These sorts of errors are not unheard of. very few people might pay more for such and error but usually scrambled up books do not appeal to most folks. Multiple covers is usually the money maker. |

More than likely it is a pricing error made by the person who entered the title in the first place. |

It is not a Whitman. The Western Publishing reprints still had the issue number. They only were missing the UPC. This has no UPC and no issue number date. If you had taken a look at the link I provided you would understand that this was a reprint issued under a different distributor. |

Going from collector to investor

I have learned that just buying what I like works best. "Investing" is too much work and you will almost always buy a majority of book that will be slow in appreciating. The way I would invest, if I had the money, is in the "blue chip" stock books. Basically most of the super hero books from 1930's to about 1961. After that keys in high grade only. Rarity can help but there are plenty of very rare books that are not worth all that much (even though they will sell when the time comes and you should make a profit). Ones desires also do not translate into big dollars. Investing in what is in demand is the best way to invest even if you may not be all that interested in the book. You also have to be ready to spend money to make it. Just trying to buy what may be the up and coming hit it gonna cost you a bundle but buying one that is established or starting on it's way can also be costly but it can still make you money. For example, a few years back now I purchased an NYX #3, raw, for $450 CAD, I got it pressed and graded and sold it for for $940 USD (just over $1000 CAD). So knowing the market and spending a bit of money can turn profit too and in not all that much time.
I wish you luck in your adventure. |

That would be a production error if there are no other holes in the book. If you were getting it graded by CGC you might request a "qualified" grade. I've seen that before in older books but it's not what I would consider common. I hope that helps. Ron
That is a bit of misinformation. There were a number of publishers that only used one staple in the period around and after the war. If the staple is placed in the centre of the spine and no other staple holes are present then it is likely they published with one staple. If the staple is off centre then likely it was a production error. I believe Fawcett's and Timely books of this period were publishers that manufactured their books with one staple around this time. edited by oxbladder on 1/30/2018 edited by oxbladder on 1/30/2018 |

Ox three years ago or so I was doing the same thing with paying off my three statues from them. Payment plans make it easy to jump in and buy from Sideshow. Hurts for awhile but man I’m so happy I bought mine and last year found space to display. Is Savage Tales hard to find in Canada?
I had to cut back on my modern purchases to afford the statues. I have three on order and one through my LCS coming. But I am looking forward to them!
No it's not hard to find but I am looking locally and in my area Marvel mags are not readily available in the stores. It's hard to believe that I haven't even seen a copy in person since I started collecting in 1979. It frustrates me. It's the one Man-Thing key that has eluded me. |

You may also want to check on other forums such as CBCS or CGC. There are usually a few GA collectors on those forums that should be able to confirm that your book was bound with a single staple or not. I just know enough to say that it was done and confirm a few publishers that practiced it.
EDIT: Scrap that here is a CGC graded copy of that book and ... one staple.

No. Apparent grade means it has been restored. If you go to the CGC site and look up the restoration designations you can figure out how extensive the resto is and value it accordingly. The value would be closer to what you would pay for a 2.5-3.0 or less. |

I wouldn't go higher than $1100 which is the last eBay auction for a Universal 3.0 193 days ago. However, I would actually not even go that high as the book is also trimmed so I wouldn't pay over $900. Even that might be high. edited by oxbladder on 2/7/2018 |

The trimming really hurts the value. 1100 pound is way too much. That would be more than people pay for CGC universals in 3.0 and DOWN. |

What do you thnk of Marvel's "Fresh Start?"

I have no complaints about Marvel, unlike most. On the surface some of the changes they did seemed bad but reading some of the offerings the last time around they were good reads. Marvel, however, did a poor job of handling the gripers. Mind you, if they did what readers wanted little would ever change in comics. Collectors absolutely hate change. So Marvel forced it and folks, of course, didn't like it. When Marvel PR responded with "you guys know nothing" it didn't go over too well.
As for reboots, variants, and everything else that is all the fault of the collector. Personally I never had issues jumping on a series late in the run but back before Marvel and DC did their rebooting there were LOTS of collectors, even on the old CPG forum, that said outright they didn't like jumping on a series late in a run. None of the reasons made sense to me but then again we are in the Tide Pod eating generation now. Same with variants. People are buying them so the big two, mostly, keep publishing them.
Now, I don't let the publishers off the hook though. I doubt the bean counters at Marvel and DC really have any clue just what the real numbers are on most, if not all of their books because they fluff them up with variants and reboots. Since they listen to the bean counters more than anything else they really have no clue what sells, what new ideas are working, and so forth. |

Starting at numbers ones? Again? Anyone keeping score? Does this make four or five times in ten years? More? You have to be kidding me. Maybe they could write some decent stories with decent art - yeah - quality -yeah - that might do it!!!
Four to DC's three. They are doing exactly what the market wanted. Bringing the same old, same old back. Nowadays changes at the big two mean the restart series at #1 .... until a big legacy number is being reached. Both companies have been doing it for some time now. Marvel took more flac for it because they pushed old characters to the side to introduce/give the spotlight to new young characters. Now they take flac for bring the old characters back and starting over. They are the company the hater like to hate now. There were lots of good reads in the last set-up but people just wanted to pout and gripe instead. Oh well, those folks could always pop over to DC and praise them for rebooting their series or returning to legacy numbering in time to milk fans money for the two big 1000 issues. To me they are both the same, Marvel just pissed people off because they went off script in their last round of changes. |
