I was a big fan of pre-Unity Valiant. Former editor-in-chief of Marvel founded the company in 1989. He was ousted in an unethical manner by his business partners in 1992.
In 1993, Jim obtained funding to start DEFIANT Comics. Marvel sued them out of the starting gate which consumed their start-up capital and delayed a multi-million dollar to deal with Mattel. The delay caused the toy deal to fall through. Realizing that the comics market had an implosion in 1994, they paid all the artists for outstanding work and shut down the business. The next year, he started Broadway Comics for Lorne Michaels' Broadway video.

In 2003 or so, I was trying to buy some DEFIANT comics artwork on eBay. I became frustrated because there was no accurate information about DEFIANT Comics on the web or in print. Price Guides and web sites were not listing everything that had been published and they were listing comics that had been solicited, but had had been published. At the time, I was just trying to figure out which pages of art came from which comics.

In my frustration, I thought to myself "Why doesn't someone make a web page that tells people about DEFIANT Comics!" Then I realized that I had more info on the company than many other collectors. I realized that I had no right to complain if I was unwilling to make they web site myself. So I did. Using free web hosting, I created "The Unofficial Archive of DEFIANT Comics". It's moved over the years, but it's seeing a resurgence of popularity lately.

I've exchanged info with creators and fans for some 17 years. I was an annonymous contributor to a DEFIANT Comics fanzine published this year by Lucky Comics.


A week or so ago I turned down an offer to be part of a professional podcast which would be interviewing Jim Shooter a second time. The podcast host felt that I would have some good questions for Jim.

I prefer to just get the info out there. I'm not looking for notoriety. My life is interesting enough without comic fans and celebrities interacting with me.


Defiant1 is just a name I chose to associate me with my website. It also describes me well when Valiant Fans want to talk about Valiant Comics being good after 1993. They weren't.

I have many comic checklists online, my most extensive checklist is one for EC Comics and all the foreign EC reprints.

I did a higher quality scan of this for a fanzine.
The fanzine is being offered on Kickstarter.

It's complete and the funding goal has been met.

I don't buy stuff online and I told them I didn't really want any credit.

I still encourage people to get a copy if they are fans of DEFIANT Comics or the creators who worked there.

Actually, one of my biggest regrets as far as buying art was passing on a Manara piece. It was a red riding hood storyboard piece for a TV ad. I had the money, I just didn't want to allocate $1000 to it. I had other things going on and I didn't want to sacrifice on the daily things.

I'm cheap, so I tend to migrate towards preliminary art pieces. They are more affordable and if your interest is in just having a piece by the artist, you get their raw pencils, not an inked interpretation. Buying the Olivia piece helped me get a price break on the Mayhew piece. Artists want to be associated with other respected artists. When I told him I bought the Olivia piece, he said he could negotiate on his prices.

It definitely resembles her from the photo I provided, but small touches of beauty I see in her weren't captured. In real life she's a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10. Her South American and Caribbean features don't shine through. She smiled when she saw it. I told her that she could have the original. She's an artist, but she didn't know who Neal is. She just wanted a copy. I still have the original.

I was accused of being romantic by women online.

I almost had Bill Sienkiewicz do one from another photo. He was enthusiastic about it, but I was unable to allocate time to wait.

I was overjoyed to get a page of art one year at Dragon Con.
To my dismay, this page was drawn after the artist quit inking his own art by hand. I'm not sure how long it lasted, but he started hand drawing the art in blue pencils and then he scanned it into a computer and inked it in the computer. Regardless, I like the art and I was glad to get a page. I bought this from Chris Staros founder of Top Shelf Comics.

investigating to see if that was his wife but I never got anywhere with
that. There is a rough illustration on the wall in the background that
seemed to relate to EC comics. It took several years to locate any
similar EC image like that in print. It appears to be Dave Berg
reproducing Graham Ingels art on the cover to Squa Tront #4. Perhaps the
original art was actually on the wall in Mr. Gaines' office?! I like
Dave berg's work so this is an item I really like a lot.

This was a very
affordable piece of art from the Spider-man newspaper cartoon. It
doesn't really have Spider-man in this one so it was cheaper. I just
grabbed it at Heroes Con one year as an afterthought.

Then he makes this second image with black & blue pencils to assist with shading and depth I believe. Don't quote me on that. From there Steve Fastner paints his paining of the image using this as a guide.

This is Flaming Frame #19. It is a custom frame made by Roxanne Star with original Flaming Carrot sketch art by Bob Burden. Both were setup together at a comic show. This was the nicest sketch I've gotten from Bob at a comic show.. Normally he does real quick loose sketches for fans. This piece functions a stand-alone one panel cartoon with tight pencils and inks.
