FF 48-50 is quite a prize, in any grade. AND #1? Killing it...
Just a personal thing, but it bugs me how ugly the cover of #50 is, for such an important book. I hate that ditchwater brown background, just hate it.) |

I was kinda grumped out when I picked up last week's deliveries; the two SA Marvels were severely overgraded and I took no joy in them. This one brightened my mood, though; the book-long JP versus Nazis story was a lot funner than I expected.

And I love the film-noir feel of this Atlas cover; it's a title I never thought about before...

What are the five books in your collection that you're most proud of owning? Let's get some conversation happening here.
You start. |

Gris Grimly, huh? Never heard of him. I like what I see in duckduckgo, though; sorta reminds me of The Goon (and a couple other things). And I love The Goon. Can't even find any information on Dolls In The Attic, it's that rare.
BunnyMan? MadCap? I see a trend here...
I have those Avengers issues, I'll have to pull them out for a reread, maybe. (Yikes, I have a tonne of copper/modern Avengers. That might be a good hunk of fat I could trim from my collection. I'll have to think about that. One of these days.) |

Man, there are four LCS in town, and not one of them seemed to know what I was talking about when I said "50% of Overstreet." Them guys ain't no help at all... so I'm going to have to tighten my game up pretty fiercely. Where I'm at right is that I need to buy 5 books in the 200.00 range that I don't want, to finish up a submission to Heritage Auctions. More if possible, and that will help me hang on to a couple of books I was hoping to keep. That means no more SA Marvel filler and NO MORE IMPULSE BUYS for the time being. It's gonna take some discipline, and I may slip a time or two...
So this week's haul of... stuff... may be the last comics I show y'all for awhile; we'll see. Meanwhile, um, "whaddaya got? Whaddaya got? What are those on the table there?"
Dell ran a Tom Corbett series for 8 or 10 issues, based on a TV show, I guess, and those are about the most common, least desired GA sci-fi books that exist... but when they let go of the franchise, Prize Comics scooped it up and published a couple of issues. I didn't even know that till I saw one on ebay, and I was intrigued. Art by Mort Meskin, who reminds me of Kirby in some ways only he's boring, and the writing is pretty cluihed, stories that could be westerns if you swapped out the genre details. (To be fair, I've only read the first story so far; maybe the others kick it up a notch.)

And these fellas...

And finally, something underground-related; it doesn't sell for huge amounts, but it's said to be seriously hard to find. I've always liked Skip Williamson, he's one of the funniest guys around in the old UG scene.

Yeah, I guess it's my turn, especially since nobody else wants to play. I've been thinking about it, but I'm not even sure what books they would be. I think I've got two of them nailed down, I'll have to sit and think awhile. |

It took me this long to decide on a top five, but I finally put a list together.
Venus 10 Way, way back when I was like 14 I went to my first comic convention. I had been really really digging the Bill Everett reprints from Venus Comics that were turning up in Marvel's reprint horror books, and I remember -- oh, wow! -- one of the dealers had a Venus original on the wall behind him. I asked to see it, and he scowled at me and said "what for? You can't afford it." Forty years later, I finally bought one; I felt like I had gotten even.
True! Strange World Of Your Dreams 2 The fist Golden Age book I ever bought was an issue of Black Magic, V3#1, mostly drawn by Kirby... and inside, there was an ad for T!SWOYD #1. I thought that was just about the coolest premise for a comic-book I'd ever heard of,mn, and it was on my wish-list forever. Till I finally got one.
Airboy v7#3 Airboy's a pretty cool series, I enjoy reading it and I love the way Hillman Publishing did the coloring on their covers, sort of an airbrush effect. I don't usually like slabs, but best of census (8.5, for this one) is certainly something I can brag on.
Jingle Jangle 42 Nobody has ever drawn comics like what George Carlson did in Jingle Jangle. (Well, Krazy Kat is similar in some ways.) I love that series to death, and -- as above-- 'best of census' bragging rights. 9.2.
fifth place (tie) Powerhouse Pepper 4 -- because Wolverton's so cool, and this is the best piece of Wolverton I've got Batman 39 -- because 'what's a collection without some GA batstuff?' I'm scared to take it out and read it, but it displays well. edited by pmadreenter on 6/9/2025 edited by pmadreenter on 6/9/2025 edited by pmadreenter on 6/10/2025 |

Jingle Jangle is maybe an acquired taste... or maybe something where either you get it or you don't. If you look at the covers, sure, it seems like ordinary kid-stuff, but George Carlson's on a whole nother planet with The Pie-Faced Prince Of Pretzelburg. Not to be pushy, but here's a good example, Alla Bama And His Forty Fleas.

If you go to their website cgccomics.com, you should be able to find info about the cost of slabbing your books -- the price will vary according to the age and value of your books.
To decide whether it''s worth it on a monetary basis, the best thing to do is research your books one by one, comparing their raw value in the condition you have to the value of slabbed books in that condition. If a book is worth 15.00 raw and 30.00 graded, it's not worth doing. The easiest way to get that information is to look at completed sales on ebay; you can also get reliable information about the value of slabbed issues (but not raw ones) at gocollect.com , but they charge a subscription fee and the information you get as a free user won't be very useful.. |

Not every time. I addressed this in my first post. EDIT: But it sounds as though you've already done that work, so... my bad. edited by pmadreenter on 7/11/2025 |
