After numerous years of being out of the comic book game, I've found myself sucked back into my childhood hobby. Long story short, I was going through my old collection and would like to get an answer to a burning question I've had for decades. How bad does the black check mark on my Amazing Spider-man #6 affect the grade/value?

http://s1376.photobucket.com/user/alanguitarguy/media/20170129_175832_zpseu1x6sob.jpg.html

http://s1376.photobucket.com/user/alanguitarguy/media/20170129_180306_zpsfqqhupfi.jpg.html

http://s1376.photobucket.com/user/alanguitarguy/media/20170129_180346_zpsltyldilw.jpg.html
(The dark areas on the back cover on the left are actually shadows, and there is a 1/4-1/2 inch rip in the back cover that might not be evident in the picture.)

http://s1376.photobucket.com/user/alanguitarguy/media/20170129_180432_zpsyp4k8bfp.jpg.html

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Alan
edited by Alanguitarguy on 1/29/2017

Marking generally put the comics in the 4.0 grading area - but also depends on other factors. Also depends on how nice the interior pages are, spine, etc. With rip you are looking a t 4.0

Cool book anyway. Just old enough you night think about getting cleaned and tear fixed professionally. Send directly to me so I can assess better!

KDS

That's in the F/VF (7.0) range. Maybe a 7.5 (VF-).
The same goes for the writing on back. It's in pen, and scribbled all over the back cover. *Just* the date, like "2/3/71" would be better than "Bought in", but it's on the back so I'd say a 7.5 or an 8.0 (VF- or VF).
That's what grade THOSE DEFECTS are in. If the comic's overall appearance is MUCH better than 7.5/8.0, then bump it up a little.
If it has other defects that make it worse... then those will hurt it.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I figured the writing would mark it down fairly significantly. But, as you pointed out, it's still an Amazing Spiderman #6! Thankfully my #4 doesn't have any such writing... :-)

Good idea on the scanner. I'll look into getting one.

Alan

Marker like that's a pretty serious hurt to the grade. Pen wouldn't have been so bad. From what I know (which is not much) marker of that size is around the 4.0 (Very Good) area. Some say even lower. But the book looks in really nice shape aside from that and the b/c tear.

Note: Pictures from a camera are nice, but scans are awesome. We love scans. You can get a new All-In-One Printer/Scanner for $50.

Opinion: Even with that marker mark and b/c tear, I'd say get it CBCS graded. It's an ASM #6.
