Good some goals/hopes are happening for some! I was going to do what Ron suggested to me framing art first than other goals...New tires on car, a pacemaker put in, money gone for now! Darn it.
Have started going thru some boxes and replacing the poly bags to 2mil Mylar and fullbacks. Doing so has been interesting for a few reasons. 1, Seeing books I didn’t remember buying, some were really good buys that now have doubled or more in value, not many but enough to make me think sometimes I actually know what I’m doing!😜 2, reading some books that I enjoyed the first time and rereading a full series for a day or two till done. One was the MAX Punisher series by Ennis, what a fun ride from issue one to 75. 3, finding junk book series I started using Previews catalog and ordering the first three issues before even reading first issue hoping the series will be good. Lots of Marvel book junk. So separated those into a junk box to be given away or thrown out thus giving me new room in boxes for new buys. Space is critical since I’ve run out of space to keep buying.
So rent is paid, health bills monthly but saving for framing of original art, a goal I look forward to completing.

SIDENOTE: Ron, enjoying your blog, fun writing and good topics. The latest staple problem is interesting, and yep, got a few staple popping out of my older DC books.

Once I start and get going, I actually enjoy re bagging of books. Part of enjoying it is seeing books I forgot I own and just seeing them again makes me happy. Of course some boxes I open up and get halfway thru, I end up asking myself, “ what was I thinking when I bought all of these”? Luckily, remorse is happening less and less since I’ve been trying to have less impulse buys....damn those impulse buys.....
Also wish Mylar was much cheaper to buy, nothing like dropping $140 for only 300 Mylar and fullbacks...got to do those buys every so often to lighten the cost instead of all at once. Have a few thousand to put in Mylar....

Most single issues generally only find a home with me for a short bit. Right now I only really hold onto hardcover collected editions because they fit nicely into what little display space that I have.
As for my favorite artist, when it comes to the older magazines, is a fairly close, three-way tie between Frazetta, Wrightson, and Sanjulian with Bernie Wrightson probably leading between those three.
My favorite story is "Jenifer", written by Bruce Jones and illustrated by Wrightson in the pages of Warren's Creepy magazine. Although my love for this story was probably ingrained in my head from seeing the live action story portrayed in Showtime's Masters of Horror series quite a few years ago.

Ploog is great, and his work on Ghost Rider was a favorite of mine when I was younger. A lot of work in the early Warren horror magazines as well.

Eerie's a great title.
Hey everybody.

For most of 2017, I have been really focused on Horror, SciFi, and Fantasy Magazines from the late 60's through the early 1980's. I've been cycling through these fairly quickly, reading and enjoying for a small while then moving on to the next title. Nothing really worth keeping (sorry Ox, no Savage Tales #1) but a few nice issues I'll hang onto for a while including nice raw copies of Deadly Hands Of Kung Fu #22 and Marvel Super Action #1.

I've been laid back when it comes to buying and have been letting the books come to me (so to speak) and not actively searching for anything specific. I'll probably continue this throughout 2018 and focus on just becoming a little bit more organized.

Hope everyone is doing well.

I love this thread.

A lot of my goals are very similar to what many of you have posted already:

1. Save space by converting floppies to TPB's. (There are exceptions to this. I still want to get a full run batman vol.1 and UXM as well as a few others.)

2. Convert long boxes to short ones.

3. Read more of my comics! (Another reason I've decided to go the TPB route. I keep putting off reading titles that I don't have all the issues of. I started by filling in missing issues of 2,3&4 part mini-series as well as 12 parters like Will To Power and Superman: Metropolis
I also just finished Soldier x.) On another side note to this I did finally finish putting together all 112 issues of Ghosts.

4. I'd like to get to a few more conventions this year last year I only got to 2, Steel City Con and 3 Rivers Comic Con.

5. Get back to my creative roots. As a child I wrote stories, drew pictures and from age 14-29 I played a lot of music. So I want to get back into being creative. Even if it's just a few sketches or a short story or two or record a song.

6. This one is kinda silly but I want to get my brother into comics more this year. I've always been picked on by my brother for not "outgrowing" my obsession with comic books but last Christmas I got his attention by buying him the Metal Gear Solid comics by IDW. He's always been a big video gamer so he was surprised to know they did such a thing. ( No need to point out the irony here I have to "outgrow" comics but he can binge on Mario and Zelda for 14 hours and I'm supposed to be cool with that right? Not that there's anything wrong with that, he lives alone so other than work that's his hobby.) But to sum this one up I've got him looking for other things too. He's now trying to hunt down the Valiant Mario stuff, lol.

As far as non comic related things my son and I are going to buy a "cheap" classic on craigslist and we'll build his first car together. Nothing crazy just something to build memories on that will hopefully last long enough for him to get around to his first job and maybe to college. He's a lot like me doing as much as he can on his own so he'd rather build/create something than just buy something that he didn't make.

Also this year I want to knock out a lot of old debts the wife's student loans and some medical bills.
(The two months out of the year I didn't have medical coverage I managed to cut my eyebrow open and needed
stitches. Hello $5,000, can you believe a CT scan is $2,900? SHEESH!)

Can't believe there's activity here. Better take advantage of it!

My Goals for 2018:
1. I've got to trim down my new titles and start reading them during the week I buy them. I'm so far behind on so many titles, and also have so many thousands of back issues to read,
that I don't even know where to start. My hobby, that is supposed to be something relaxing, has turned into a source of stress.
2. Although this runs counter to my first goal, I want to continue filling my runs of Batman, Detective, Action, and Superman. Most of the ones I need are Silver and Golden Age.
3. Finish Daredevil run except for #1. Need about 4 others.
4. Finish Thor run except for JIM #83. Need about 15 others.
5. Finish FF run except #1. Need about 6 others.
6. Buy Amazing Fantasy 15 before it gets too far out of reach. Been planning for last couple of years, but this year I just need to do it.

I think that's enough. We are putting our house up for sale next week and I dread moving. I keep telling my wife. I want to move just once. No double move into an apartment and then into a house. Keep putting your comics in the small boxes instead of long boxes. I've been working on that goal for a while.

Comic chaff. Yeah, we all need to do that. There are books that look so interesting under the lights at the comic shop and then I get home and think why did I buy this?
Ron

Need a 4K tv, 4K player for it to work right. Having a 4K player will though play Blu-ray and dvd disks though. The player will as I understand it, will make a Blu-ray disk look better than just a Blu-ray player. Well there is plenty of articles out there explaining this, Google is your friend.
I will say there are movies out there that are made on 4K disks. But you know, not ever movie on 4K is worthy to buy. Be selective if buying them. If you want 4K movies but don’t have a 4K player yet, most movies come with a Blu-ray version with it, just like a Blu-ray movie comes with a dvd disk. Right now, there isn’t a very large selection of 4K movies yet, but that will be changing soon enough.
4K tv and 4K player is worth saving for. I just watched Valerian and the City of Thousands Planets, that was really fun on 4K😎

If I can complete #1 and #6, it would be a great year for me.

You are right though now that LD is now back being published by Brian Pulido and on Coffin Comics they do have super limited ultra low print run books, as low as 13 copies, and I have had to accept (as hard as it is as a completionist) that I will never be able to have a full Coffin Comics run...
I enjoy seeing your goals. 5th goal is key to happiness in my household! Your goal of #3 is cool. My first thought is BATMAN 156, I love that cover! I’d bet a marvel Tomb of Dracula would have one but I’d doubt it would be a hero he is carrying.
Your goal of using short boxes is smart. I moved too many times to know short boxes are so much easier to move and those helping will appreciate lighter boxes.
Thanks for the advice of framing. I did plan to get UV glass. I got a Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy art by Timm I’ve had for ten years and a giclee print by Alex Ross called Joker’s Reckoning, also had for years that both need to be on my walls. Other art can wait but the two mentioned are first to frame. And you are completely right, push that goal to number one, just can’t to stop buying comics for awhile....gonna be hard!...congrats on the tech #400, I still need one.
Can I comment on your goals before sharing mine?

About your 4th goal - A few years ago, I had 4 pieces of original art framed when Michael's had a 1/2 off framing sale. I put them under UV glass to protect them. That was one of the best things I've ever done with my collection. Comic book people are visual people so getting to see my favorite pieces made me happy. Plus it easier for non-comic book lovers to appreciate my passion for the hobby. The typical response is something like, "That's amazing". I would move that goal up the list.

My goals
1. Continue moving my comics from long boxes to short boxes. Easier to handle and organize.
2. Continue working on my Neal Adams collection. I have all Neal Adams' drawn Batman, need 11 Detectives, 4 Justice Leagues. The Adams' House of Mystery and House of Secrets books are so hard to find in VF and above. Since Neal did mostly DC, the Avengers and X-men books are usually very expensive. Patience Ron patience.
3. This is a bit weird. A few months ago I became obsessed with finding a certain cover. The cover is super common but I didn't realize it until recently. It shows one hero carrying another hero. (Crisis on Infinite Earths 7, Avengers 49, etc) I call it the carrying cover and so far I have bought 31 examples of it. So if you see one let me know. Since I'm the writer for the CPG blog you'll hear about it eventually.
4. Buy some key books that I really like. On the list, Captain America 110, Conan the Barbarian 1, Amazing Spider-man 50, Invincible 1, House of Secrets 92, bought Detective 400 last week! Yay!
5. Don't let my wife know how much I spend on comics. #lifegoals

Every year someone gets this up and running, what are your goals this year in collecting? Here’s mine.

1st goal is to replace all of my comic boxes with better new boxes. Some of the 60 boxes are beat up, some I have writing on them that have been crossed out numerous times, looking bad.

2nd goal is to replace comics bags and boards with Mylar and fullbacks like I’ve done the past 8 years, so I got the years before using Mylar to go thru. Most likely use halfsbacks to save space, fullbacks you can’t get as many in a box.

3rd goal is to reorganize my comics in boxes by putting them in alphabetical order. My organizing has been poor at times, just putting new buys in one box and not putting in the right boxes. This goal will be done by doing goal one and two. Obliviously this won’t be easy but it really needs to be done.

4th goal is to at least get a few of my original art I’ve bought framed. It sucks that they are stashed away in a closet and hardly look at them.

5th goal is upgrade a few books I have but not in grades I would like. One is Phantom #1, I got two copies but really would like a high grade of it, which I’m finding out is harder than I want it to be. But it is fun to try. Others to upgrade is Batman 155, Batman 232, and Batman 234, which a a lot easy to upgrade.

6th goal is to try to be more selective in what I buy. Really need to reduce the amount bought, more thinking quality of books bought than amount.

7th goal...pay the rent before buying comics each month!!!

What are your goals this year? Would enjoy hearing from you!
edited by Jokerbangedquinn on 1/28/2018
edited by Jokerbangedquinn on 1/28/2018
