However, as the tattoo insert is stapled into the book, it would be pretty darn difficult to remove one from a lower value book and add it into the ASM.

Aaron

Someone once told me that that tattoos are not exclusive to that issue of Spider-Man and that you could purchase another comic that never went up in price and take the tattoo out of that one and put it into an issue of number 238 that might be missing a tattoo. It's as simple as that... At least that is what the guy told me.

So, I have a few last scans from the collection that I realize I never got around to posting. I also realize that I didn't scan nearly as many of my X-Men comics as I did my Avengers. Oh, well.

This came from the pedigree collection. It was basically almost every Marvel comic that was released between 1980 and 1983. When you consider what that entails, it's pretty amazing stuff. Frank Miller on Daredevil, Claremont and Byrne on X-Men, Michelinie and Layton on Iron Man... Pretty good stuff.

It also included the first 30 or so issues of this:

And this:

Until I found this in a collection, I honestly had no clue this existed. It's not something I had ever heard of or come across and it wasn't something I would have sought out. But, it's cool to have.

This was in the second collection I ever bought. The collection had an almost complete run of West Coast Avengers up to #60 or something and a complete run of X-Factor up to #60 something and another 100 or so comics. The guy had gotten several offers that were basically "You're looking or $300 for the whole collection? How about I give you $75 for these 3 issues (#5, #6 and #24)?" If a guy wants to sell in bulk, he wants to sell in bulk. So, I was able to snag the entire collection for 86 cents an issue, most of which I was actually interested in. I somehow suspect that we are near the top of the market for this one, though.

That's all for now, though. Everything I own is bagged, boarded and in a proper box (and my living room no longer looks like I'm a hoarder!). I've been looking for another good collection, but craigslist is not obliging. A few lackluster collections have come up, but nothing that I really must buy. Well.... there's one that I want to investigate when I get some more time. Has a few Avengers I need from the Perez era, a few Daredevil's I'm missing.... But it's the type of collection where he says he's got "Spider-Man #47." Amazing Spider-Man? Spectacular? Info insufficient... And I've learned not to assume the best when a guy says that. I was hoping for Amazing when that happened last. Would have been happy with Spectacular. Nope.... Web of Spider-Man. Such is the perils of buying collections.

These are the last few of the recent pick ups from the cons and the collection. I have more that I picked up while the forums were down, but I'll just finish off the recent things for now.

There were only two issues of Strange Tales in the collection. It makes sense since the guy seemed to like Doctor Strange. But a nice, frequently overlooked issue in decent shape.

Jim Starlin issues featuring Warlock or Thanos. Always nice to find for cheap.

So, while I was at the con, a guy walked up to my table and saw what I was selling. He figured I might be interested in the stuff he was trying to sell. Why you would go to a con to sell a few issues, I don't know. Anyway, most of the stuff, I already had, but I did buy what he was offering (at a very low price. He was very insistent that I should buy his stuff. I gave him near guide for the stuff I didn't have, and still feel like I over paid for everything.) Anyway, now I'm two issues closer to a full run of Uncanny X-Men. This was the only expensive issue I was missing between #125 and #350.

Then you can have a nice one and one for reading

otoh; if you don't dig the story, then that one is fine...

Yep, that collection was a sweet score.

Honestly, I have never had any interest in getting a slabbed comic. While I can't claim to have read everything in my collection, part of the thing about owning a comic is reading it. And I don't really want to have to pay $18 extra just to read an issue. I had a collection that I was looking to buy that had a graded copy of New Teen Titans #3 in it. I ended up paying less for the collection and letting him keep the graded issue. I'm more likely to pick up a trade in order to have a reader copy of something I am worried to open. I might consider getting a slabbed issue if it was something really expensive, just to get a little assurance of the quality, but that's about it.

Anyway, a few more pick ups while I'm here.

Any time you find a 12 cent issue in decent condition, it's a good day.

I was a little surprised at how little this was listing for. I mean, I know it's not the first appearance, but still sort of major.

Now this one is worth a bit. Not something I would have sought out, but when you find it in a collection for a dollar, it's a great find. And it will probably go up in value over the next little bit.

My scanner has trouble with white covers. But, the reason I'm showing this off is because it was the last issue of New Teen Titans that I needed to complete my run. I'm still missing a few issues of Tales of the Teen Titans, but those will come soon enough. A little lower grade than I would have liked, but not terrible, particularly for the price I paid.

I also got a Nova #1 in the collection, but it's a little rough. Missing a small but noticeable amount of its cover. And there's still another major key coming as I go through the collection and get it all organized.

So, let's see.... where did I leave off... Well, there were two conventions over the last two weekends. As much as I probably could have gone nuts and spent a fortune and spent every penny I made from selling my duplicates, I chose restraint. I just picked up some cheap comics to fill in my runs of Avengers, Uncanny X-Men and Amazing Adventures. But, between the two conventions, I also bought another collection. Had a lot of good stuff in there for me, and I'll be showing it off as I get everything entered and rebagged. Here we go...

I don't claim that many of my Amazing Adventures are in high grade. And I probably overpaid for the 1st Killraven up there (ok, definitely, according to CPG's prices), but I'm now only 2 issues away from having a full Killraven collection.

The collection contained a lot of Amazing Spider-Man issues like these that I needed. Not great condition, but still not too bad for a buck an issue. I also got a few condition upgrades in the early 200's in addition to knocking a half a dozen issues off my "look for" list.

Now Avengers is where I really stocked up with the collection. Between the conventions, the collection and a trip to my LCS, I added almost two dozen issues of Avengers to my collection.

Right now, the plan is to go through this collection, and get everything entered and rebagged, while posting highlights, then get back to the rebagging the remaining comics. So, I'll have a bunch of stuff to show off over the next week or so, I think.

Oxbladder wrote:

Avengers before Heroes reborn was actually quite good. I got quite a few people buying the title back then. FF too was good ... Until the last six issues before heroes reborn where they pretty much gave up on the title.

Really, it just came down to the fact that Marvel was going bankrupt at about the time and they wanted to boost sales of books that could do better, I think. I don't know. I was 12 when Heroes Reborn happened.

Anyway, it was a holiday weekend here so I got a lot of scanning done and went through the last of my 1000 bags and boards. Some scans are from the old forum, others are new. Here we go:

Speaking of relaunches... I think Marvel Knights had better quality, plus Christopher Priest, who I already knew from Quantum and Woody, and Mark Texiera. I minored in African History (so useful...) so I enjoyed a lot of Black Panther stuff in the next series. Thought they got it right what kind of nation Wakanda would have needed to be in the past to be the nation it is in the present.

I have some cool Cap's, although my buddy is huge into him. This one passed through several hands, though no money changed hands. My brother's friend, who got it from her dad, gave this to him back when we still had a joint collection, then when we divided up the collection, I got it. Because I was into X-Men and neither of us had much in the way of Captain America. Didn't realize it was so important until later.

I mentioned I got this in a collection buy recently. First Crossbones came in the same box as Sandman #1 at 50 cents an issue.

But in terms of good buys, nothing beats Daredevil. I bought a long box for $55 that was stuffed with Daredevil. Including this one. 15 cents an issue. I think I've told this story a few times... But it also included almost every issue from #168-#325, most in pretty high grade.

Some not so high, but still cool.

And the $1900 collection had a lot of Daredevil, too. So now my Daredevil Collection is probably up there with my Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man and Uncanny X-Men collections (that's going to come later).

Mostly showing this off since it's one of my more valuable books and if I ever do a Top 10 or something, I'm going to want a scan ready.

This was the last of the Elektra run that I needed. Found it in the $1900 collection. I use that term, really it just means I got a lot at once, and paid about 45% of graded guide value (though a lot of the things like Master of Kung Fu or ROM could have easily been found for $1 or less and not the $2-$4 the guide says, so... grain of salt)

First Typhoid Mary. Should go up in value, I'd think.

I remember thinking that the Wizard 1/2 comics were so cool. But I think they are still worth exactly what I paid for them. As is this baby:

I've got a lot more scanned, so let's make another post. I used to break them up and only do 3 or 4 covers a post on the old forums since they ran slow and I'd often lose the entire post if I took too long. Don't have that issue with the new forums! Just... 24 scans in a post is a bit much.

I'm hoping to be able to make enough money off selling my duplicates at the cons this month to be able to justify adding more Avengers to my collection. Strangely, I don't seem to be having a ton of luck off the bulk buys in recent months with Avengers. They have mostly been condition upgrades, but few new issues. Which is odd, because I'm missing a bunch from the 90's. I have almost every issue released in the 80's but not much after the 30th anniversary.

Oxbladder wrote:

Nice bunch of Avengers!

(Actually, Byrne has often stated he is the only person who can do certain things.
One more Spider-Man:

You can really see the dust on my scanner bed in this one. The actual comic is probably 9.9. There is only a tiny little crease on the spine that doesn't even break the colour.

But let's move onto the Avengers. As nice as the Amazing Spider-Man collection is, I think Avengers is actually more impressive. I just have more small gaps. So, lets see what all I have that I have scanned...

A few months back, I ran across the border to get a collection of Silver Age Avengers like this one for $10 an issue. They were mostly in this sort of condition. Not bad, not great, but for $10 an issue, it's hard to complain.

I think I got this off eBay a while back. I don't really know, honestly. But hey, old Avengers.

I loved this storyline as a kid. I think this was actually the first time I ever upgraded a comic for condition reasons. I bought a beat up one for $5 at a con and then, found this one on eBay. So, may as well get rid of the ratty one.

And the next issue is pretty good, too. First new Black Knight. Also an eBay purchase.

This was not from eBay. This was from the $1900 collection. I wonder what all I'm going to end up showing off from this collection by the time everything else is said and done... He had a few old comics that he had bought, this being one of them. Not exactly in great condition, but it's still one of my most valuable issues.

This is from that same $10 each cross border collection. The reds in this cover really didn't hold up well. But it's still a decent comic.

I've owned this one for a while. Probably came from eBay. Always like the Vision....

I found this one in a collection and thought, "Hey, decent reader copy, I guess...." Then I opened it and saw that the issue has coupons and such cut out. So I upgraded it during my last trip to my LCS. I don't ever begrudge damage that came from reading the comics, like creases, fingerprints and the like. Comics were supposed to be read, after all. But cutting pieces out of it? Writing on it? That just bugs me.

First Scott Lang. Not bad condition, but definitely not high grade. High Grade is VF or higher, right? Database says I bought it for $3. Probably at a con.

Also from the $1900 collection. The collection had a rather hefty run of Avengers from the early 80's, so I got a nice expansion to my run and filled in some gaps. Plus, hey, first Taskmaster.

This one was in the collection, too, but it's from my collection. I picked up most of this run at one con or another many years ago.

And the first Nebula, bought for under a buck. Won't find that deal on eBay anymore....

I actually have a bunch more Avengers scanned, but there are only so many that I feel I should post. I have a LOT of Avengers. I started collecting during Heroes Reborn and didn't stop until I stopped collecting around the time of Siege. Though a bunch of that is New & Mighty and such... But still, database says that the run up to Disassembled is about 2/3rds complete.

So, I've been hitting the organization project pretty hard over the last few days. Here are some of the interesting ones that I've come across. Some are new, others are old. Either way, none have been shown here yet, so....

That Teen Titans collection that I got? Yeah, it extends into the Tales series. And includes some pretty nice copies of almost all of them. I'm missing a few, but not a ton. Oh, and that one was in a collection I got for 36 cents an issue.

Oh, and the new stuff, too. But I'm showing this off because I seriously have no idea what to do with comics that other people got signed. I think it's interesting, but of no real additional value to me. I don't know if I should be keeping them? Or just sell them? I don't know. I now have two copies of every issue of Crisis on Infinite Earths one of which is signed by Wolfman. Now if is were signed by Perez...

I now have a strange amount of Wonder Woman comics. Mostly because they have some really strong artists and writers on them. Perez, Byrne, Dodson... Yeah...

Also, here are some Amazing Spider-Man

I have a lot more Amazing Spider-Man. The collection takes up more than 2 full long boxes. And I mean stuffed full. Most of them were part of my brother's collection, but I saw that a full collection was possible, so I've been adding a lot to it. It's at the point that I'm only missing 26 issues.

Oh, and the next boxes are full of Avengers, so.... yeah, that's coming...

It's been quiet in here... to quiet... and then the Korean Spammers came.... So, let's post something that isn't spam!

I bought another collection on Tuesday, about 500 issues (about 150 of which are duplicates to be sold at the con in a few weeks). I'm still going through it, but there are some good things in there. It's from a guy who's willing to buy 1000 comics to get 4 or 5 issues, so he usually gives me first refusal on the leftovers. He has some very specific tastes. I also got to go through a box of stuff his personal collection that he is considering selling. Along with a high low grade 15 cent Avengers, maybe 3.5-4.0, I got these two issues:

Not exactly high grade, but speculators have been driving up the price of Amazing Adventures #1 and Nick Fury is getting a bit hard to find. Plus, they are pretty good looking mid grade issues.

And when I went to pick up more bags and boards at my LCS, I picked up two more issues, one was this:

One more Avengers issue closer to the full run.

So, I'll be posting more as I get everything bagged and boarded. I'm almost through my DC issues. Now I have to figure out how to add more to my collection... As I'm half way through the collection, I have to add another long box.... Well planned, Doug....

In Vancouver, there are usually a bunch for sale on Craigslist. Problem is, more than a few think that if they have $5,000 worth of stuff, they can ask for $5,000 for the collection. You have to filter through a lot of collections like that to find the good ones, and hope you are faster than the full time dealers. And then there's the question of what to do with all the stuff in the collection that you don't want.... But there are some great ones to be had, since a lot of the time, people just want to make sure that someone will enjoy their old collection and take care of it.

Thank you for the kind words, all. I know it's not the easiest thing to read about, especially since I'm sure most people were just expecting more scans (I do have some that I'll post later today, though). But I know that when I first started posting these stories on another site a few years back, not the same story, not necessarily my story, it was amazing the number of people who started to come out of the woodwork, sharing similar stories and even getting a little help.

Joker, I've seen the attitude change over the years, too. The stigma is still there, but it's easing. I know when I was university, they were just starting to realize that brain chemistry was a thing. So during my psychology classes, we were told to get people checked for physical problems first. Most people would rather have thyroid cancer than depression because thyroid cancer "wasn't their fault." On the plus side, up here we had an election ad about "our opponents would let the guy who killed his family then claimed mental illness out into society." The sheer revulsion that people had to that ad was a welcome sign that things are changing. Up here, at least.

Thanks for sharing. I heard that story about the man falling in a hole when I was in AA over twenty years ago. It rings true in so many ways in helping ourself with help of others. Most of my adult life I have relayed on others to save me from myself and my mental illness and help me not to self medicate myself by drugs and alcohol.
I've lost jobs, home and friends from my illness. Lucky I have never lost my families support. Mental health issues will occur in 1 out of four people I understand. Seems now it is becoming more acceptable to the masses but still has too many that don't understand or has stigma to someone that has a mental health issue. Some media in the states don't help the progress while others bring the good attention to mental health. Lawyers and some people that commit crimes use mental health as a excuse in their crimes. Well sorry, I got sidetracked.
Sharing your story is well appreciated, and thank you.

CapnDoug wrote:

So, I finally got a hold of the bags and boards I needed (well, a portion of, anyway...). That means I'm currently going through the more recent pick ups and getting them sorted into the new collection. I keep new pick ups separate until after they have new bags and boards. I'm weird that way, I guess. Anyway, I've already shown off a bunch of the ones I got, so check them out in the posts I put up last year for... oh yeah...

I collected every Superman title there was for a few years there. I can't claim that all of them were good, but there were classic stories like this one. Bought it new, so I paid cover price. Well, a bit less, since it was $5 after the store discount was factored in. I've been getting a few decent Silver and Bronze Age Action Comics in the recent collection buys, but let's face it, those are often more notable for the ridiculous covers.

This one's a bit worse for wear, but I keep finding Adventure Comics in my bulk buys. And when you are getting stuff like this for $0.86, you can't really complain.

I recall saying that I bought a collection for $1900. If not, I bought a collection for $1900. This was in the box of "stuff I'll throw in just to get rid of." The guy was all about Marvel (seriously, he collected a bunch of Marvel titles starting at the end of 1978 or so, ending in about 1984. Good stuff, too. X-Men, Daredevil, Iron Man, ROM... I'll be showing a bunch of those off when I get to them). After all was said and done and I had everything cataloged, I had paid about 45 cents on the dollar for everything. This issue was about $16.

So, before I bought that $1900 collection, I realized I needed to start getting serious about selling my duplicates. And if I was going to pay 45% of their graded value, I couldn't just bring them down to my LCS. As such, I started getting a table at the local cons. Which is a tad awkward since the dealer who runs the major local con was supposed to have the ability to price match on that collection. He didn't get it. Anyway, that dealer ended up buying some of my duplicates (a bunch of which were in the aforementioned collection) and gave me a nice deal on the whole set of Batman Year One original issues. All four for $40 in 9.2-9.6.

And from recent bulk buys I've been cobbling together a pretty solid collection of post-Crisis Batman. I've had a pretty solid collection for a while, but now the #400-500 range is almost complete. There's a guy I've bought a few bulk boxes off. He does bulk buys, too, but he'll do it to get a few issues and then sell the rest. The whole death of Jason Todd story (along with some other good Batman issues) were in the collection. The collection that I got for $0.36 an issue. Not too bad.

Anyway, at this point, I'm starting with my boxes of DC. I'm part way through Batman. I'll be showing off the best finds as I go. There are some good ones.

I dig all of those!

That Superman story is brilliant, and those Batman books are CRISP! Love 'em!

TEX

So, this isn’t going to be a normal post. In Canada, we are bombarded with mental health commercials in the month of January, because Bell Canada does a “Let’s Talk” campaign designed to raise money and raise awareness for mental health issues. Given the number of media outlets that Bell owns, it gets a lot of coverage. And for the last few years, I’ve been writing about these issues in the communities that I have been affiliated with. In my political life I have tried to advocate this as well, since mental health is one of the least understood health issues and one that effects a massive number of people. Partly because it’s something that very few people talk about. So, we need to start talking about it. Sharing our experience on all sides of it and how we deal with it. So that’s what this is.

I re-read Identity Crisis on the weekend. I don’t know if I should have, but some of the images had been cropping up over the last year. In particular the image of Ralph Dibny struggling to hold himself together. But re-reading it, I saw so many more things. Mostly because I went through something very similar. I don’t remember exactly what I said on the old forums about my brother, but that’s what this post is about.

About two years ago, my brother’s marriage began to collapse. There were a few events that are not well understood that stemmed from his gambling problem. No one will actually know what happened, and for this, it doesn’t matter. What matters is what happened next. Shortly after his marriage collapsed, he started threatening to kill himself. We managed to stop him, and when he threatened again, his friends called the cops, who threw him in the psych ward. We spent as much time as we could trying to keep him sane and safe, but people only have so much that they can give. As time went on, people in his support group just wore out. It takes a lot of effort to try and keep someone going. And we all saw firsthand what can happen even with all that effort.

As much as we had been trying to keep my brother alive, he had been trying to keep one of his best friends alive. We’d known the family since we were kids, and he’d been dealing with chronic pain as a result of a workplace accident. And in November, he went into the woods to try and kill himself. My brother knew exactly what was going on and exactly where he was going to go, called the ambulance and had them meet there to save him. He spent a few weeks recovering in the hospital before being released for Christmas. As soon as he was out, he tried to kill himself again, with one difference: He didn’t warn anyone this time. So there was no one to stop him. My brother took this surprisingly well, but we didn’t realize that he had learned his lessons.

My brother knew he was having mental health issues. Throughout his issues with gambling, he had committed several crimes, which caught up with him. He had robbed some houses and snatched some purses, and when he was on trial he asked to be given probation instead of just getting a discharge. He asked for this because if he was on probation, he could get access to mental health services. Something that he desperately needed.

It seemed that he was trying to keep his life together. He even took an odd job contract for some extra money, and was given a bonus of an old comic collection. I remember going through the collection with him, seeing all the Jim Lee X-Men and some early Image and Avengers and such. It was cool enough that you didn’t care that the bags smelled of rats. I had drifted away from comics as a result of a car accident taking a lot of my disposable income, but he had never gotten away from it. We both thought the collection was so cool. We had collected together for years, with Spider-Man and Thor being his thing. This was just like old times, where we would get home from the store or a con and show off what we had picked up.

But on January 25th, 2015, we learned that he had just gotten better at hiding his problems. I left for work in the morning and heard him watching Friends on his tablet. I came home and found him hanging from the balcony. I didn’t realize what was happening right away, not being able to see the whole scene. I still remember thinking that he was changing a light bulb. But the adrenaline kicked in as I did everything that I could to try and save him. Finding something to cut the rope, finding a working
phone to call 911, trying to perform CPR. I asked the coroner later if there was anything I could have done, but he had been dead for hours by the time I got home.

He died waiting for his probation officer to get him access to mental health care. And in return, I was saddled with more mental health issues. I was put into trauma counselling almost immediately and it quickly became apparent that I had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from everything that had happened. It’s something that you often find in returning soldiers or victims of crime and it basically means that the stress and trauma has changed the way your brain works. You see the traumatic event in places that really only make sense to you, and relive the event. A song comes on the radio and you need to just stop, because it reminded you of the event. I can tell you exactly what I saw, exactly when I first realized that something was wrong. I can tell you exactly how he fell when I cut him down and everything I tried to do to save him because I still relive it. It’s something that I need to deal with.

It’s also something that you have good days and bad days with. Some days it is almost impossible to get out of bed. Others, it’s like nothing happened, and days run the gamut in between. In November, I had a bit of a breakdown because of it. Several bad days in a row took their toll. One of the things that had gotten me through the whole ordeal had been my support group. My friends and family had kept the bad days from getting too bad, but in November, they disappeared. A few of my best friends had gone on a trip to the UK, several of my regular meet ups had been cancelled temporarily because of scheduling issues and another friend had to cancel our regular dinner because of a lack of time. Even my girlfriend was away. We are normally talking on Skype constantly, even if we can’t be in the same room, but she was on a trip to Toronto. I had been removed from staff on another site, so I didn’t have them, and CPG was down. I think CPG being down was actually the biggest thing, since I used my alone time to get through a lot of the comic collections that I had been buying. As I was going through the random issues, I just kept thinking that my brother would have thought this was so cool.

I had to leave a job because of the breakdown. It just ended up happening at the wrong time. But it did reinforce a piece of
advice that I have been giving people with mental health issues for ages, whether it’s addiction, depression, anxiety… never try to handle it alone. Never think that there is no one around to help you, never think that asking for help makes you weak. Never act like it is something that you can tough out. Regardless of where you are in life, there will be someone that is willing and able to help you. A friend, a family member, a doctor… I remember that one of the people who I had the best talks about it was the checkout lady at the grocery store. I went to school with her daughter, but I don’t think I had talked to her for more than 3 minutes at a time in 10 years. She closed her register and we talked for almost an hour, sharing stories of our lost siblings, since she had lost her sister the same way. She even came to his funeral. A lot of my family shared similar stories. If they were out in public and mentioned it, it was not uncommon for a random stranger to come up to them and share their memories and how they coped. I originally wrote “how they got over it,” but I don’t think it’s something that you ever really get over. But random people just coming up and being willing to help.

You are never alone.

There’s a story that I share when I give this advice. It comes from the West Wing. A man is walking down the street when he falls down a hole. A priest walks by and the man calls out, “Father, I’m stuck down here, can you help me?” The priest says a prayer and walks away. Later, a doctor walks by the hole and the man calls out “Doc, I’m stuck down here, can you help me?” The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down the hole and walks away. As the man is losing hope, he sees his friend walking by the hole and call out, “Buddy, I’m stuck down here, can you help me out?” His friend jumps in the hole and the man says, “Are you crazy, now we’re both stuck down here!” His friend says “Yeah, but I’ve been here before, and I know the way out.”

You are never alone. If you are suffering from mental health issues, reach out to the people around you. Sometimes, all you need is a distraction or to feel normal for a few hours. If you know someone with mental health issues, reach out to them. Make sure they know that they don’t have to do it alone.
edited by CapnDoug on 1/27/2016
edited by CapnDoug on 1/27/2016
edited by CapnDoug on 1/27/2016

So, a few more scans of the recent buys and stuff from the old forums. The area I did over the last day or two includes a lot of series where I had nothing from it, now I have a ton of them. Like Legion of Super-Heroes. I had nothing from them a few months ago. Now I have over 100 issues. None that I really felt like showing off, though. Here's what I do feel is worth showing off:

You know, I still haven't seen the movie. I'm told I'm not missing anything, though. Anyway, I was pretty excited about the whole ABC line, but I found I really only got into League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I got this off the rack, so it was cover price.

One collection I bought recently came from a guy who loved George Perez. So it was filled with stuff like this. And his Wonder Woman stuff, some New Teen Titans, that sort of thing. Sadly, none of his 70's Avengers, though. That's what I was really looking for from a guy who loved Perez. Anyway, I got the collection for 67 cents an issue. Not bad for a book like this with the first modern Suicide Squad. Then again, whenever something is going up in value because of a movie, I don't exactly see it as a sustainable thing. I can't get rid of my Watchmen issues right now.

Jack Kirby stuff. Really can't complain when you find that in a collection.

So, in three different collections I bought, there was a large number of New Teen Titans. I don't think I had more than half a dozen issues of New Teen Titans from any series before I started doing the collection buys. Now, I have all but one of the original series before it went to reprints in Tales of the Teen Titans. In a lot of cases, I had a nice choice of which one I wanted to keep. As a result, here are the stats about my newly acquired New Teen Titans collection:

Missing one issue

One issue is in a condition below Very Fine

Three issues are below Near Mint-

Oh, and that issue I'm missing is #39, not #2, first appearance of Deathstroke. I only found one copy of this issue, sadly, but it is currently the most expensive DC book that I own. I have stuff with a higher near mint value, but most of those are a little rough. Not like this one that I put at Near Mint-. This one obviously came from the $1900 collection, as did the issue #1 above.

I'm running out of my current supply of bags and boards, so it might be a bit before I post more. Hopefully not too long, though.

So, I have gone through a few more boxes in my collection, getting everything sorted in. I figure I should probably post a bunch of them (mixed in with some stuff I have scanned from the old forums). Let's start with some Batman.

I showed off the death of Jason Todd in the last post. He stayed dead for over 200 issues, returning here. I started collecting Batman during the Bruce Wayne Murderer storyline, so all of these were bought new for cover price less my discount (I think I was usually getting 20%-30% off).

I collected Batman up until I was forced to stop at around #695 or so. So I got these for cover price, too.

This one's a little rough, but given that it's Neal Adams redesigning Green Arrow, getting it for 50 cents in any condition is a steal. This came as part of a collection I bought a few months back.

Ah, Brian K. Vaughn... I'm three issues short of finishing the series. I picked up almost every issue when it was first released since the guy who runs my LCS knew I was interested in politics and such. So, I paid cover price on this one, too.

I never really had much of a Green Lantern collection before I started doing the collection buys. I picked up the Geoff Johns stuff, but that was about it. Never something I really sought out. This isn't the most impressive, but it is the first Killawog, so that's something. This one ran me 86 cents and was in a collection that I remember for having some good stuff, but some look like they were rescued from a flood.

I saw this one for 50 cents at a con. Given that it's an iconic cover and has some of the more shocking moments in a Code approved book I figured it was worth 50 cents.

This was in that water damage collection I mentioned earlier. I don't think I really appreciated Dick Dillin until I saw this. As I was flipping through it, I was shocked that the quality of the art was as high as it was for the 60's. Again, 86 cents. Not that it's worth a ton more in this condition, but still a nice find.

My scanner seems to have issues... Anyway, this is nothing special, but it is my favourite Esleworlds story. So, I feel like I should throw this in here. Bought it right off the rack.

Which is a tad awkward since the dealer who runs the major local con was supposed to have the ability to price match on that collection. He didn't get it. So, what I have to do next is get everything graded (because there's no way that I'm getting a 10 cent Lois Lane for $6 in 9.4), figure out the total graded value of everything that I bought, divide the total price paid (including shipping) by that figure and start applying that percentage to every issue. It's a lot of work, but the figures must be accurate! Only time I don't bother is when I get things for under a buck an issue. Then, it really doesn't matter. Anyway, back to what was in there:

I have a pretty good collection of Daredevil now, and this collection just helped shore that up. Even got a reader copy of #10. It's pretty rough, though. Like, someone tried to trace Daredevil since there are all these weird impressions all over the outline of Daredevil. Moving on....

There are about half a dozen JLA issues in there. A bunch of which will help me with the Dick Dillin run. This one? Not so much, but it's cool, at least.

So, these were the reason that I bought the collection. A bunch of X-Men that I didn't have. Sadly, both have serious flaws that I either didn't see or were well hidden in the photos. I've been pretty good at spotting the "too good to be true" flaws that eBayers try to hide, but with this, if nothing else, it was a large set that I was buying.

Just kind of cool. Getting so many Teen Titans stuff lately. And so many duplicates. Not of this one, though.

That's all for now. As I go through the issues, I'll probably post one or two more if they end up being cool.

So, around Christmas, I bought a collection off of eBay. I haven't been really disappointed with the eBay stuff, I just keep thinking that I can get better deals by buying local. Anyway, I paid just under $400 Canadian, including shipping for this. I just got it, so I don't exactly know if there's some hidden gem that I don't know about yet, but here are some highlights:

Yeah, I didn't even take them out of the bags yet. Not in great condition, but then, most of these issues are not in high grade. Not a huge issue for me. I got a little closer to a full run of Amazing Adventures. It started as me wanting a full run of Killraven, but it's quickly expanded once I discovered that there are some great stories and art in the earlier issues. Like the Inhumans and Black Widow double feature. Speaking of....

I got a few Amazing Spider-Man issues that I didn't have for the run I'm building. This is by far the best of the bunch. I even got a few Spectacular Spider-Man issues that I am missing.

All the Avengers in the collection? I have them all. On the plus side, I might be able to upgrade the condition of an issue or two.

I think this is a multi-poster...

So, just before the forums went down, I implored Canadians to vote and also hinted that I had set a new record for the most money I had ever paid for a comic. It's one of the comics that I had scanned before it became apparent that the forums were going to be gone for a while. Anyway, here it is:

I've been finding a lot of Dick Dillin comics in my recent collection buys, and have started to really appreciate how dynamic his style is. I have a few of his Hawkman comics, but I've also been slowly cobbling together a nice run of his Justice League. I actually bought this at a garage sale. The guy had a bunch of comics that he had framed, this was one of them. Anyway, I bought this and a few others for about $85, so when all is said and done, I paid $61 for this comic (yes, that is a record for me. I don't often pay a lot for the comics I buy). A bit more than it's worth, but I'm ok with that. I didn't massively over pay, and it's the first Red Tornado (well, Silver Age, anyway) and the start of the 120 issue or so run that Dillin had on JLA. And given how often I get stuff well below guide (you better believe that I'll be scanning in the Sandman #1 that I got for 54 cents), I'm fine overpaying a bit for something I want from time to time.

Besides, that one only ran me 38 cents. I just had to buy a full long box for $100 to get it

I'll post more as I find them and scan them, though my LCS might take a bit to get me the number of bags and boards I need so that I can get everything sorted.

Because people are moving around a lot, or downsizing to smaller places to save money (or make money), the comic book collection that's been sitting for a while is usually expendable. And lots of people just want their old collection to go to a good home, so they sell it cheap to a fellow collector. That's how I get a bunch of collections, by being a collector who will properly care for the comics that they used to treasure. If they have something old and valuable, they usually know it, but I still managed to get the first Apocalypse for 87 cents buy buying in bulk. Pretty good condition, too.
