Slabbed Books

I was reading on the CBCS forum that they may not make such reslabbing claims any more. To answer your question more directly, in theory, no, there should be no risk of damage from "spent" microchamber paper. Like the buffered backing boards from Gerber the paper should be inert even when it's buffering capacity is done.

Now I don't know if there is any risk to books once the paper is spent and if you choose not to reholder the them. I do know that CBCS doesn't use microchamber paper at all so, if stored in a good environment, I doubt there is much worry from off-gassing. There could be problems if the environment is not ideal ... but that goes for books in any storage device.

Well until Tex started not posting regularly on the old forum noone would have been able to keep up with him. I was just lucky to be able to post and visit regularly. BTW if you thought my number were impressive you should have seen some of the post counts over at the CGC forums. Some of those guys were in the 20-50K post counts. That would have been huge in the point on the old CPG forum. You got something like two point for just posting a comment/response.

How do you sort your collection...

For physical ordering I have my collection sectioned off into DC, Marvel, and Other and then alphabetically within each section. I store everything in long boxes on a specially built triple deck shelf.

For cataloging I use Comic Collectorz. I don't worry about grading and pricing anything and at this point that would take a real long time, well the grading anyway. If I am selling anything then I grade it and check various sources for going prices and price it in that range.

I also have the mobile version of Collectorz (CLZ) which is great because you can log books in with it, make want lists, etc. No more carrying stupid paper lists around.

What to call those black streaks white covers get?

I would suggest asking such a question on the CGC or CBCS forums or Facebook pages. I do not know how those companies would address this defect or the colour abrasions books often get (from production or distribution shipping/handling). I personally would not grade a book above a 9.2 with such defects (and the 9.2 would only come if that was pretty much the only defect on the book). However, I have a very different view of production defects than the third party graders.

Thanks I was aware of that after I posted the line you quoted. I would like to point out though, just so people are clear, not all PETG and Mylar is archival. There are many different varieties. I may be splitting hair but if anyone did look up the functions of barex, mylar, or PETG they would quickly realize there are a lot of choices out there and not all of them are the right one wink

That actually may be from shipping/packing. It is not uncommon for light coloured covers to get ink transfer from the back cover of the book on top of it. For some reason the comic companies always want to put reall dark colour on the back of a white/light colour cover. The marks are just too random in their orientation. Usually if it was a printing error there would be only one or two track in a straight line.

Regardless to me that book would not grade out higher than 9.0. Providing that those marks are the only defect. But that's just me. Again you may wish to ask this on either the CGC or CBCS boards.

No problem! Nice to see a few other familiar faces around. (That's a cool cover. Too bad it got damaged by poor handling upset I really hate how companies have a white or light colour cover and them slap a dark back cover on the book. What do you expect from them though? they are just in it for the up front money. They aren't collectors.)

It is all about demand. Rarity and other factors can play a role but there are plenty of truly rare books out there (as in only one copy known to exist never mind MAYBE one 9.9 or 10.0 grade) that are not worth all that much relatively speaking. Why? Well it is because only a few people are interested in owning one. For example, New Adventure Comics #13 is the rarest DC book. Likely less than 10 copies, in total, exist. Yet you could likely own one for less than 20K. Or take a look at the price of Danger Trail #4, If the Devil Could Talk, the last 20 or so Comic Cavalcades, etc all hard to come by books yet the values are rather small. On the other hand I have a X-23 #1 Dell'Otto variant and I could probably get $1500 or more for it.

It also depends on if there was ever a staple. If it never got stapled the grade can be in VG range.

Wouldn't grade them higher than .5. Ads or not that is a serious defect.

To answer your questions yes enough light creases can drop the grade that much and no a bend does not have to crease the cover. As for seeing the bend while slabbed, that depends. Sometimes you can sometimes you can't.

You will have to grade on a book by book basis taking into account page colour and the smell but there are many other defects that you will also have to account for. I believe this site has a basic grading guide you can use.

Just so folks know, corners can really mean a lot to the grade. Sharp corners can really help a book especially in the 9's

They should but all the grading companies grade on a curve. There are many defects that are more common on older books that tend to not have as much weight attributed to them. For example, bindery corners on the thicker golden age books.

For the record, I don't believe in the practice but accept that it is an necessary evil. Printing has changed a lot over the years and now near perfect condition is common whereas in days gone by it was far different and perfect condition was sometimes not attained.

I just got one on my iPad. I just turned off JavaScript. I suspect it comes from one of those dummy member accounts that allows them to worm into the system. The last few incarnations of CPG was rife with spammers and such. Hopefully, this planned new site will finally have the security most other sites have been able to attain years ago.

A JavaScript free site. Java is handy but so freaking cludgey. Also a fairly secure site with no spammers or back doors into the system to allow hackers to infuse the site with redirects and pop-up ads.
