Halloween starring Jamie Lee Curtis 2018

This is definitely a movie that should never have been made. It is like the people behind it decided they needed to move Halloween into the 21st century. In fact, near the beginning of the movie they have people discussing how compared to today's killings, Michael Myers having only killed five, pales in comparison. And as if to make that up it seems like everything is sped up. The first obvious speed up is the soundtrack, especially the well-known Halloween theme song. Then it's as if they wanted to try to get a character in for every possible person that could show up in their audience. There are gay people, a lot more black people, and a lot more whatever people. The upshot is they have very little time to spend on anybody and when you finally see the ending credits you realize just how many people they piled into this film that they had no time to spend with, or for the audience to get to know. But it does not seem to matter to the powers that be because they are trying to make up for Michael Myers slim tally of deaths as in this movie he just goes on a killing spree and tries to bring his killings into the modern era. Hardly any time is spent on any character, even the major characters and you just do not care. A movie to avoid. Find a DVD or VHS of the first Halloween.

Spider Gwen returns as the Ghost Spider next week and they are restarting her over at number 1, and my understanding is all the variants are sold out already. The ones that the comic stores order through Diamond.

Bohemian Rhapsody directed by Bryan Singer

Bryan Singer, who directed the first two X-Men movies, directs the story of Freddie Mercury and the band Queen. This is a very good movie and somewhat low-key at the beginning, because after all they were small time at the beginning of their careers. The film focuses mainly on Freddie Mercury, with a strong emphasis of the unity of the band members. Family seems to be emphasized a lot in this movie. That is what Freddie Mercury starts out with but loses as he gradually gaines fame and an ego. The sound and the music are fantastic. I had forgotten how good the band was and this movie will serve to reemphasize their place in Rock and Roll history.

Well, obviously the music is a very strong point. And the film takes the time to show how they created different sounds with a cheap budget. And how some of the songs were created and why. One bad point is you may find yourself humming some of the Queen songs days after the viewing especially "We Will Rock You."

Alamo City Comic Con

I thought this Con might have problems when I did not even find out about it till Wednesday. I had seen no cards or posters anywhere at any of the comic shops in Austin, Texas which is 75 miles away from San Antonio. Now I saw where Sean McKeever arrived and there was no guest pass for him, no place for him to put his books and he had no idea if there was a hotel for him. Whoever is running this Con is running it into the ground. This Con seems to have a heavy emphasis on celebrities more than comic book artists, so maybe that is the problem too.

Is that counting the variants that individual stores had made for the recent anniversary that feature the store on the front cover?

Can You Ever Forgive Me? starring Melissa McCarthy

This movie is a great movie, but it will be neglected as it is mainly a biopic of an unknown con artist, writer, from the 90's who never made it super big. Melissa McCarthy and her husband team up once again, not to make another sorry comedy, but amazingly a very good, serious movie. The only reason I went to this movie knowing that McCarthy and her husband were teaming up again was that this was not a comedy and I was justly rewarded.
McCarthy plays a writer of nonfiction biographies, Lee Israel, who has hit a dry patch in her career and nobody is interested in her anymore. Accidentally she comes upon the idea of forging old letters and memorabilia from dead people that she is able to research ably because of her background as a writer of biographies. Israel is portrayed as a very sorry individual who treats people badly because people treat her badly. She has absolutely no remorse about ripping off the literary community. Even the film's title, "Can you ever forgive me?, ripped off from a Dorothy Parker quotation shows Israel's indifference at what she has done when she uses it in the movie.

This movie is a total mess. This movie has so many convoluted plots going through it you will lose yourself in it and the movie does not have to worry about solving most of them because there will be a follow-up. So you are left at the end very dissatisfied. And some of the British accents are hard to understand when they are spoken in a low voice. Johnny Depp is surprisingly very good and has a commanding presence. And that's it for all the positive stuff in this movie.

Stan had the personality. And yes, he had the talent too. But I would say it was mainly his personality. It was able to come through on the pages of a comic book, a comic book conventions and television interviews. Kirby was more reserved. And as for for Ditko....

Been reading where Venom has now surpassed Wonder Woman in box office totals as it now has a profit of over 822 million worldwide. Disney is not happy as now they will have to deal with an 800 pound gorilla.

Image Plus, the magazine

Recently I was watching some market activity on Dead Rabbit, a comic book that has been recalled by Image Comics. This was due to there being a bar in New York called Dead Rabbit that actually prints up comics on their menu and has trademarked the name. So naturally people are holding on to their copies of Dead Rabbit and the books are going up a little bit in value. Issues number one and two had already been put on sale by time the recall was issued. As first appearances are everything, it was pointed out that Image Plus had already done a preview of Dead Rabbit in their August - October issue. I think this even included a 5-page page preview of the comic. This would be Dead Rabbit's first appearance, technically. And so would probably damper a huge price increase on the recalled issues. Image Comics usually does preview almost all there upcoming issues in this magazine. So, anybody buying an Image comic hoping it would go up in value would have to realize that its first appearance was probably in this magazine. If The Walking Dead had appeared after this magazine had started publication would the first issues of Walking Dead be as valuable today as they are? I just wanted to point this out as most people are probably forgetting about the Image Plus magazine when buying their comics for future value.

I noticed that the first comic book appearance of the Defenders dropped tremendously here on the comic book price guide. That is also probably due to the collapse of the Marvel Netflix series deals as it was talked up as a possible future feature.

This 50 year sequel just does not make it. The backbone of the original film were the songs that you could not help but hum to and could not get out of your head. There are no songs in this movie that are like that. The songs are weak and an embarrassment to songwriting. Also, this movie has a dark tone which I find very unusual for a Disney movie and a sequel to the original Mary Poppins. The actors are good in their roles and Emily Blunt makes a suitable replacement for Julie Andrews. In another observation, Disney is still bent on rewriting black history. I have noticed in a few films that I have seen by Disney lately that black people seem to have a more prominent role than history had given them at that time period. Shades of the novel 1984 or was it Brave New World where history is constantly being rewritten.

This week I heard some more incompetence at the Alamo City Comic Con. There was some premium package with Jim Lee which included a lithograph that never appeared. The Alamo City people thought Jim Lee would bring it with him and Jim Lee said that was not what it was supposed to be. Anyway supposedly a lot of people that had charged the event with their charge cards we're able to get their money back through the card company. I heard this from a comic shop owner.

The reason we have a review of Mary Poppins is it is more of a warning not to see it review, as opposed to an Aquaman movie review when most people would see it anyways. And of course it is a pretty good movie, but I would probably just give it a B. I actually thought that Nicole Kidman seemed out of her depth in a superhero movie where as normally she makes some off-the-wall movies and is excellent. The costumes in Aquaman have a sort of Asian influence and that might explain part of why it is so big in China. Anyway I just read where it has surpassed even Venom now in profits. And still rolling.

I see by this sites recent value changes that the first appearance of the Immortal Hulk in Avengers 684 is gaining in value. I remember picking up that issue of The Avengers because the cover looks so cool. And I have been buying the Immortal Hulk, though not reading it, based on all the internet talk about how good the stories are. Now I need to either gather those ccomics together or wait for the trade paperback or hardcover.

I just came across Cud # 6 in my comic collection by Terry LaBan. Published in 1984 by Fantagraphic books, this is a great underground comic book. Way past the heyday of Undergrounds. I highly recommend Terry Laban's work though he does not do much lately, like the last 20 years.
