Do older bags and boards cause damage to comics?

If they aren't Mylar or Mylites, old bags start to break down after awhile. They'll give off acidic gases that can shorten the life of your comics. The acid-free backing boards start turning acidic also. One key indicator is if they smell like plastic inside the bag. Yellowing is a sign that they have gone past their normal life span. Mylar tends to not turn yellow. I've seen it get cloudy/hazy, but not yellow.

If you want your comics to last as long as possible, you should probably rebag them and swap out the boards also. in all honesty though, the comics can last for many years in old yellow bags. Most collectors would swap them out rather than have any damage occur. It really depends on how many generations you want them to last.

Bad amateur restoration - ink on edge lines

I have about two dozen old Batman and Detective comics from the 1950s. Someone attempted some bad amateur restoration by using a black felt tip marker - they tried to draw over some of the edge lines and dark areas on the covers. Aside from the restoration ink damage, most of these comics are in the VG to VG+ range. What does this ink damage do to their value and condition? Thanks for any info.

This was common in the 60's and early 70's among those who sold comics. It made the covers more presentable. I don't think it was done maliciously. It would be like using tape to tape a label to a can if the label fell off.

The defect is writing on the cover, so you just have to look at that and factor all of the other defects to determine the grade. I don't sit around grading comics, so I can't tell you what defects are allowed at one grade vs. another.

To accurately grade the comics, you need to do a page count. I've seen a lot of low grade collections from that time period that had comics missing centerfolds or even single pages.

Thanks Defiant1 for your informative response. I decided to replace all the bags and boards in my collection. I appreciate the advice.

That's probably a good decision. It really makes them look better too.

I relate more to Mike Judge's humor. Southpark's humor is so similar to mine that I avoid watching it. I was drawing a cartoon at the time Southpark came out and I'd have to scrap story ideas because someone would say "Oh yeah, they did that on last night's episode of Southpark." At one point, it was even being arranged for me to meet a Southpark producer to have them possibly turn my comic into an animated series. I backed out because it would've disrupted my life too much with no guarantee of it coming to fruition. To me though, Team America is the funniest movie ever made. I've seen Family Guy episodes where the only time I found it was funny was when they ripped off another show's content bit for bit.

2 covers exist, but the variant is the only comic published by Catfish that I don't own.

Collectors are extremely picky on condition, so simply stating that you bagged them and never read them is not adequate to determine the grade. Any slight spine crease or "non-square" corner affects condition. It's not uncommon to see VF or worse condition comics on a new comics rack depending upon how the retailer handled them. To get the most value, you're going to have to actually grade the higher dollar books with a grading guide and go from there. People buying a bulk collection are going to base what they are willing to pay on the higher dollar comics and how fast they think they can sell them. If you want to get the highest return for the full collection in a relatively short time period, your best bet is probably selling to a retailer for about 25% of guide value. If you want to get everything the collection is worth, you'll need to accurately grade the higher dollar comic and sell those separately. That will stick you with comics that are very hard to sell for any price. You'd probably have to make small sets of similar books and hope to get complete sell through. I really don't think anyone is going to give you $1,000 for a set of books that guide at $1350. Collectors who want the books are living on a tight budget. If they had that much money to spend, they are going to look for better bargains without an immediate dent to the wallet. They buy them in smaller lots as they could afford it. If selling comics was easy, I'd be buying a house with the worth of my collection.

I had donated some comics to his collection through Mark Evanier after his house fire. It was a big loss to comics. He passed away several months ago, so this isn't new today.

You could try a local comic shop in your area. You could send a list to https://www.mycomicshop.com/ , but I have no experience selling to them.
