I actually just found out that Overstreet has a grading guide with picture examples of each grade. I've read many descriptions of nm to vf but most are subjective.

This is a question I have had for a long time. If someone buys a book from a LCS, they expect the book to look good, no major defects, etc. So, when buying a book off the shelf, taking it home, reading it once with minimal stress on the spine (no folding over, etc.) cover still intact, glossy and whatnot, what would one expect the grade to be for the book straight off the shelf?

9.5 - 8.5 maybe?
edited by ComicFan70 on 2/26/2016
edited by ComicFan70 on 2/26/2016

You can try this as well:

http://www.e-bigs.net/freetool.php

As long as you don't have an atypical defect, it gets things pretty close to an acceptable grade.

Aaron

I know the obvious mint, nm+ but the more subjective grades like 9.0-9.6 is what I'm interested in. Some of my books have multiple slight spine stress with no color break while others have one glaring crease with minor color break. In both instances the cover is otherwise flawless. Any help is really appreciated.

Here's a good grading tutorial series on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLza7d39m0FViqSPlk69F7SjSBNEdm9lqA

Well worth the time.

A few references.
