Very Human Comics wrote:

I feel like that blog post supports my argument that using volume numbers should be replaced by years. Simply because that change would minimize the confusion with 'volume 4' and Dreamwave.

CPG lists them with years too, so not sure what the problem is? The search results show years, Vol # and publisher. One thing that bugs me is when a title search that has many volumes doesn't come up in order of year published, oldest to newest, so you have to waste time scrolling to look for the right year.
edited by collectibleshop on 10/18/2025

I'll weigh in with some info off the net. The indicia for the 2001 Vol 4 series does indeed say "TMNT: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume Four", so if CPG wants to follow their own rules, it should be renamed that in the database. https://comicspriceguide.com/titles/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles/yitt
Here's a blog post about naming the volume numbers, seems to make sense to me: https://tmnt-ninjaturtles.com/labeling-the-different-volumes-of-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-comics/?srsltid=AfmBOoq72k_jQ9IW5actcnBV9en5CFnvUMY0eOy98kXXjq6F9AMYcnw2
Everyone's mileage may be different. As the Linda Richman character from SNL used to say, "Discuss."

In the case of TMNT that would be volume 2 as it's volume 2 of IDW. However, if you're considering overall it should be volume 6. Mirage being volumes 1 and 2, Image being volume 3, Mirage volume 4, and IDW volumes 5 and 6. There is no volume 7 as of yet.

Personally I find the using volumes as an outdated way of differentiating series. Mostly because there are so many titles with so many volumes. For example, Amazing Spider-Man. If we were going by volumes ASM would be on, what, volume 192? I think a more cohesive way of labeling titles would be with year the series started. As in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1984), (1993), (1996), (2001), (2011), and (2024).

Another point of contention with TMNT: I don't know what the official title of volume 4 is. Most of the covers show TMNT Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If that is what the indicia says, I would say it should be volume 1 of a series (Unless there was a prior TMNT Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that I'm unaware of). That would put the current series as volume 5.

I've always found the volume numbers here to be a bit odd too. There's certain titles that I just do my own numbering on, tbh. I'm sure it has something to do with both the title and publisher. TMNT seems to be a bit all over the place though.
In your specific example, it really doesn't make sense, especially because TMNT from IDW 2011-2024 is listed as Vol 6. So yeah, 2024-current really should be Vol 7.

But I guess we'll see what an admin says.

When bringing up comic singles, this website is showing one volume, and other references online are saying another volume.

For example,

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Issue 10 (July 2025) 8-27714-03315-1-01011

Your database says it is Volume 02

other databases say it is Volume 07.

For each comic, how do you determine the correct volume?
