How to Sell Silver Age Collection

Selling large amount of books is a difficult process. If you have no time limit on the sale of the books you can slowly piece it out via eBay, local shows, Facebook groups, etc. Keep in mind that shipping expenses and whatnot can start to mount too. Then you could also venture out to different stores and field offers. Keep in mind that stores are only going to offer 40-60% of market value so you need to find out know what your market values are. Prices can vary region to region. You also consign your books through stores (online or local) or through auction site like Heritage or ComicLink (there are others). You sill lose out with percentage takes.

As for grading, it is going to depend. High demand keys are usually worth grading but not necessarily in every grade so you have to do the research. any high grade book before '65 is probably worth getting graded as it will bring a good premium. Grading can get expensive though so you have to still do a bit of research to see if the return is worth the expense and time.

In the modern section you should probably have: NYX #3 (still garners good dollars raw and slabbed despite the hate) and X-23 #1 Dell'Otto variant (not sure of raw values but a 9.8 will get you $1200-$1500 easy) as well. I can probably come up with more but I am at work right now.

Well collector's are fickle things. On a previous version of this board there were a number of folks that admitted they didn't like picking up a title that was well into the run. They never really gave a good reason. So that was part of why the reboots cycle at DC and Marvel started. Plus the bean counters at both companies saw it was great for numbers.

Now, they seem to have revised history and don't seem to have a problem with legacy numbers.

The only things consistent about collectors is they, in general, don't have anything nice to say about comics from the past 20-30 years (EVERYTHING before that is brilliant though) and everything wrong with comics now (and in the past) is due to the publishers and nothing to do with them. You wanna know why "lather, rinse, repeat" is done? Why there are variants? Look in the mirror. Oh and this myth the books from X previous era were significantly better than X .... it revisionist history at its finest. That history is what collectors hold onto with a death grip and make it very, very hard for publishers to be able to deliver more than lather, rinse repeat.

As for log in issues, it is only the forum that gives me issues. I cannot log in at all, on any computer on any platform any browser, I have to go to the forum then press the login option at the top of the forum that kicks me to the main log in screen. There I am already logged in and I navigate back to the forum. Where if I spend about ten minutes typing in a response then I get logged out.

Well, there is trending hot and regular hot. You have both on that list. Trending hot would be like Teen Titans #12, Amazing Spider-man #795-current, etc. books that have sold out right away and currently may be grabbing decent coin on the market but have not given signs of being established. Then there is regular hot the majority of the other book on the list. Things like Tales of the New Teen Titans #44 isn't jumping up in price in leaps and bounds it is selling well and consistently at one price level with moderate rises and falls in value. NYX #3 certainly fits in this mold. If you have The Walking Dead #1 on the list (which isn't trending up dramatically either) then books like NYX #3 and X-23 #1 Dell'Otto should at least be considered. That's the problem with using the descriptor "hot" is it can either be general or specific if you don't define it up front. things like Batman #24 and Amazing Spider-man #795 I would consider hot. Books like NYX #3, New Mutants #98, Incredible Hulk #181, etc I would almost find another descriptor for because their price trending fluctuates and often without any specific outside influence like a movie or some sort of rumor. For example, NYX #3 was going up in price long before any movie rumor or appearance. Before any movie rumors were going the book was already grabbing $300+ slabbed 9.8 and up to $200 raw. Then with the rumor that she would be in the next movie it jumped to $500-600 and then up to $850-900 then back down below $800 and when I checked a few weeks ago back over to the $800-850+ range.

So perhaps thought needs to be put into a hot-list and what may now be a solid investment/strong seller list. Not all "hot" books end out holding or increasing in value over time afterall.

So What Pulled You Back Into Collecting?

In my 30 years of reading comics, the one thing that still keeps me going has been all the back issues from the 60s-90s. That's what I mostly collect these days. Just filling in issues I missed. I hardly get excited about the new stuff. Seems like it's written in these 5-6 issue arcs that are meant to be published as TPB in a year. Creative teams get replaced every few issues, and editors/writers have lost any respect for continuity.

Yes the arcs are generally about 5 issues long. that's what many people prefer. They will often set up the next or future story arcs but the five issue arc is done so that those many folks who do buy and read just the trades have a complete arc. Single one-off stories are pretty much a thing of the past and that is good for those of us who read trades because they often have left out these books in trades. Trades are a big deal now and you should hope to hell a books has trade saleability because that can keep a title around that might otherwise get the axe.

As for continuity, you couldn't be more wrong. however, it is more that they are paying too much attention to the overall continuity that sometimes a character continuity can suffer. With the number of events both companies run now writers on a title have to write with the overall continuity in mind and have to be able to have their character to drop into a cross-over event and back again. The problem is now there are either so many events or so little is delivered by the event that some individual titles can get disrupted. there is so much time spent on the upcoming event that it is tremendously hard for all the individual titles to build up a strong story and continuity. This is bad because one of the goal of a event is to try and sell people on the other titles in the company.

Changing creative teams is an inevitability now. The titles that tend to have the worst turnover are the second string titles like your Supergirls, Robins, Captain Marvel, etc. Books that have historically never been great at holding their market share. When that market share drops they change the teams or they use these titles as a building point for their new hires. You almost never see a big name artist or writer on such books or if they are noted for their work they will often shuffle them off to some crap like Batman or Iron Man. This is also a product of the way comics have been done for the last 20-30 years. Before their used to be a stable "bull-pen" of creators that would be assigned a title and they all got paid from a pool of cash. Now there are contracts and if you are prize writer artist you get the pick of the litter meaning likely the most popular books newbies and lesser paid folks get the "dregs" and if they prove themselves there they are shipped out. Unless the title is creator owned it is really rare that you get a creative team on a book for very long. 10 year runs like Dan Slott just finished on ASM are super duper rare and unless it is a popular creator owned title like the Walking Dead it just doesn't often happen any more.

They were not basing the film on the OLD mythos. They are basing this movie on the reboot of the video game. In that first game Laura is bot a seasoned adventurer. It was a cool game BTW. A much needed reboot.

Alicia Vikander was in the last Bourne movie and has won an Academy award.

BTW the cast is not mostly British wink

Types of Comic Book Collectors

Oxbladder
Oxbladder
Sped read the post and I would say I don't fit in any category. I collect what I want to collect and while value is a nice byproduct it isn't what decides what I want to buy. Well, beyond me not being able to afford a desired book that is. Oh maybe if I am going to be spending a lo9t on a book I might want it to be one that has a better chance of selling for a profit or at least for as much as it was purchased for in the first place, but to be perfectly honest I am not buying very expensive books. The last time I spent over $100 on a book I was buying it to flip and not for my collection. I am a modern comic fan, though I do enjoy book from all eras, and I spend most of my money on them so I really don't buy back issues that often and nowadays I primarily focus on back issues mostly between 1970 and now my want list of books prior to 1970 is mighty small and most I have to take care of current debt before I take a shot at buying copies of those books.

Comic Price Guide as "Go To" for Comic Sales

Facebook and selling through forums are also common and they do not require any underlying frameworks that need to be managed by the staff. When the observation of inattentiveness is made putting more on the plate is probably not what should be considered. Attend to the current offerings, cut out those that distract from the main business, and then add other features in that promote the service sold or enhance it. A system for selling stuff exists now but right now I think to get fixed and working the way people may like would draw too much attention away from the guide and other core services. Unless CPG is profiting in some way from the selling on the site it should be scrapped and worked in later if it is felt that administering such a service is feasible. the attention from a good selling platform can help the site but right now I think there enough other issue to deal with that it should be put aside for now.

I am wondering what everyones thoughts are on the grading through the site. I currently have a graded 7.0 Adventure Comics 283 which I see at other places and conventions for over 400.00 but on this site its valued incredibly low.

Just looking for thoughts as I am new to serious comic collecting but want to make sure whats right or not before using this guide as my go to.

Thanks in advance!

Prices can be out of whack. If you notice that you are mostly seeing higher realized prices than are listed here then just notify the staff by the means listed above.

It is important to remember that guides, any guide, is never going to be 100% accurate. It is just not possible. They are GUIDES not bibles.

What I was basically getting at is secure the core and getting working the way you wish/want then look at expanding from there. Building too quickly can be every bit as harmful if it is done too soon. Selling platforms are a tough thing to get and keep going. So many moving parts and dreaming go to for that means possibly neglecting the core system ... the system that is the bread and butter and core of the site. Now that attentiveness is there make sure that the core is clean and running well again and then tackle the dreams.

Then I must have even more time on my hands I am at about 5000 or so scanned. Some are on my website and another 3500+ on my computer waiting to be processed and uploaded. 11000+ to go.

And yet DC is rebooting a few titles and starting to deluge the collector with a whole flurry of #1s starting June. lol. In case nobody noticed they are also on a big diversity kick. The only difference is that Marvel was in your face and unrepentant DC just quietly follows suit.

This how comics at the big two are now folks. Either you like it or don't but don't think that DC and Marvel are any different ... and for cripes sake don't assume that because you don't like what they are doing that all modern books suck. Actually try reading some of the multitude of other offerings out there. (and not just Image and Dark Horse)

Collectors don't like change and every decade some don't like the changes they make but they have to do it or they risk fading away (which may happen anyway)

I wouldn't give it to any one company. Marvel and DC can do some creating, creators have more freedom at Image to do what they want as the title are creator controlled but even that doesn't mean that they are more creative because there are lots of similar offerings from them. As well, when you talk Image it isn't exactly a publisher that takes any and all creators. There is pretty much good and bad from all and it is going to be a very subjective choice anyway.

Some questions about grading

Oxbladder
Oxbladder
With tiers there are two criteria.

1) the year your book is from
2) the FMV or fair market value. This means how much is the book right now in the grade you think it is. So, if you think your NYX 3 is a 9.8 right now how much would you get for it? If that exceeds the maximum value of that tier then you have to figure out which tier it then fits in (hint: in the case of NYX 3 a 9.4-9.8 ungraded copy will push it out of the Modern Tier)

Pressing I don't know once you figure out the different tiers I am fairly sure that that would give you an idea of both the pricing for grading and what the pricing would be for pressing.

Submitting-wise you don't have to buy a membership you just have to submit through someone who has one. There are plenty of online places to go to. However, there are perks to buying a membership and only you can figure out if that is a benefit to you or not.

You also have to consider return shipping costs in your total.

So, ultimately, you do have to understand and be able to grade your own books so you can figure out costs. Keep in mind that if you underestimate the grade and it ends out assigned to different tier they will charge you the difference. So you want to figure out what grade the books are now and what you could reasonably expect grade-wise once the books are pressed. So, what defects do you think will be be eliminated by pressing and what will remain and what that means to the grade. Pressing and cleaning will NOT correct all defects.
