A week or so ago, I stopped into a local comic shop while I was waiting for new tires at a shop nearby.
I saw an old EC comic on the wall. The color palette was off and the
width on it was that of a more modern comic. I thought that was odd, so I
look at it more closely and realized it must be a Canadian reprint from
the 50's. I asked the shop to let me see the indicia and it was indeed a
Superior comics reprint from the 1950's. I've been wanting one for
years since I've been scouring the web looking for scans to complete my
cover gallery. I shelled out the high price. It's got color fading in
one corner. It's got a tear on the cover, and it's either the worst
miscut I've ever owned or it was trimmed decades ago. I didn't analyze
the edge too closely, because I didn't care. These are rare!

Weird Fantasy #14 (Superior Comics)

Unfortunately, the cut is so bad and the
defects are too bad for me to use the scan on my cover gallery. Still,
I'm glad to own one. Did I say these are rare? LOL! I haven't scanned
the indicia yet. I plan to do so.

My index of what might exist is here:
http://comicchecklist.atwebpages.com/EC/Superior/Superior_EC_Index.html

My cover gallery of collected images online is here:
http://comicchecklist.atwebpages.com/EC/Superior/Superior_EC_Reprints.html

Defiant1
edited by Defiant1 on 6/26/2021

I'd start collecting scans and figure out what the rarities were in the process. I discovered Topps promo comics. Someone pointed me to a Splatterball with no foil on the cover from DEFIANT. I discovered that Miracle on Broadway existed from Broadway Comics. I found out a My Secret #2 exists from Atlas. It becomes an interesting revelation when you take one company and focus on bringing a cover gallery to completion. Someone challenged me to create a Charlton Cover Gallery. Charlton was a company that had lousy quality product, but I liked he fact that they existed. I liked the fact that someone made a drag racing comic or romance comics. There are only a few that I'd like to own. The ones that interest me the most are the short lived series like this that came out around the time the whole industry was imploding. They'd buy out other publishers and publish whatever stories had already been completed "in the can" so to speak. Also, Charlton's facility was severely flooded during the 50's and it crippled their production. The low print run and short lived series from the 50's interest me especially if it was an oddball theme. Kirby also worked for them for a short period after they bought up a publisher that he worked for. If I was to encounter a ZaZa the Mystic comic, I'd probably jump on that chance unless it was horribly overpriced. I doubt I will ever come close to finishing my Charlton Cover Gallery within my lifetime.

I've never seen the Mallrats cards online other than the set I have posted. I think I snagged several packs that were wrapped in clear cellophane. I only opened the one pack and that's the full set.

I made it as easy as possible for him (no scaling up or down required, no backgrounds interfering). His son's eyes popped out and he talked his dad into doing it. She liked it even though she didn't know who he was. Some women online said that's romantic (awwww!) and I treasure it far more than I would a sketch of Batman or Superman. I was able to negotiate a sightly lower price by comparing my request to some other sketch price offers he had in his package deal with his other products.

Dragon Con 2010 is the only time I've ever met him. I have exchanged emails with him and bought comics through Continuity dealing with his son directly by email.

Defiant1

I think they are nice to have. The ones with heavy stock covers and the $1.95 cover prices were this first ones. They were printed in large numbers. There are some "no price" variants on some that are much harder to find. The ones without the thicker stock covers that have $1.50 cover prices are reprints. They are more difficult to find and even I do not own them all. The hardcover & softcover collections above are not easy to find either.

Defiant1

It was selling for $10 which was a lot for a new comic back then. After getting out of comics for ten years, Micronauts #1 taught me a lot. It was back in dollar boxes in 1992. My purchase of Iron Man #1 for $10 had gone up to be worth about $150. It taught me to not get hooked on fads even though it's a nice book to own. My X-Men #1 had gone up in value from $100 to $600. I learned to not put confidence in fads and I learned that key books will have a long term steady increase. I learned to buy the key books in a series as early as possible and then fill in the cheaper ones later.

Defiant1

People's biggest criticism was that Continuity books looked like they were all drawn by Neal Adams clones. Neal actually redrew some of the faces so the characters had a consistent look.
People would say that and I'd say "How is that bad?"

Deodato drew some of the last Samuree comics. Many of the stories were weak, but I never had a problem with their art. Armor #4 (Vol. 1) is generally considered to be one of the best stories that Continuity ever published.

Defiant1

I was VERY displeased with the condition upon arrival... but it was all that I could afford and it was the only retailer that had one advertised for sale. Later in the year, I'd saved some money and my local comic shop picked up a similar condition copy and had it priced $100. I bought it with the hope to upgrade. I was hoping a retailer might be willing to do a 2 for 1 trade if they had a higher grade copy. A few months went by and I couldn't afford to date and collect comics. I was more of a Marvel fan. I was buying long boxes of comics in the 90's when the industry imploded and stores started closing. I was also buying "reader copy" collections during the same time period, but most weren't that great. This was never something I intentionally sought out. It was just something that ended up in a bulk collection that I bought very cheaply. I do have an appreciation of Wrightson's art, so this was something I set aside when I discovered I owned it. I then forgot about it until I scanned the cover a few years back. I forgot about it again until I saw the scan in my photobucket account. I do think it's neat.

I've been collecting so long that when I see Hulk #181, my mind remembers plopping down 25¢ for it at a convenience store. When I see what some of this stuff goes for now, I'm actually horrified because I would never pay that much.
When I pay $100 for some non-key pre-hero Tales to Astonish issue, newer collectors are horrified. It works both ways.

Pick up what you can afford when you can afford it, and eventually other people will be looking at your collection with envy. I had to be creative or stretch my budget to get the silver age Marvel keys I own, but those are the comics I appreciate the most today.

They are easy to take apart, but they need something to keep the cable straight.

Defiant1 - http://comics.vforums.co.uk

I'll start with the series I'm collecting, but I haven't bought any in a
long while.
I collect to simply own the books.
It's always nice to see
pristine examples of a printing press' capabilities, but that's not why I
buy comics.

Tales To Astonish #1

edited by Defiant1 on 6/26/2021
