Water damage

How does water damage affect grading. I know grading guides mention mildew that places a comic into the Poor grade. But I have some books that have no mildew. The only problem is water damage. Some of the books have significant damage, and I'd think they would then fit in the Poor grade. But I have others that have a small spot of damage, like in the very bottom right corner. Anyone know how to consider it in grading or know where I can find it mentioned in a grading guide? |

Books right off the shelves

My opinion is that reading it once or twice won't/shouldn't affect the grade at all. So long as it's carefully handled. It isn't like a new car that loses it's value just for driving it off the lot. Most comics on the shelf are 9 and above. It all depends on how much or how significant the defects are. Grading is just so subjective. But all grading guides allow for some problems that still maintain high grade values. I don't think 10's exist because that grade is just an ideal, not a real value. My opinion is that alot of comics right off the shelf are 9.8, and stay that way if read carefully, stored carefully, and kept out of the sun and humidity. edited by erichey on 3/9/2016 edited by erichey on 3/9/2016 |

Grading: Your opinion?
erichey
|
Subjective. Okay, got that out of the way. My opinion is too many newer/younger collectors think NM means perfection. Absolutely not true. And it leads to snobbery. Bad for collecting. (Not saying you are.) I've always seen 10.0 as an ideal, not a real grade. 9.8 is as perfect a copy as is possible that an average person can get from a brick and mortar store, that's handled with great care (even if read a couple of times), and there aren't any printing errors/defects. Now, as far as what I can see in the photos on eBay, I see that the spine corners have light wear, and there is some light stress on the spine. If that is all there is, this comic is Near Mint without question. Were it lands in that grade, I wouldn't guess without seeing the book. That's my two cents, for what it's worth. |

Cover artist question
erichey
|
The cover for Thor issue 445 has an interesting artist signature. And I'm really not sure who all are considered to be the contributing artists to the cover. It reads: "Ron (after Sal) & Milgrom". Okay, so Ron is Ron Frenz, and Milgrom is Al Milgrom. I'm assuming the Sal is Sal Buscema. Marvel's website doesn't have any info on the creators of this issue. And the Marvel Wiki doesn't list him as a cover artist. You know what the question is. Is Sal Buscema a cover artist for this issue? edited by erichey on 3/10/2016
Okay, I see now how having a Poll for this doesn't work. Wish I could remove it. (hangs head in embarrassment)

Please correct the Letterer credit. It incorrectly lists Steve Buccellato. He was the colorist. |

I've been grading for 25 years. Got my start grading for a local used bookstore. So, yeah, I know about the subjective nature of it. I've just never run across any guides or talked with anyone about water damage. There are different types of damage from moisture. From small stains to warped pages. I thought this would be a good forum for discussion. I wanted to know what the community thinks. And, hopefully, someone may know how a professional grading company handles it. |

There are two different entries to choose from for colorist Jason Aburtov. One is Aburtov, Jason. The other is Aburtov, J. They are both the same. Could you merge the two so there is only one to choose from? Thanks. |

Cover artist monogram "Kudzu"

Aquaman Vol 5 issue 19 has a monogram on the cover that looks like "Kudzu" with a gear underneath and a plant vine inside the gear. The DC wiki for this issue says Dave Johnson is the cover artist, but the example of his signature does not match what is on the cover. Does anyone know who this signature belongs to? |

The covers shown for the regular and variant A are incorrect, and the variant A fact is incorrect. The image shown for the regular cover is actually the variant A. The two photos need to be switched. Also, the fact notation for variant A is not correct. Patrick Gleason did not do the variant cover. The same three artists did both covers. They are Tyler Kirkham, Matt Banning, and Nei Ruffino. |

Need help on identifying signature

I looked at some of Billy Tucci's original artwork/sketches that he has signed (not monogramed). Here is the link: http://www.crusade-fan.com/original_art/original_art.html The signature on the comic you have looks like it could be his. Some of the signatures on the artwork shown on the website are similar.
Hope this helps. |

The trash button for removing an entry in the credits does not work. I've made a couple of errors, and would like to fix them before someone else verifies it. |

Second Opinion on Grade for this book

I would probably start around a 3.0, and go from there. Have the staples been replaced? Looks like chipping, or pieces missing along edges and corners. Some creases. Rolled spine. Foxing. Has there been any restoration? The colors look a little off in some areas. Maybe it's just the scan. |

Hi Erichey,
As far as I know, there is no restoration and the staples are original. The person who sold it to me listed it as a 3.0 which struck me as a tad conservative, not that I am complaining.
We don't see a ton of Golden Age books for sale around here much less rare ones like this. .

Just looking at the scans, that would be a safe bet. If I had it in my hands to get a better overall look at the book, I may go a higher number. I'm curious now. What grade is the book for you? |

I graded it at a 3.5 so there wasn't much of a difference. On the other hand, a friend of mine put it at a 4.0 but with the foxing, I wouldn't take it that high. I might see if I can get it pressed though but that won't happen for a while.
In the scans, the foxing doesn't appear to be too much. Much higher grades allow for some foxing. |

Yep! They are now a part of history & history does not look good with some sig. across it But like i said before, Bottom inside page somewhere is just fine.
I've only had a couple books signed (by McFarland). In the future, I've thought that I would ask to have the signatures on the inside front page. But I wasn't sure if that is common, uncommon, or acceptable. Like when you get a book signed by the author, they do it on the inside, not cover. I don't want comics signed on the cover because it interferes with the enjoyment of the artwork.
No one would ever ask DeVinci to sign his name across the Mona Lisa with a gold ink pen. |
