Superb purchases! I think eBay is the absolute greatest place to find bargain prices for comicbooks and I am sure you agree. I am very careful, though, when I buy my "raw" comic books (those books not professionally graded by CGC) because grading varies from collector to collector and if there is no return privelege you have no recourse if the book was over-graded. What do you think?

As I explained on another post; to me, CGC books are worthless because I am more of a collector/comic fan, than an investor. I read and re-read every comic i keep. I don't want a "laminated" book I can't read! I see no sense in it. Just my opinion.

Well, everybody collects comic books for different reasons. I like high grade books. I know that they are meant to be read, but I just like the cover art. That may sound strange to you, but that is just the way I feel.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=723081901&rd=1 ******************************************************************* 4 Comics SIGNED/#'d BATMAN SUPERMAN SUPERGIRL
BATMAN - 2 consecutive issues from 1993, #666 and #667. Both signed by ~3~ different people... Scott Hanna (inker), Chuck Dixon (writer), and Graham Nolan (penciller). Each comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity from "Catch A Star Collectibles" and each is one of a very limited number of 5000. Some very minor ink marks on back, where the books were stacked at time of signing before ink was totally dry. Again - *very* minor.
SUPERMAN - 1 issue, from Feb/'94... "Superman: The Man Of Steel, No. 30." Signed by writer, Louise Simonson and issued by Dynamic Forces. Includes Certificate Of Authenticity from them, and has number that matches the signature number... and one of only 7500.
SUPERGIRL - 1 issue, also from Feb/'94... #1 of 4- Issue Mini Series, apparently called "Reign Of Tomorrow". Signed by artist June Brigman and also issued by Dynamic Forces. Like the Superman Issue, this one also includes Certificate Of Authenticity from them, and has number that matches the signature number... this one only one of 5000. ****************************************************************** All 4 for $14.95

Just for clarification - I only buy CGC books if they sell for below what ANY guide has for a NM price... I got a CGC 9.2 graded copy of Uncanny X-Men for $27 and the guide has it at $40.... and I DO love to read my books, but when I can get the re-print in Classic X-Men for less than $1 a piece, why open that holder? I mean... well, this might be morbid, but I AM gonna die someday... and I want my books to be as good as they can get, even after that! ($27 + $1 = $28, STILL less than the shop I work for has a VF+ copy of the same book for!)

Hey, for all my neutrality-to-praise for CGC graded books, I called CGC about the rip in my Uncanny #104. They claimed to know nothing of the rip in the front cover, but they did say that there WAS a half-inch tear on the back cover, from the bottom up. This on a comic graded 8.0/VF! WHO THE HELL IN HERE WOULD EVER GRADE A BOOK WITH A RIP IN EITHER COVER AT AN 8.0/VF???? I would never sell one like that on eBay, or trade one away to any of you here on Spideyfan's site, in that condition, at that grade! Also, my Uncanny #127 CGC graded at 9.2/NM- has a corner that has been "smushed" - nothing serious, but from the grading guides I have read, that ONE defect would put it at a VF+, no better. I don't trust these guys anymore, and I was considering sending in my Giant-Sized X-Men #1 to be "slabbed." Forget it, who knows what they might grade it at? I'm not planning on selling it anyway, I'll just leave it in it's Mylar.

Slym-my guess is they are overwhelmed with books being sent to them and they are not taking the time they should with each book. Look no further than Ebay and the CGC books that go for rediculous amounts of money to see what the problem is here. I mean come on- CGC USM for $700? The prices are going to drop like a rock in the slab market, it's just a matter of time. Maybe they will hire some more folks in the meantime to try to avoid errors like you are talking about.

Err... don't get me started on the Ultimate Line-up again! Even non-slabbed books are going at ridiculous prices. Like you say, a few years at the most, and things will start dropping.

Green Lantern number 40 and 87. These are nice copies - Drawn by two legends; Gil Kane and Neal Adams. I would classify number 40 as a nice reading copy ('good'?) the centerfold page has come apart from the staples, (the page is still inside the comic) but the comic as a whole is still intact just fine. There is lots of wear and tear for this gem, but still a great comic to own. Issue 87 was sold to me as Very Fine, and I would tend to agree. Beautiful cover gloss, light page tanning and a slight printing wrinkle on the front cover probably keep this from Very Fine plus/near mint minus condition. **********************************************************************

Not much in the way of comics compared to the huge amount of comics you guys have been getting for peanuts, but I am trying to chase down the Mortal Kombat series so I can have a complete series of 34 (32 Malibu, 2 Midway) comics. These three now mean I am only missing the Hologram cover of Blood & Thunder #1, so if someone has one they want to offload, or see one for auction, can you drop me a line on bmtaylor@blueyonder.co.uk please?
I think most of the other bidders were after the Midway comics, hence why it got so high. I was mainly after the Goro comic. The Midway ones are an added bonus for me.
BTW, any chance of the Midway comics being added to the site, just so I can update my collection? >8^D

shonti, I really don't know why you didn't get more for those Batmans... I sold my last set of 608s for $22! And I know your ad was good... *LOL*

Ian, I'll up-date this, since I never answered you... In the past 30 days (as of this moment now) I have won 35 auctions, with 717 comics, all for $170.99 (S/H not included).

That gives an average price of less than $.24 (that 24 cents) per comic. Of course, again not including S/H fees. And I have 13 more auctions that I have a bid on, 174 comics, and right now the bids total $14.26. That averages out to less than 9 cents per comic, if no-one out-bids me.

Are you bidding on lot sets or just random comic lots? A year ago I was buying like crazy on ebay filling holes, I have done most of the newer hole filling and am not focusing on bronze and early 80's hole filling, but I am finding the "deals" I was getting before are just not there.

Nevermind. I went and looked at your won and bid on auctions and I see you have a shotgun method to comic buying :)

Ok, without giving details... Cuz people don't need to be knowing my eBay buying/selling habits, let me let you in on something that happened/is-happening to me...
Searched eBay, found a CGC'd comic going for a GREAT price. Several aspects of the auction screamed ALARM to me. Among other things, 1) the guy only accepted money orders, 2) he had a rating of 0 (but had 67 things on the block all due to end at the same time), 3) he was selling LOTS of CHOICE comics (some CGC'd, some not), 4) all the comics being sold had the same Initial Bid as Buy-It-Now price (IOW he wanted money quick), 5) he had each one set-up as a Private Auction (so I couldn't and still can't contact other bidders/buyers).
Was this enough to turn me away? Did I mention it was a GREAT price? I e-mailed the guy. He claimed that he and his brother were selling his father's collection. Fair enough, could be true. I asked if he'd take a personal check and told him he could sit on it as long as he needed to, to make sure it cleared. He responded that a personal check was too RISKY for him. Ooooookay. Kinda odd. I also asked if I could wait a week to pay him (until my next pay day) and he said that would be fine. This last point probably saved me a couple hundred bucks.
Days went by. His auctions were drawing to a close. I read up a bit on eBay fraud and found they'd cover up to $200 so figured if I was willing to go through with this, and he took the money and ran; I'd be covered in time. So I did the Buy-It-Now and waited for pay day.
A day or so after the auction I noticed he was no longer a Registered User. I e-mailed him. He replied that he was faxing a Photo ID to eBay to reinstate his registration (and that it should happen any day). I e-mailed eBay but they couldn't tell me why he was not registered anymore (other than User Suspended). They advised me NOT to send him any money however (which makes me wonder how many others who bid had already sent the guy money orders). I got the impression from talking with eBay Support that I would get no fraud protection if I sent money to a no-longer registered user. eBay Support told me however that my bid was a contract, and that if at any point in the next 90 days they reinstated this Seller that I am at that point required to send him his money. Fine by me.
So, I'm sitting on the money and check-up on his status every other day or so. No one has left him any feedback yet (not sure if it would register register if they did since he's Not a Registered User AND it was a Private Auction). Purpose of this post? Follow your first instincts. And if it looks too good to be true, that might just be the case.
P.S. The seller's name was/is "comicguy1960".

Freaky story there Galaxor! Good thing ya didn't send the money to 'im.
My first ebay deal went off without a hitch... I am now the proud owner of the Ultimates #2 and Ultimate War #1 (It was cheap and from the same dealer!)
Soon, I'll be getting rid of a few comics (DD, F4, and Spidey!)... and my father will probably use it to buy/sell HAM Radio stuff. (So if ya'll are into that... he's selling some stuff! )

I would never send more than $10 to a 0 feedback that does not take Paypal. Unless they are located within a few hours of me and I get an actual address and not a PO box (have bat, will travel). I've never seen an auction with more alarms going off then that one... I bet it was some 15-year-old kid looking to make some quick scam money.
He had far too many #1 comics for my tastes too. I bet if you had emailed him for a pic he would have sent you one that he stole from someone else. I've caught people doing this before. Ebay has the worst rules though. To their rules, if you catch someone that is scaming, and you are 100% sure its a scam, you are not allowed to send an email to any bidders of the scam auctions. That is agaist their policies and will get your account suspended.
I also will not bid on "private" auctions. That is usually a front for shill bidding. There was an article online (like CNN's website or something) about this group of accounts that were involved in a shill bidding scheme. CNN had piles of facts to prove the fact. They submitted everything to Ebay and Ebay gave the account a warning. That same account is still selling items on Ebay, but now ALL their auctions are PRIVATE. So you can't see them shill bid up auction prices. Ebay has no economic reason to punish shill bidding, higher bids = more Ebay profits.
There are still some very good deals on Ebay, but the motto "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" works on Ebay. I was sitting on the fence on an auction for some choice looking Amazing Spider-Mans. The price was just too unbelievable, and it was ending at a good price. In the end I didn't bid. But I did watch that seller. A couple of weeks after the auction the seller had a large number of negatives coming in, specifically on non-delivery. The specific auction I was watching was never delievered.
Oh and also, if an account is suspended or un-registered you can not post any feed back on that account. Its totally unfair because if the account gets reinstated after the 90 day period you can't post feedback.

Kilroy13, very interesting points...
I knew the auction was risky before bidding... I did ask the guy for a scan of the comic beforehand... He sent one but it was a reduced image (of the comic in a CGC holder) but it was grainy and could have been lifted from anyone's auction.

Well 0 feedback is a little risky but one time I bought a CGC'd Tomb of Dracula 10 from a guy with 0 and he sent it out before he even got my Money order. But wanting MO's isn't bad because checks bounce.(Does a person receiving Paypal payment get charged a fee?) And I can see the buy it now price being the same as the opening if you really need cash. I want to try and get rid of some books(Daredevil 1 would fill my pockets but I hate to part with it) so I can buy Detective Comics 168. Also sometimes people don't like having others being able to see what they won. I still think it's weird you can find what other people are bidding on that way if they screwed you out of a previous auction you can go and bid against them on other stuff

You tend to be buying stuff all over the place (lots of different things even in the same auction). That was all I meant by shotgun method.
