Ever see a mostly white cover that has longitudinal black streaks, like they're printed ON the cover? They don't come off so they're not some type of grime. They're not magic marker marks. They not color lift. They look like it came off the printing press that way. What's that specific defect called?

Do you have a photo of these black streaks? Are you referring to a UPC code?

Those marks are from the rollers in the printing process. Ink may get tracked onto one or the ink my not have dried and it will track onto the books. What to call them? Whatever you want but production error is probably a really basic and encompassing term.

Thanks Oxbladder. Now to figure out how they affect the grade...... Any ideas? Many printing defects don't hurt the grade much. Being produced with only 1 staple (has no staple holes for that area) has no real impact now. Printing Creases have to be really big before taking it below a 9.0. But THIS is something that's visually unappealing, unlike a crease or missing staple.

I would suggest asking such a question on the CGC or CBCS forums or Facebook pages. I do not know how those companies would address this defect or the colour abrasions books often get (from production or distribution shipping/handling). I personally would not grade a book above a 9.2 with such defects (and the 9.2 would only come if that was pretty much the only defect on the book). However, I have a very different view of production defects than the third party graders.

That actually may be from shipping/packing. It is not uncommon for light coloured covers to get ink transfer from the back cover of the book on top of it. For some reason the comic companies always want to put reall dark colour on the back of a white/light colour cover. The marks are just too random in their orientation. Usually if it was a printing error there would be only one or two track in a straight line.
Regardless to me that book would not grade out higher than 9.0. Providing that those marks are the only defect. But that's just me. Again you may wish to ask this on either the CGC or CBCS boards.

Thanks again Oxbladder. Good to see you're still around here (..... reminisces about the "old forums").

No problem! Nice to see a few other familiar faces around. (That's a cool cover. Too bad it got damaged by poor handling I really hate how companies have a white or light colour cover and them slap a dark back cover on the book. What do you expect from them though? they are just in it for the up front money. They aren't collectors.)
