Hey Crowman,
I'm not sure how you've been putting in your requests, but I think it's been through the forums. What you should do is use the "Report Missing Variant" function found in the listings for individual books.
  • Navigate to the specific book that is missing a variant.
  • Select the 'Variants' tab found next to 'Values'.
  • You should see a red box titled "! Report Missing Variants". For me this displays on the right side below any listed variants.
  • Clicking the box will bring up a page where you can enter information specific to the variant you are reporting. This includes what its called, price, artist, publication date, etc. To me the valuable part is being able to upload an image of the cover. This makes it much faster for the admins to process the request.

Yes, this is a much different process than reporting completely missing issues or titles. That is still done through the Missing Issues forum which is what I think you've been using for missing variants. Any time I've reported missing variants through the variant system the books have been added quickly, usually within a few days.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thank you for the above information.

It's based on how much gourmet coffee and chocolates you send them. The CPG admins are like hamsters and they need all the energy they can get to keep their hamster wheels moving.

In fact, before the the site redesign, the community stats at the top of the home page included coffee consumption.

The listing for Star Wars Adventures #1-CONEX shows an incorrect cover description/artist in the issue description.
It reads IDW Exclusive Elsa Charretier & Tamra Bonvillain Variant Cover (RE).
This cover is actually the Fan Expo Convention Exclusive cover by Tim Levins.
Alternate versions of this cover were used again for variants of issue #2.

HARDLEE THINN?

solarno
solarno
A quick search at another database shows Hardlee Thinn as a one shot with many variant covers. Another reseller mentions that many of the covers had super low print runs of 25 units or less. The publisher is Counterpoint Entertainment, which seems to have 1-2 dozen titles of mostly one-shots printed over the past 6 years. CPG does have three of those listed. The most likely reason for this title not being here is that it's a small run one-shot from a very small independent publisher that does little marketing beyond their Facebook following. These are the types of books that CPG typically relies on the users to make them aware of and that is probably why they have even the three titles they do.

If you would like you can submit a request to add this title to the CPG Megacomputer following the format found here:
https://comicspriceguide.com/forum/topic8-guidelines--please-read-before-posting.aspx

Providing as much info as you can will help with the process as it can be hard to find title data online for many small publishers. Scans of covers are super helpful.

An Example Request
Please supply the following information when asking for comics to be added

Title: Uncanny Space Cowboys
Missing Issues: All
Country: USA
Publisher: Cowboy Books
Publication Years: 2002-Current
Cover Price: $2.25
Variant Cover of #1 (Cover A was by Peter Murfin, B was by Alex Ross)
These books can be seen at the publishers Web Site at (website here)

Thanks for the update but I guess I am not seeing it or just looking in the wrong place. I see the "report a missing issue" but I don't see a "report a missing variant" anywhere. When I click on the missing issue it even says there to click the missing variant just like you are describing but I don't see it.

When I look at the variant tab for Venom #7 this is what I see. The report missing variants button is towards the bottom of the page below all of the variants.

That's a really nice page on grading. It seems that a llot of sites will have grading criteria but inly in text form. Comics are a visual medium so any grading resource should include pictures to show examples of what is and is not acceptable for a given grade. Thanks for the link KDS.

I just watched the pilot episode and I was fairly impressed. I thought the casting was well done and the show writing keeps the edge that makes Rick Remender's writing so much fun to read.
It looks like over the past two weeks raw high grade #1s are selling for between $10-$30 on that 4-letter auction site. Slabbed 9.8 copies seem to be selling for north of $100 but those are all 'best offer accepted' so I can't see the final selling price.

The logout bug strikes again. That last post was me!

Ron,
I know there has been some debate in the past as to what a typical right-off-the-shelf new book should be graded at just because the book has now been handled by multiple people. Even though 9.4 seems a reasonable grade for the majority of new books I pick up at my LCS, has there been any thought to lowering the default grade assigned to books added to one's collection down to a 9.2 or 9.0.

Biddle,
For me personally, the grade and resulting value are of secondary importance. For books in my collection that I've personally bought brand new off the shelf I'll just leave it at the default. That is unless it has an obvious defect (corner blunting, creasing, the very rare cut, etc.) when I buy it. Sometimes you just can't find a really good copy on the rack, or I wasn't paying attention. When the time comes that I plan on selling one then I'll look at assigning it a "proper" grade if warranted. In the rare occasions that I buy older books I will assign a grade when I add them to my collection because they have obvious defects or I just don't know how often they've been handled.

Cheers!

Inspired, Homage, or Stolen?

Like many on CPG, lately I've been enamored with the cover art of Francesco Mattina. Heck, Ron recently did two blog posts with check lists of his current work. Today I read this week old story on Bleeding Cool about his supposed straight-up stealing of other artists work to create his own.

Some of the examples shown are dubious. Others are pretty damning. While I think there is no denying that Mattina's finished works are beautiful and striking in their own right regardless of origin, these claims do somewhat dampen my excitement about his art. As a musician I am constantly looking to other musicians for inspiration, because frankly, original ideas don't always flow freely. When I release new music I like to give credit for that inspiration when I consciously know its there. If I am so inspired that I basically copy a song and make my own cover version I need to go a step further and register it and pay royalties for my recording. If i don't, in the eyes of copyright law I am stealing. Over the past few decades it has become fairly well defined when a musical artist must pay royalties, when they should at least give credit, and when it just doesn't matter.

The world of comic-book and pop-culture art seems much more wild, wild west. Go to most any con and you'll likely find any number artists selling work that is obviously based on other people's creations. It may be in the form of original takes on other peoples characters (chibi-style superheroes). Mash-ups combining multiple fandoms (Star Trek and Star Wars characters together). I've even seen a lot of new semi-custom toys and action figures being sold that are based on old properties from the 70's and 80's. A lot of this is being done under the guise of fair-use laws, which is a pretty grey area but one that seems to be allowed for the time being.

Circling back to Mattina, where do any of you feel his work falls? Is he being inspired by others, paying homage to others, or just ripping them off? Maybe it's a little of all three? Last February Ron posted an article on known cover swipes of Action Comics #1. Were folks up in arms that all that work was ripped off? Or how about when a comic book artist uses a classic painting, say American Gothic by Grant Wood or Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, as the basis of their cover art.

Me personally? I feel it's a combination of all three. My eyes tell me that Mattina has at times crossed a line of creating something too similar to the original. It's also likely that you can also go to the original art he supposedly copied and find even older work by someone else that is very similar.

Cheers!

I also find it interesting that the main cover for Batman Who Laughs #2 by Jock has Batman in a nearly identical pose to the Mattina variant cover. Should Walter O'Neal also go after Jock? Such a grey area.

Entering creators who use nicknames

solarno
solarno
I'm curious to know if it's possible to expand the creator search function when entering creator data for individual issues to also look for nicknames as some artists rarely have their actual name in the book credits.

Recent example: Jock - artist and cover artist for Batman Who Laughs
When I've entered previous issues of Batman Who Laughs I've just searched for Jock and Jock by itself came up. It appears that the listing for Jock has now been updated to include his full name and reads as Mark "Jock" Simpson. This is great, but the search function now ignores "Jock". I didn't know his full name so couldn't look for Mark Simpson. I ended up going to previous books with Jock credits to find out that the name had been updated.

I've noticed this also with artists Stanley "Artgerm" Lau (which I knew so I could search for Lau), and Michele "Msassyk" Assarasakorn (which I didn't and it took a deep google dive to find).

There are many artists who go by nicknames, or have in the past, so it's great the mega computer allows for nicknames inside of actual names. It would be nice though if the search function looked for those nicknames. I would think that would lessen missing creator submissions.

Cheers!

I could see us setting up 3 areas with creators, First, Nickname and Last. Then make it searchable by either choice.

As long as the coding allowed, that would a great solution.

Ronbatman wrote:

Currently, it set to search on the last name only

That is the behavior on the Creator page under Community, but when entering creators for individual issues the search field already looks at first and middle name. Fun fact: It will even return names if you just type in initials, which is really freaking cool. Example: To find Danial Warren Johnson (Murder Falcon) I can just type in "d w j". This also returns Jordan D White which tells me that that particular search function looks for an entire name with matching character strings. But it always ignores nicknames.

While writing this response I was experimenting further and I think I discovered what is happening. Known nicknames are bracketed in either ' or " quotes (this is inconsistent). The individual issue search function requires those characters to find a nickname. Examples: Typing jock returns nothing but typing 'j returns Mark 'Jock' Simpson and one other. Typing artgerm returns nothing but typing 'a returns Stanley 'Artgerm' Lau and two others.

If you could find a way to make the individual issue creator search function ignore the ' or " in names that should allow searching by nicknames.

Cheers!
