Organizing with Boxes

When you get a bunch of comics (not bragging here, just a fellow addict - er, I mean collector). I find the boxes very useful to keep track of what I have and finding an issues.
I often put new comics in and "unsorted" or "new comics" virtual box and physical box. (Or they will appear in "unorganized" listing in Boxes).
When I get a change I put them in alphabetical order, so I physically and virtually move them from the "new comics" box (unorganized) to regular boxes. This helps me find them later.
I buy and sell comics - so occasional I print out the virtual box list in CPG and compare it to physical comics. Helps me keep track of what I have.
It is a feature - you can use it or not as you decide. I like it; but I am the type of person who likes to be organized. |

NEED HELP WITH COMICS
kds_comics

Just happened to be online.
First - let me say those are seriously cool comics. Since you have two you should immediately send one to me (kidding!)
Second - On CPG often "less is more" in "Search Price Guide" These comics are listed here http://comicspriceguide.com/titles/rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer/yls
The trick is to search "Rudolph" - no punctuation, no commas, no apostrophes, no dashes etc. This "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is a little tricky as apparently is came out only once a year. Also since red-nosed is hyphenated this makes it more tricky. (no dashes - remember?)
It appears on your 1952 issue came out only with a red nose. Rudolph with a back nose? Really? Back in the day folks often "helped" the comic color artist by adding they own signature style - if you know what I mean. Check for ink or pencil on cover with the black nose. YOu may have to look on the interior of the cover for evidence it was colored.
Hope this helps. KDS |

Bag & Board Size for Gladstone Comics
kds_comics

It is really not so difficult to find out this information. A quick web search brings up http://www.wikihow.com/Size-Your-Comic-Books-for-Proper-Storage
I would suggest you just make sure the comic fits loosely in the bag. (not too loosely, but slips in easily) The bag does shrink slightly over time - if the comic is too snug you may degrade the comic.
Hope this helps. KDS |

See CBR link. There were hundreds of thousands of Marvel comics with no UPC label. No extra value - no loss of value either. Oh well.

Admins must be busy this week.
Try this link. From picture, looks like the Gatefold version of X-Men #1 from 1991. A very common book.
http://comicspriceguide.com/collection/marvel/x-men/1/pnrw
Check that there were several cover pictures for same comic. http://comicspriceguide.com/collection/marvel/x-men/1/pnrw#_variantTab
If this does not help, I am sure admins will pic this up. |

Whitman Publishing 3 comic pack?? Any info??

knparzival wrote:
The whitman 3 packs of interest tend to be from the early 80s. There where a few months in which some whitman comics were believed to have only been published in 3 packs making them much scarcer. They had a huge spike in value around a decade ago. After that I believe more of them started to hit ebay and the market so Ibelieve they are not as rare as originally thought. They have value, the demand is slightly higher then the more common books but I think the overall interest is not very high
http://www.dougcomicworld.com/INVENTORY-WhitmanComicsSite.html
knparzival is absolutly correct. I have ran into them. They were sold in low end drug stores like Woolworths or McCrory and some department stores. (Think "Dollar General"). Other companies also put together three packs and five packs in the 1980's. Issue can be condition. Also they usually bag stuff that did not sell in comic stores and sold at a discount. Could be some good stuff, but also a lot of minimal value comics. Depends on what is in there. I have seen them at flea markets and the like. I have seldom seen them take care of well. If they were bought by collector he would have opened the pack and bag and boarded them- as noted above that the pack was common.
Check eBay - many common comics like Walt Disney, Bugs Bunny and Chip 'n Dale are in these packs. This stuff is worth $1 to $3 each depending on condition. I saw $9.99 for a three pack. Are these people kidding?
In my opinion - Only the comics have value. The Whitman three pack itself is worthless. Apparently there are a few that have value - so everyone thinks theirs has value. Check it out first! Just my opinion.

Hi, I'm new here. One question
kds_comics
|
As you can see from CPG per the link below this is a $4 comic (assuming top condition)
http://comicspriceguide.com/collection/dc/wonder-woman/31/tiwqi
So the comic itself common. Double covers are an oddity and do add some value. Personally I'd put it at $5 value. Not a big bump, but definitely unusual. Some collectors like odd stuff and may pay a little more for it. (Not a lot more, a little more).
If you really run into unusual issues, you should check this website http://www.recalledcomics.com/
This will tell you if it is really a rare error and provide an idea of value. Few of these are on CPG - just because there are how many comics catalogues here? Close to a million. Too many to cope with a few dozen oddities.
Good luck with that one - this is just my opinion on value. Others welcome to comment. Sorry - not going to put you through college on that one!

Need some help guessing the grade of this comic!
kds_comics

From the pictures, looks like you were in the ballpark with 6.0 grade to me. A missing page is not always obvious - inside may have torn or missing page that can be overlooked. Encourage you to check this as a seller. Especially on comic this expensive.
I did recently pick up a "Challengers of the Unknown" 12 cent comic from 1960's Looked like about a 3.0 grade, (the price was right!) It is missing the center page (four pages of comics). My opinion is that this kills the value from $3 or so to $0.50.
I'd ask seller to get a second (or third?) grader - perhaps from a small, independent comic book store. Identify what the defect is exactly as you can.
Unless you can verify that the comic was complete when you sent it, I think the buyer has a valid concern. If a page is missing, this is a big deal. Suggest you offer a rebate on this one or on future order.
Just my opinion.

If you have your comic in "boxes", and view the box list, this will tell you guide value and what you paid for it side by side. Agree this would be great to export.

Which grading company to use?

You are free to choose whichever company you choose. However, I personally would stick with CBCS or CGC they are the most reputable and will give you the best returns should you wish to sell your books. While none of the companies follow a model that I would call "true" quality assurance CGC and CBCS are the closest to such models. None of the others come close and are either too expensive or too crappy.
I will not touch a book graded by PGX, Vault or any other company. I also will not touch any CGC book graded after they changed their case/encapsulation.
I use CBCS for a variety of reasons that most would not understand so just suffice it to say they follow a model that I can trust the most. They also have a great case and their service is top notch. If CBCS was not there and I was to use any other company it would be CGC. CGC still provides the best resale value in some cases, apparently.
I agree with Ox. CGC has been around longer, but former CGC president started CBCS. Either seem well respected. |

How do you sort your collection...

Jtolar wrote:
I have recently purchased an inherited collection of about 300-400 comics for $60. I generally have my collection sorted alphabetically except for Green Arrow / black canary series (my favs) which are stored together sorted alphabetically, volume, issue.
Now with this new collection I added 3 new boxes that hasn't been sorted yet but realized that I can't keep adding to the collection and sorting it the way I have without moving issues to new boxes.
Question is how do you sort you growing collection while maintaining order and being able to find things when you want it?
Other than CPG, do you have another program you use? Do you label boxes or use dividers?
Sorry I do not use a program other than perhaps a word processor and regular paper to mark boxes. I like something removable.
I use CPG "Box" feature to keep track of what I put in boxes.
You can put your comics in any order you like. Big Retail stores usually separate DC, Marvel, Silver/Bronze Age and Everything else. I separate Silver/Bronze and Kids comics - everything else is Alphabetical.

I can confirm.
DC did a "Tryout" series with various characters / writers / artists in mid to late 1970's. It was called "1ST Issue Special" Another version of why this series came to be is provided here on Wikipedia. True or not? Since Carmine past away recently we may never know.
"Writer Gerry Conway explained the series' origin: "1st Issue Special was a peculiar book concept based on [publisher] Carmine Infantino’s observation that first issues of titles often sold better than subsequent issues. Carmine’s brainstorm: a monthly series of nothing but first issues. It sounds like a joke, but he was dead serious." "

Where is the best place to sell comics
kds_comics
|
People have asked me about buying their collections, and I have sold a large collection viqa eBay many years ago.
It is very hard to get someone to commit to a large sum of money by mail, having never seen comics. If you are in a larger city direct garage sale to public is cheapest.
Next best is to sell at a small local show.
Next best is local auction / estate sale.
Selling online on CPG, eBay or other sites works, but takes a lot of time. You need time and patience. Fellow collectors are usually not in a hurry.
If you sell to a store, they will pay you decent money of you have comic worth $500 or more. They pay more like $ .10 on the dollar for comics worth $10 or less.
They need to factor in how long it will take then to sort, organize and sell (time and labor and overhead). Unless you have hot issues of vintage comics, dealers can't offer much. Same with those "nationwide" travel guys that say they will give you cash.
I will give you cash too, but I don't think you will like the number.
Dealers (and myself) make money on risk/reward.
Suggest you pursue local options first.
