see how you feel about it. After all, they're you're comics smile

Is there a market for lower graded comics?

Xvipah73
Xvipah73
There's definitely a market for expensive/key books in lower condition. People who want to own say, Secret Wars #8 without paying $100+ for it.

There's also a market for reader comics, people who might want to read all of Infinity Wars w/out messing up a NM copy. But the market is pretty selective. In other words, finding the right people/places/prices to get people to buy can be harder to do. I tend to list lots of books for $1-$2/per on eBay of lower graded issues, as long as they connect to one another in some way people will usually buy them. Sometimes it does take a while though.

Also another way to sell off books is to just do random lots of 25 (or whatever number). Usually you price them around $.50/per, so maybe $25 at 15'ish+shipping (I usually do $21 w/"free shipping")

Issue with uploading Cover Scans

Xvipah73
Xvipah73
HI,

So, it's actually not an issue with the uploading so much as an issue with cover scans I do upload just disappearing.

I don't get any misses like they are wrong somehow. I also don't get any hits like they approved; and they are not showing in the issues descriptions. I upload them, they show in the covers tab of the data verification section, and then suddenly they're gone. This has happened before but I just kept uploading things until it worked. But now it seems less like a glitch and more like a real problem?

The 2 issues in particular this time are:
Vampirella Strikes #2B (https://comicspriceguide.com/titles/vampirella-strikes/2B/phwynur)
Vampirella / Dracula: Unholy #6B (https://comicspriceguide.com/titles/vampirella-dracula-unholy/6B/phwyjvt)

In both cases I've uploaded the cover at least 2 times and both times they have just disappeared. I know they're the right covers, I own them. And I know they are scanned/cropped well, and like I said I haven't gotten any misses from them. Any ideas?

So the ones I was uploading were .jpg's

They were much smaller than that though, like in the 200k range. So I scanned them in at a higher resolution to see if maybe they were just plain too small or something and I've tried again.

If that's not it though, then the rest of the variables should be being met.

So I don't know if someone just jumped on them quickly or if the problem was actually that the originals were too small, but they've now been approved and are in place on the issues.

Weird.

Regardless, thanks for following up!
