What if is my favorite comic of all time...

There are indeed multiple volumes, but each "volume" is a bunch of one-shots at least that's how I've always cataloged it.

Vol 1 is the original 1-47 issues and the Iron Man Traitor Special

Vol 2 is a mixed bag... 1-114 and a little extra:

During the Vol 2 run, Marvel attempted to publish "What If" type stories under a separate "Marvel Alterniverse" brand emblem.
This included Issues 76 - 86 of the Volume 2 Run, plus the following books:
- Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe
- The Last Avengers Story #1 and #2
- Ruins #1 and #2

They gave up and went back to the standard Marvel emblem after that with issue 87 to 114.

Wikipedia actually has a pretty good page about all the different volumes and the issues in each voluem, basically every year or two since volume 2... A batch of one shots released all at once, and then reprinted in a trade paperback.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_What_If_issues

Volume "13" from 2018 is the last one listed, even though it doesn't list it as a volume (or the previous releases, volumes 10-12).

But wait! There's more!

March 2019, a compilation trade paperback of Volume 13 is released "With Great Power" with the Peter Parker Punisher on the front and all the issues from that volume.

In 2020/2021, not much going on, but some "What If" Omnibus books were published with multiple alternate covers.

The new volume 14!

Shelf date May 2022 What If? Volume 10 kicks off with #1 - #5
1 - What if Miles Morales became Captain America
2 - What if Miles Morales became Wolverine.
3 - What if Miles Morales became the Hulk
4 - What if Miles Morales became Thor
5 - What if all the what if Miles characters formed a team with the Miles Morales Spider-Man

Kind of silly, if you ask me.

Yes, the numbering is incredibly squirrely, Overstreet essentially groups each volume (Volume 3 and up) by the year they were released, doesn't reference a series number or volume number for those books, and relies on listing the character/series the alternate storyline is pulled from followed by the What If question for each issue.

For example in Overstreet, all the issues from 2009, which I'd call Volume 7, follow the formula above... In that group, you've got "Fallen Son", "House of M", "Fantastic Four", "Secret Wars", and "Spider-Man Back in Black". 5 issues total. In overstreet, it's "Spider-Man Back in Black: What if Mary Jane had been shot instead of Aunt May"

you can delete the duplicate post in the Marvel forum now, wrong place for it..
they're listed as individual titles since the end of volume 2 with #200. The rest are one-shots and not listed as volumes. so just add the character or team name to the 'what if' search, like just 'What if Daredevil' and they should come up. Using just 'What if' will find them all too, so ALWAYS try using fewer key words. You'd have no way of knowing all this normally, so not your fault, there's many things about the search that are 'unique' and need changing/fixing, but it's a slow process.

I tested a number of 'vol 3' and '4' ones with colons and dots and the question mark, and the search engine needs tweaking. the best results were by using just 'What if' and the character or team name, with no punctuation and no story name. if you search using 'starts with' to get more narrow results, and use the colon or question mark after What if, not all will come up. dunno how marvel writes it in the indicia for all of the volumes. The 2006 DD one has the cover as 'What If ? Featuring Daredevil' and using that doesn't bring it up, nor does using 'What If? Daredevil'. If you use the colon, like 'What if: Daredevil', that works with the 2006 one, but then the 2009 one won't show. so methinks it would be better if the search ignored the punctuation like it does with many other titles.
see more search tips (4th post down): https://comicspriceguide.com/forum/topic12110-evil-ernie-youth-gone-wild-directors-cut.aspx

https://comicspriceguide.com/faqs for a few How To answers about submitting missing images and reporting missing issues etc.

Watch CPG's 'How To' youtube videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3eOHtGDGIs0GGohUDuypf3TlQM2aupdo

happy hunting.
edited by collectibleshop on 4/25/2022
edited by collectibleshop on 4/25/2022
