Message from Loganhunter22

Hey folks,

I’d like to flag Marvel Comic #335 (UK) from 1979 for an update. While it’s currently listed as part of the standard Marvel UK series, this issue actually includes something unique and historically significant: Wolverine’s first true solo story, titled “At the Sign of the Lion.”

It’s original content written by Mary Jo Duffy, with pencils by Ken Landgraf and inks by George Pérez (his first inking credit at Marvel!). In the story, Wolverine visits a bar and ends up in a one-on-one brawl with Hercules (who tries to bully him). While it’s a simple setup, it’s notable for being the first time we see the now-familiar Wolverine barroom setting, a trope that would go on to appear frequently in his later solo adventures, including comics, movies, animated series, and video games.

The issue is also unusual because it was created specifically for the UK market, which almost exclusively featured reprints at the time. This original Wolverine story was published three years before his 1982 limited series, making it the earliest example of Wolverine headlining his own story. It’s told from Wolverine’s perspective and gives readers a rare early look at his personality, internal voice, and moral code outside of the X-Men team dynamic.

This key has only recently come to light in the last year and is now recognized by several trusted sources as Wolverine’s first solo story, including Marvel, which refers to the reprint as "Wolverine's first solo story" in their listing for the Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 2:

https://www.marvel.com/comics/collection/89913/the_uncanny_x-men_omnibus_vol_2_trade_paperback

The story was later reprinted in Marvel Treasury Edition #26, but its first appearance was in Marvel Comic #335 UK.

Given all of this, it might be worth considering a key designation or at least a note in the listing to reflect its significance.

Cheers!
edited by LoganHunter22 on 8/3/2025
edited by LoganHunter22 on 8/3/2025
edited by ronbatman on 8/4/2025
edited by LoganHunter22 on 8/4/2025
