I ended acquiring a small collection of comic books. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to assess what I have, but I would eventually like to be able to sell all of it. Does anyone have any good suggestions on doing so in such a way that I can get them out the door in a reasonable time frame, especially determining what would be worth my time in trying to sell them?

And as a side question, would it be worth signing up for an extended account here, given that I really won't have any interests beyond getting these particular books gone? I do note (look at what I entered in so far) that I'm finding a few books that seem to be beyond the pedestrian according to the price guide, so I have to wonder how best to maximize what I have.

I've been buying and selling a lot recently, and there are a few things that you need to keep in mind:

If you are looking to get maximum value from the sale, you will not be selling them quickly. The values listed on this site are accurate, but it may take quite some time to get those values. You can sell them on the classifieds here, you can sell them on craigslist, you can sell them at a local comic convention, all will work fine. If you are wanting to sell everything quickly, it will not be for the values listed on this site. You can approach a dealer or a local comic book store, and they will probably take everything you have. But, you are likely to get 10 cents an issue or so for the common stuff, and half the value for interesting issues (like the first appearance of a major character or something with some age.

Second, you will want to get a rough idea of how to grade your comics. There is a grading guide on this site, and it works very well. You can also use a free tool like this one:

Grading is the key to figuring out what comics are worth. People see that something is worth $80 in near mint and will ask for $80, despite the fact that the comic has been used as a coaster for two decades. If you are going to go for a quick sale to a dealer, you probably only need to do this for issues with a near mint value of $10 or more so you can make sure you aren't being ripped off. And if they are all in god condition and from the 1970's or earlier, then you can expect a tidy little payday.

I'd recommend a mix of the two styles, though, if you are looking to get rid of everything quick. Take a look through the collection and take out the best issues. Ones with age or ones with high value should be separated out and listed individually in the classifieds here, on eBay or on craigslist. The rest could just be dropped off at a dealers and sold really quick. Or, in my area, if you list a collection for under $100 per long box, it will sell very quickly on craigslist. This may vary in your area, though. It works out to about 40 cents an issue.

Now, if you are wanting to sell through the classifieds here, then you will want to pay for an extended account. You are going to end up paying to sell your comics, one way or another, though. If nothing else, keep a little excel database of what you have. It will make things so much easier in the long run for you.

Hope this helps.
