Alice Joyce "A.J." Maxfield was a medical research scientist who found herself sought out by both Spider-Man and Count Dracula. The hero needed her for a vaccine he believed could help treat his aunt, May Parker, while the vampire-lord wished to kill her and destroy her research so they would not someday threaten vaguely defined plans of his. Mistakenly believing A.J. Maxfield to be a man, Dracula slew an innocent at a costume party on board an ocean liner while Spider-Man dealt with a gang of criminals also looking for the doctor. Fortunately, Dr. Maxfield was a woman in a Valkyrie costume the count had briefly considered feeding upon earlier, and so was alive and well, and able to supply Spider-Man with the necessary medicine.
