X-Men #94 - Bought it for cover price and then saw the price rise to $60 a book in ads. It was the comic that taught me to handle them with more care.
Solar #10 (Valiant) - It was selling out everywhere the day it was released. Stores were buying it back for cover price within a few days because they had so many other customers wanting it. |

The first few seasons of Babylon 5 was the best, The rest are good, I have the Ultimate Collection (i had to get it from the UK) was hard to find for a time. Still getting through the set Lol. I did watch it back in the 90's. Would love to see it re-done today. Sadly some of those lead actors are lost to us now.
I watched the first episode and wasn't very impressed. By the time I watched it again a year later, I was hooked and it only got better. I still missed a lot of episodes because I don't watch a lot of TV.

Bought a full set of a bloke for around $25 some years ago. Left it sitting for a time & finally read it, It was good.
I think a dealer threw this in with some other purchase I made. I appreciate it for what it is, but I don't remember ever reading it. I liked Mister Miracle. I never cared at all for Kamandi.

A scanner scans reflective surfaces as black. I wanted a good image of what this comic looks like for my Continuity Comics checklist. This is a photograph with a tripod holding the camera aimed straight down.

Ahhh! Groot reprint.
Technically, he just asked where to post about real values in comics and got a somewhat defensive response back that didn't answer his question. I've got a comic that was priced something like $5 in a guide and one retailer sold a copy for $1200. That doesn't mean you might not get lucky and find a copy for $5, but anyone who actually knew what it was and wanted it would easily drop $100 or more for a copy.
I thunk 'discussion' of price spreads is a good thing whether it justifies a change in the guide or not.

I was actually rummaging through the Mystic series at the GCD and noticed that some comics like Tales of Suspense #1 was reprinted at least three times. Many issues were reprinted multiple times because when the company sold, the new owner just reused the old printing plates over and over.
I saw the Groot cover, but I can't remember or not if it had been reprinted multiple times by this publisher.

My suggestion is to tease people with an introduction about your collection without really saying anything. Build it up like its really awesome so that collectors start letting the greed in their mind get the best of them. Whip out some unimpressive list in a few days and leave people perplexed afterwards. That's my suggestion.

I'd honestly like to see the comic bag in person.I don't recall ever seeing a Mylar comic bag with rounded corners. If the COA is calling a polypropylene bag "Mylar" then they should be ashamed. It doesn't even make sense to have a radius on the corner of a comic bag because it could damage the square corners of the comic..

When to replace bags and boards

I can't remember the brand name for the bags and boards, mostly bought in the early 90's, but they did say "acid free" and were made for preserving comics, of course. That's why I was wondering...why won't they be good for a longer time....like 30 years, for example.
Everything is relative. I've seen B&W comics where the printing ink was acidic and yellowing the pages inside. Bags and board will not stop that. I've seen cloudy and yellowed mylites on comics I bagged with them in the early 80's.
Your retailer is right about changing bags and boards on most comics in 5 years if you are worried about some slight form of acidity. By "most", I mean that most comics were bagged in Polyethylene in the 70's and that transitioned to Polypropylene in the 80's & 90. Polypropylene is still the most common types of bags. Both of these materials start breaking down within 5 years and release acids. Is it going to destroy your book immediately? No. The comics will outlast me in those bags so I'm not horribly worried about the 5 year deadline for replacing them. Also, results will vary based upon temperature. If you store them in a hot room, the bags are the least of your concerns. If they are stored in a cool dark room, the life of them will be a little longer.
Mylites with acid free backing boards are the best way to protect the books. Mylar is an inert plastic suitable for archival storage. It is a band name and many collectors are too ignorant to know the difference between Polypropylene and Mylar. I've seen bag manufacturers use the name Mylar when their product is not Mylar. I'm even being told that Melinex (another archival plastic suitable for comics) is being substituted for Mylar.
If you buy Mylar from E. Gerber or Bill Cole, you are getting good stuff either way. Buy their backing boards too. The "acid-free" backing boards that most people use can become acidic over time also. Theirs should last longer.
Open the bags on your comics and take a whiff. If they smell acidic, I think you should swap them out. Personally, if I open a bag and the comic smells like it did when it came off the press in 1982, I'm not going to stress about swapping bags.

A small print run then is still significantly larger than what most popular titles get today. I suspect it had an average print run. I've seen plenty of these in the wild.
