I use EGerber mylites2 and fullbacks to store my comics. Is it silly to buy acid free storage boxes if using Mylar and acid free backing boards for comics? A storage box is just a box is my thinking, paying extra for a acid free storage box doesn’t make sense to me. 5 boxes for $75, $15 a box. $15 a box might as well buy plastic corrugated box. Any thoughts to set me straight is much welcomed.

What are you keeping the acid in the box away from? The Mylar? I say, save your money and buy regular storage boxes

If you have acid free boards, mylars, and acid free boxes, what happens to books with The Joker or Two-Face origin stories in them?

Okay - to get serious. It is important to store comics properly. You are going the extra effort and expense of storing in mylar. Great job.

As noted in the link below - Polypropylene bags should be "acid neutral". You comic book boxes should be at least "acid neutral" as well.
If you put in a plastic box there is a chance the box could have some small amount of out-gassing - this should be absorbed by your boards - but you may have to change boards more often.

As noted here http://www.bagsunlimited.com/category/55/comic-storage-boxes comic book boxes are special made from acid-free materials.

Hope this helps.

The single biggest thing you can do to preserve your comics is store them in the right environment. Without that it really doesn't matter what you use.

Now first are the "acid free" boards you are using from Gerber, as in full or half backs? If not then no I wouldn't bother with an acid free box because that board you are using is not acid free. Gerber Half/Full Backs use fully buffered board and even when they have reached their buffering capacity they remain neutral. All the cheaper boards are "acid free" on one side only and that buffering capacity is usually spent by the time you open the package and they are now slightly acidic. So if you use cheaper boards change to the Gerber full/half backs. As for the boxes it would likely help to have them in "acid free" boxes but whether that help warrants the expense is really debatable. Honestly I don't even know if there are stats out there that show mylar and acid free add and more life to a book stored in a regular bag and board in a regular box. Again if the environment is good that alone is the single biggest factor in preserving paper objects.
