Hey,

I was just sorting through some of my recent collections, and purchases, and came across a wide array of comics that made me question something. Which tends to hold its value? Newsstand editions (w/barcode) or Direct editions (w/o barcode).

I only ask, because I really only need ONE copy of Green Lantern 178, and want to know which one will retain it's value better, and obviously keep that one.

Sorry if this question is redundant. I searched the last 5 pages of the forums, but could not see anything recently posted on this.

In most cases there is no difference in price and which holds value. There are rare instances when newsstand copies (foreign or domestic) have a higher value than the direct whether that will "hold" is another question altogether.

I will say that the later newsstand books likely had much lower print runs than the directs. When they first started with the two newsstand the numbers were pretty even but as the market changed the numbers of newsstand books shrank. Despite the sarcity of some of the later newsstand books prices are still about the same.

So nothing to be overly concerned about, right?

I've been keeping the Direct's and selling the Newsstands. The Directs seemed to feature Sharper/Darker colours, and just seemed to generally be a better addition to my comic book family Smile

Colours will vary throughout the run. As I said some newsstands are rarer and some may have higher value but in most cases they are the same price so it is entirely up to you which copy to keep. They are all a part of the initial run of a comic so there shouldn't be a huge quality difference.

I have noticed this as well, although only with some titles.

Between the NS and Direct version of Futurama #1, for example, there is absolutely no variation in saturation or quality of the cover, but on certain other issues (notably DC titles), it seems like the NS versions are somehow cheaper.

Like Ox said, at this time nobody pays attention to that detail, and if people start giving thought to it in the future, I would expect the EARLIEST direct sales and the LATEST newsstand issues to be the ones that would develop some value-added for scarcity.

Perhaps the direct edition run was put through first, with the newsstand editions following. It would make sense that the color strike would become weaker near the end of the run.

This seems like it might be a legit reason. I always just assumed that both prints would be done at the same time.

newsstand copies should be recognized... even if you personally dont care about them. there are many instances where the prices are listed separately, such as Spider-Man 1, Star Wars 1, Amazing Spider-Man 400 and others. but lots of books selling on ebay get a premium as certain buyers desire them so much. so even if you dont care you can get a few extra dollars from that portion of the community. take a look at Hulk 271, people seem to pay more for them if that crappy barcode is there... it is no different than people who collect whitman or gold key comics still in the sealed 3-pack never ignore an opportunity to increase your sales.
