1. "Dolls In The Attic" by Gris Grimly. Great art, great story teller, and rare comic.
2. "Amazing Spider-Man" #302. Good story, great art, and the first and only (that I know of) appearance of "Bunny-Man"
https://www.comicspriceguide.com/titles/the-amazing-spider-man/302/xbyrh
3. "Spawn" #1 and "DarkHawk" #1. Tied since both these have a special place in my collection as I have owned both from the shelf since they came out and comics like these kept me not just collecting but reading and enjoying comics.
4. "Captain America" #309. MadCap origin story, had it as a kid. One of my 1st Marvel comics.
https://www.comicspriceguide.com/titles/captain-america/309B/pkwtlst
5. "Vampirella Strikes" #1 and "Vampirella Pin-Up Special" #1. Another tie as they have the same story; A young me went to a comic shop signing where they had a woman dressed as Vampirella. I bought both these and had them signed. She even gave a kiss mark on the COAs.
https://www.comicspriceguide.com/titles/vampirella-strikes/1/poxwkr
https://www.comicspriceguide.com/titles/vampirella-pin-up-special/1/pmxscw
Honorable mentions as I like the stories but wouldnt go as far to say "proud" to own them but def favorites.
"Batman: Brotherhood Of The Bat;" I just like the story. "Adventures Of Superman Annual" #6 continued into "Superboy Annual" #1; Cant miss 2 part Elseworlds story. Finally "Avengers" 334-338; The Brethren story. Great art and classic writing with a good beginning and ending without being too long or dragged out.

Gris Grimly, huh? Never heard of him. I like what I see in duckduckgo, though; sorta reminds me of The Goon (and a couple other things). And I love The Goon. Can't even find any information on Dolls In The Attic, it's that rare.
BunnyMan? MadCap? I see a trend here...
I have those Avengers issues, I'll have to pull them out for a reread, maybe. (Yikes, I have a tonne of copper/modern Avengers. That might be a good hunk of fat I could trim from my collection. I'll have to think about that. One of these days.)

Ive known Gris personally for years. Sometime in the 90's he did a few low print comics (not made by a major publisher) and I was hoping he would stick with it as I loved the art and his writing. I posted the cover of one here in the forum on 12Apr2025 labeled Treat. He went the way of original art and kids' books to the loss of the comic community. I have his permission to list his comics in the guide but since they are low print, less than 100, and he wasnt sure of some of the specifics not sure if will get done or even accepted being a privately made low print.
I read "ASM" #302 as a kid and for some reason the line "What am I supposed to do? Strap on a puffy tail and call myself Bunny-Man?" stuck with me and I always hoped "Bunny-Man" would re-appear. Honestly think he deserves a recurring role.
I was about 10 yrs old when I read the "Cpt America" with MadCap. I was a fan of origin stories and liked how MadCap wasnt a super hero or villain.
The Brethern story in "Avengers" was good because it was complete, I think maybe I need to re-read it. Only been a few decades, youd think I would remember. I did wonder if this group would re-appear as I thought their origin was original and made me think spoiler................as they were evolved from bacteria. Would be a great re-read with the great art and a wide spread of characters.

Righto was worried you were pushing ads. I looked at link and dont think itd be for me. I mostly like Gris' work because I know him and the art is beautiful, but honestly not my style. As far as the writing, I really did like Gris' story telling because I like the horror genre to read. I wont be adding John Kenn Mortensen to my read list as I dont think Id like the story (I do appreciate a fun read tho, Douglas Adams is a favorite) and I googled some images and dont think the art is any good. Not that I could do better, just comparably to art I like. I appreciate the suggestion, tho.

I will give most things a chance but can usually tell what I wont like right away. Im very picky w horror stuff, it needs to be kinda scary not just a gross-out. I usually stick w/ Sci-fi books and tv. Comics, Batman or Spider-Man as long as its not a bunch of multi-verse or variants on the character, like all the Bat-family mess, and definitely nothing with Robin. I always thought, even as a kid, it was ridiculous to have a child side-kick. One of my first fave comics though was "Night Force" Vol1, #9. Read #8-#9 if in the mood for some good horror.
Also with your recommendation, which was appreciated, it seemed it would be sport themed. I hate books and movies about sports. I cant even stand watching sports. Anytime someone asks me to play something though Im down. Solo sports, team sports doesnt matter as long as I am in. I prefer biking and sport shooting, but give me some foosball or pool Im happy. I'll watch others play sports the day I cant even throw a dart.
By the way you started post but didnt list your 5 proud comics??

Yeah, I guess it's my turn, especially since nobody else wants to play. I've been thinking about it, but I'm not even sure what books they would be. I think I've got two of them nailed down, I'll have to sit and think awhile.

I'll play. :-)
I have a soft spot for those #1 Image comics due to my age when I started collecting.. so while they are not worth much (anything) I still hold some of them dear. I'll just list a few of those, and branch out to the other companies to round it out. It's hard to lock this down to 5 for sure, but...
Spawn #1 (still collect this one) Shadow Hawk #1 (I always really liked the look of this guy) Maxx #1 (I have the complete run, and very much like them all) Batman #251 - Such a great cover. NYX #3 - 1st X-23 - I picked up this run when it came out, so it's one of those buys that worked out. I also like to collect key women characters, so this fits in to that theme.
Runners Up... because why not... Batman Beyond #1 (loved that show growing up) Batman #222 (a classic cover with my fav band) Edge of Spider-verse #2 - 1st Spider Gwen The Amazing Spider-Man #194 - 1st Black Cat Conan the Barbarian #23 - 1st Red Sonja

You took the words right out of my heart as far as Image #1's. I proudly own the first 45 issues of "Spawn" purchased as they were published but then fell out off collecting for years. I would buy the occasional "Spawn" over the years and have some of the recents. "Shadow Hawk" was underrated, I have multiple issues. "Maxx" was great, I loved the art but the story line jumped around too much and wasnt solid. I preferred "Pitt." "Cybernary" and "Cyber Force" were great. "Savage Dragon" was well written. "Gen 13" was great all around. Obviously all my opinion and think Image did great and its a shame these characters are not more popular. I'd rather see new issues of these than another new version of Spider-man and Batman or push out another Wolverine title.
I loved the Batman Beyond cartoon.
I had an "ASM" #194 but it was poor condition with a ripped cover and water stains. I sold it as I didnt see it in my permanent collection.

yeah, there was a bit of a feeling of 'throw it at the wall and see what sticks' when they first started, A lot of the 'team' books felt a bit derivative but some of them were solid titles. Maxx was by far the most experimental of the first runs and while very cool, I'd agree that it didn't always stick the landing. I keep hearing a movie is in the works, but the same could be said for Spawn. The animated Maxx and Spawn that came out of HBO back in the day were both quite good.

It took me this long to decide on a top five, but I finally put a list together.
Venus 10 Way, way back when I was like 14 I went to my first comic convention. I had been really really digging the Bill Everett reprints from Venus Comics that were turning up in Marvel's reprint horror books, and I remember -- oh, wow! -- one of the dealers had a Venus original on the wall behind him. I asked to see it, and he scowled at me and said "what for? You can't afford it." Forty years later, I finally bought one; I felt like I had gotten even.
True! Strange World Of Your Dreams 2 The fist Golden Age book I ever bought was an issue of Black Magic, V3#1, mostly drawn by Kirby... and inside, there was an ad for T!SWOYD #1. I thought that was just about the coolest premise for a comic-book I'd ever heard of,mn, and it was on my wish-list forever. Till I finally got one.
Airboy v7#3 Airboy's a pretty cool series, I enjoy reading it and I love the way Hillman Publishing did the coloring on their covers, sort of an airbrush effect. I don't usually like slabs, but best of census (8.5, for this one) is certainly something I can brag on.
Jingle Jangle 42 Nobody has ever drawn comics like what George Carlson did in Jingle Jangle. (Well, Krazy Kat is similar in some ways.) I love that series to death, and -- as above-- 'best of census' bragging rights. 9.2.
fifth place (tie) Powerhouse Pepper 4 -- because Wolverton's so cool, and this is the best piece of Wolverton I've got Batman 39 -- because 'what's a collection without some GA batstuff?' I'm scared to take it out and read it, but it displays well. edited by pmadreenter on 6/9/2025 edited by pmadreenter on 6/9/2025 edited by pmadreenter on 6/10/2025

I m going to check out some of those titles since I want to read more outside the main genre like Spider-man, Batman, X-Men, and check out some golden age. From the little looking I did Venus and Airboy look good and will give them a read. Jingle Jangle, from what I saw, reminds me of the old Richie Rich comics I grew up with. Good picks pmadreenter.

Jingle Jangle is maybe an acquired taste... or maybe something where either you get it or you don't. If you look at the covers, sure, it seems like ordinary kid-stuff, but George Carlson's on a whole nother planet with The Pie-Faced Prince Of Pretzelburg. Not to be pushy, but here's a good example, Alla Bama And His Forty Fleas.

Tough to decide favorites. Some I like for story, others for art, rarity, or a good memory attached.
