Hi folks!
In the old forums we had a long running thread of comic book reviews. Sadly, I've yet to see the return of our ol' buddy Tex. So, I'm gonna start the new review thread myself and hope the rest of you jump in with your own book reviews.

Let's start off with a simple one that just came out. Daughters of the Dark Oracle - Orgy of the Vampires

I say simple, because it is.
Easy to follow basic killer vampire kills everyone story. NOT FOR KIDS!!
The 'story' is about a female vampire interrupted during the process of making another vamp by the mob of pitchfork and torch carrying villagers. They kill her lesser vampire slave and she goes on a rampage, killing everyone in the village.
Oh yeah, she's nude for the entire book. NOT FOR KIDS!!
The art is black and white, as well as pretty great (GRAPHIC!!). So, that's a plus...

The Good: It's the basic vampires are very bad news story. Not one of those vampires are sparkly, emotionally touchy feeling, type you would understand, if you took time to get to know them.

The Bad: Same as the good. The story serves no purpose but to have massive amounts of killing and nudity. But, if that's your thing, there is no bad.

Next up:
G.I.Joe -Deviations- by IDW

The skinny- IDW is going some one-shot "What if" type books.
Here Cobra has wiped the floor with the Joes and now rule the world. The world is now a model of efficiency, with the trains/planes and buses all on time, medical care, food problems dealt with, crime almost non-existent, war is a thing of the past and everyone is quite happy with life. Well...almost everyone.
Cobra Commander, has spent so much of his life in pursuit of the world, he doesn't know how to act now that he has it. He never had actually considered he would win and it's DRIVING HIM EVEN MORE CRAZY!
What to do, what to do?
The GOOD:
1) It's G.I.Joe!
2) It's a "what if" story that any Joe fan has had cross their minds. It answers the question of what happens if COBRA were actually competent about how they use one of those great high-tech devices. You know how you always say "I would have done this..." when you watched the cartoons? They DID THAT in this story!!
3) It doesn't take itself too serious, even during the serious parts. It's a fun read.

The BAD: I got nothin...oh wait! The ending left me SERIOUSLY wanting more. But, it's a one-shot upset

Time to get this ball-a-rollin' again ...Without Tex upset
Please anyone jump in & help out if you like.

Paper Girls #13 (Image) Lots of strange goings on with this issue. Artwork is still good & it has been a fantastic read so far.
The hockey stick is still in play i see ...what, I thought that was funny!!
Kaje touches a very odd looking upside down pyramid & kinda sees her future, It was so traumatic that see says don't F#@!%&! touch it.

We Stand on Guard TPB (Image) Reprints the 6 issue mini series from 2015 seems so long ago now.
Great series get it if you haven't read it or find the floppies as it is a stellar read.

Rock Candy Mountain #1 (Image) Brilliant read, Fun, vulgar & full of trains & hobos. Get it.
Best line: "Old Jackson just flapping his pecker in the wind trying to F#@% a cloud".
Oh did i mention that the Devil is looking for Jackson...Hmm!

Black Cloud #1 (Image) A hit in the making, Was deep meaningful read. Had me thinking of that Star Trek episode where Professor Moriarty gains AI & leaves the ship. This books is the same but in a dream state. Great artwork & direction.
Best line: "People so committed to their stories they chose to LIVE them".

Rogue One #1 (Marvel) Was a good adaptation of the movie. I got the Droids Variant.

Lastly, Waking Dead #166 (Image) Not saying to much. Someone dies, Rick is forced to be the leader & the dead walk ..What more is there to say!!! smile

I have one that's a "BAD AND UGLY". No good about it.
This is the ONLY comics I have ever read that got rid of. I gave it back to the comic shop. I told them to put it in the back. This post is actually a warning to people to not buy this comic.

FULL SPOILERS AHEAD !!!!! I'm giving away the whole story here! If you're fine being utterly disgusted by something, continue reading.

Bizarre Hands #1 from Avatar Press.

Here's the story: A man, Preacher Judd, travels around doing "The Lord's work" trying to "Save" mentally challenged young girls.
And every Halloween he finds one and takes her trick or treating... just like he did with his own mentally challenged sister when he was a teenager.
However, once he takes these girls out alone, he rapes them while strangling them to death with his "bizarre hands"… just like
he did with his own mentally challenged sister when he was a teenager!
It's graphic, showing him raping his sister with nudity and violence.

*******

SPOILER DONE.

Seriously... now you see why I got rid of this book. I don't want it in my house. It wasn't that it dealt with a horrifying subject in a decent way - it was just for cheap shock. I'm not disgusted by many things, having watched a ton of horror movies and reading everything Stephen King has written - but this was something I wish I had never read. I want to blot it out from my memory.

How young is the girl? If she's underage, the consumers, retailers, & publisher could be in violation of US Federal child pornography laws by even owning it. The laws cover even illustrations of underage people. Smart thing to get rid of the trash. It sounds like a waste of paper.

I don't remember if their ages are explicitly stated, but when it flashed back to him living at home and having to take his sister trick-or-treating, I guess it's assumed at least HE is a teen living at home. The sister and the girls are not drawn as "young" children, like 10 y/o... more like older teens. So maybe that's how they got around legal issues.
Still a disgusting book. Not "horror" to me.

Sounds like what most supposed horror pictures are like now. Movies like Saw are not horror the are murder porn.

If the wrong person saw the stuff, they could bring up charges and say it's implied.

Yeah. I liked a couple of indy female comic characters in the 90's and Avatar negotiated to publish the characters and turned them into porn. I avoid their stuff entirely.

I've read some of their Night Of The Living Dead, and an UBER. They weren't like that one was.

Sure they have better books but still wouldn't support them. I just don't think I would miss much by them by doing so and so many fun, interesting books by other small publishers out there.
Mind you, I have no halo above my head by saying the above, I will say I have and do buy every now and then a CAVEWOMEN issue and at times will buy the nude cover variant by Budd also. That is the only comic adult product I buy.

I really liked Cavewoman's 1st self-published series and the second Cavewoman:Rain series published by Caliber.
Budd would do topless sketches for people at cons and it was cute. Avatar published an issue and it ruined the whole flavor of what Budd had created. I lost all interest in the character. Except for a few issues to evaluate the aftermath and a convention sketchbook, I've never bought anything by him since.

I've got some early art by him and it's the most viewed stuff I have at comicartfans.com

Original color art over a photocopy of the inked art. The photocopy art is cut and pasted over the blue gradient background.
This was the cover art to a 2nd printing on the Cavewoman:Rain series. This is my most viewed art piece.

Cavewoman: Rain #1 Page 9 (her 1st appearance in the 2nd series)

Cavewoman:Rain #2 Splash Page (Budd told me he spent more time on this page than he spent on the whole rest of the book)

Cavewoman #2 Splash Page (Original series)

I have 4 or five more pages of his original art and I have the greytone watercolor art used to publish an entire issue from the Cavewoman:Rain series.

I thought those series were fun and Avatar ruined the character for me.
